Something you can do personally on places like Facebook is look at your profile every so often, count how many posts are political, and think about if that's how you want people to see you. I try to keep the percentage of political posts very low, like <10%.
(I'm less restrained when it comes to commenting on posts, but I think it's a bad habit.)

I think, among my generation, Facebook is basically dead as a place for discourse. All the posts on my timeline from close people are either people making announcements about events in their lives or shilling some kind of MLM scheme like Herbalife or Beachbody.
The only earnest posts I see come from people I knew in high school who still live in my hometown. Their posts have a fair bit of political content to them, but I get the strong impression it’s all aimed pretty squarely at their parents or aunts and uncles.

It seems like the people who are 90-100% political on Facebook are older than me, though, and are mostly just resharing memes like crazy without any idea how it makes them look. I've had to unfollow some.
