tl;dw: Sonic doesn't look horrifying anymore. Movie still looks like hot garbage but at least it's not hot garbage that will haunt your nightmares.

Jim Carrey looks like he'll be fun in this.

incredible waste of man-hours and money

Which means nothing so long as it pays off. This is a chart of 2018 theatrical release movies and how much they made at the box office. I'm willing to wager that pretty much everything that made less than $1M wasn't profitable, which makes it an incredible waste of man-hours and money. The $1M mark is at spot 251 of 735, so nearly 2/3 of all of the movies were released theatrically. It gets even worse if you consider all releases as IMDB says that nearly 12,000 feature films were released last year.

Now there is the separate conversation of what constitutes a waste. Is it wasted money to the studio that had to pay for it? Sure. Was it wasted money to all of the people employed to complete it? Surely not. Those people now have money to live that they wouldn't have otherwise. Money that went from doing nothing while sitting in a studio's bank account to money that was spent to have someone perform a task which will then continue onward as those individuals pay other individuals to perform a job. Studio to actor, actor to plumber, plumber to waitress, waitress to grocer, grocer to farmer. No one from actor on down is going to say the movie was a waste.

I've noticed a trend recently that the discussions revolving around upcoming 'blockbuster' movies mostly focus on things that are not related to the movie itself.
Take this movie for example, what are some of the narratives about it?

    1. They actually listened to our critiques and made changes
    2. I love Jim Carry
    3. I love Sonic

Notice how none of these three statements have anything to do with the contents of the movie itself, as far as I'm concerned we could be talking about an upcoming Sonic cartoon, comicbook, video game, etc.

It's a bit of an exaggeration because there really is some discussion about the contents of the trailer, but from what I've seen it is not the main focus at all.

Also, while this is a much better trailer, unless they actually did re-shoots, then the bad material from the first trailer is still in the movie. I mean, this trailer had some mediocre jokes, but the last one was downright terrible—it just got buried under the horrifying CG Sonic.

That said, I do think Jim Carrey is worth mentioning. I unironically like his Robotnik, and him hamming it up and chewing the scenery will almost certainly be the best part of the movie.

I used to be a massive Sonic fan during my whole childhood and early teens. That initial “gangsta” trailer made absolutely sure that I won't go to a theatre to see the new Sonic film and instead wait for Nostalgia Critic1 to review it.

This trailer made me actually want to go to theatres and watch the film. Maybe even with friends. Which is amazing, considering how bad the first trailer was. Now I only have two concerns: why the hell did Sonic decide to hide on Earth and where the hell is our foxy boy Miles Prower?

1 I know, I know, #ChangeTheChannel, “vindictive former employees”, and all that, but what can I do? Douge is still very entertaining to me, and almost every review has a line, or a delivery of a line, that leaves me roaring. Those Stamps.Com ads though…

Edit: Would be nice if this topic had the tag 'adaptations'.

I kinda feel obligated to watch this but the last bit of my childhood died with the latest terminator movie.
