It's pretty neat how much of this is paralleled here in Hawaii with our own Native Hawaiian holidays, such as Kuhio day and Kamehameha day!

There are a number of similarities

      1. Hawaiians are Polynesian, and share some cultural similarities to the Maori
      2. Hawaiian land was effectively stolen from them
      3. Hawaiians generously share their culture with visitors

      The differences are that

      1. Hawaiians do not have a treaty of Waitangi which grants inviolable rights to all lands not sold
      2. Hawaiians suffer incredibly from a lack of social welfare that is available to all Kiwis
      3. Hawaiians have a staggering number of tourists visit their beautiful islands

New Zealand was the first country to give women the vote, and is the first country to make amends for the treatment of the indigenous people.

If Australia were to give a similar portion of its economy to the Aborigines, that would equal about $10b AUD. If America were to pay a similar amount to the Native Americans, that would come to about $100b USD.
