I recently re-watched this movie, and it got me thinking about why, when I've pretty much disliked everything else DC has put out the past few years, I enjoyed this one so much. The first time through I thought maybe it was the costumes, or the soundtrack, or just Margo Robbie being funny. But then this video came up...

What if the whole difference came down to how the camera, other characters, and the audience itself shifted from looking at Harley Quinn just as the Joker's crazy girlfriend to a woman with a rich inner life & real relationships?

Another person I was rewatching this movie with mentioned afterwards that the way the movie was shot seemed 'experimental' to them, which now that I think about it rings true. Focusing on how a female character moves through a sequence/scene/movie as participating in the action, not as the object the action takes place around, seems incredibly radical- if only because I'm not sure I can think of many other examples like it in film.
