Movie Monday Free Talk

We had a couple spurts at trying to do a regular movie discussion thread in the past here, but it seems to have fizzled out and I would love to bring it back.

So Tilderinos, have you watched any movies recently you want to discuss? Any movies that you want to recommend or are hyped about? Feel free to discuss anything here.

Please just try to provide fair warning of spoilers as you can.

I saw Captain Marvel and thought it was pretty good, despite hearing nothing positive about it from friends or reviewers. I asked a coworker for his take on it, and he gave me the typical "they got this, this, and this wrong," but kept his negativity aimed at the accuracy to the comics (dude's a huge comic geek), rather than the movie itself.

I was surprised at how much crap it got, for being really just on the lower end of the Marvel franchise in quality. It's still good, but there are quite a few MCU movies that are better.

It was a terrible performance by Brie Larson where, outside the odd quip, she was monotone and emotionless. The movie relied way too much on the 90's factor, where the references were relentless and inorganic. The female empowerment factor had two very good, outside of the box moments in the "I don't need to prove anything to you" and "Smile for me" moments and then was otherwise preachy and paint by the numbers. Then there were pointless "Hey! Do you get it!?" references like Fury losing his eye in a completely inconsequential scene that is barely even given time to breathe as a joke.

An Skrull spaceship blows up in orbit around earth and nobody notices? A woman falls from space into L.A. and nobody but SHIELD notices? A bunch of green lizard men crawl out of the surf in Malibu and nobody notices? A woman with fire beam hands and a power ranger suit gets into a fight on the metro and those passengers walk off the train like it's any other day? Three gigantic alien dreadnoughts jump into orbit around earth and nobody really knows about aliens until the attack on New York decades later? Hundreds of ballistic missiles blow up in the atmosphere over the U.S.A. and it basically has no effect on the population/governments of earth?

And then there's the Marvel power issue. Where does the character go from here within her own series? She is already the most powerful character in the universe at the end of movie 1. There's no potential challenge for her. She's all of Thor's 6 movie growth, one movie in.

It was DC movie quality and the only reason its not lambasted is because the Marvel name is given way too much leeway. I thought I was being biased, but even my girlfriend and her brother, who are both huge Marvel fans have the movie a solid "Meh". Somewhere between Thor 2 and Iron Man 2 and those movies were bad.

Might try to see Shazam this weekend, but the local drive-in theater is opening for the season this weekend too. Won't have time for both, so I guess my choice will depend on the weather.
