My issue with this article is that it doesn't address the power that news satire has on political engagement. I don't think it is unreasonable to assume that comedy like The Daily Show has had a profound effect on young adults. In many respects, it has created a plethora of politically informed individuals.

The dilemma here is that if every 'fake news' story has to be carefully explained away as satire, then will the humor be diluted to 'weak tea'? Will it drive away the audience?

Within this article, the worst offence was an article that was misunderstood by 28% of Republican viewers. This would translate to about 10-15% of the total population who were misinformed due to poor comprehension of the material.

Is it worth the risk of sacrificing some of the comedy of satire in order to 'save' that 10-15%? Will this end up with a net negative of informed individuals if viewers are driven away because the jokes are now a bit more 'lame'?

Following the passage of Alabama’s new restrictive abortion bill, a 12-year-old victim of sexual abuse said during an interview that she doesn’t think she can be a mom on top of her already hectic life.

Tucker Carlson repeatedly criticized a former child bride, who was a guest on his show, for saying that sexual encounters with her adult husband constituted rape.

Jesus, you have to get used to some really depressing news stories in order to believe those are real.

I think that the country needs more education in media literacy. We need to do something to get rid of these reactionary news peddlers who write their stories specifically to get an emotional response out of the readers. It's clearly bad for individuals, and it affects people in a way that is especially bad for society.
