Midweek Movie Free Talk
Have you watched any movies recently you want to discuss? Any films you want to recommend or are hyped about? Feel free to discuss anything here.
Please just try to provide fair warning of spoilers if you can.
The World Cup and a funeral have really slowed me down on movies lately. Does anyone want to talk about:
Toy Story 5 (2026): ★★☆
Thor Ragnarok (2018): ★★☆
Citizen Kane (1941): ★★★
More has been written about Citizen Kane than probably any other film. I think until 2012, it used to rank #1 in 'Sight and Sound' list of greatest films of all time [when it was overtaken by Hitchcock's Vertigo ].
I saw it once a long time ago and found it decent though that's it.But then I was going with great expectations [when you are seeing a film oft speaken as the greatest of all time, you are bound to be disappointed]. Even from 1941 English cinema, Maltese Falcon is another gem.
Yeah, Citizen Kane is better on the second watch. When you know where it ends up, it's easier to follow the nonlinear story and just go along for the ride. Maybe Vertigo is the same way; I've only seen it once and didn't think it lived up to its reputation.
I once trawled through whole of Hitchcock's filmography [including his lesser known films made in the 30s I think] though his most fertile period was in the fifties [when he made Grace Kelly the quintessential blonde in many of his films]. I found Vertigo one amongst many splendid films [others including Rear Window, North by Northwest (I think it had the iconic crop chase sequence) and Psycho ] though it didn't rose above it's peers.
Come to think of it, I remember more from the above films than I do of Vertigo [all seen roughly a decade ago].
