A short read, but worth consideration. For those not familiar, Robert Reich has written a lot of good stuff regarding the economy and Great Recession. He was secretary of labor from 93 - 97.

Just one caveat: the type does exist elsewhere, e.g. in regions where people are used to fend for themselves as there is nothing to fall back on if they don't. Granted, often in groups, whereas the author implies lone men. But even those relative loners - relative because their wives and children are just as engaged in keeping the boat afloat - do exist in remote rural areas. However, this is not considered heroic behaviour in those places, and no myths are made about it.
