There's something tragic about a bunch of insecure men controlling a group of beautiful, powerful young women in this documentary. I'm not a fan of kpop, but I watched some videos and YouTube suggested me this. It's brutal and quite uncomfortable to watch, even for a true crime fan like myself. The psychological abuse is real.

What about things in the states like beauty pageants and miss universe or cheerleaders for the nfl, or the Olympics as we saw recently? It seems like we’re all willing to allow these people to suffer as long as they can come out of it and “achieve” something. But if they crash and burn then it’s on them for being too soft I guess.

Yeah. If they succeed, that's because of management. If they fail, that's on the girls. Those in power -- generally men -- always evade responsibility. You see that in the doc. It's sick how much unnecessary suffering goes into something which requires young women to always show a cheerful and positive disposition. The juxtaposition is insane.

I wouldn't really focus on the gender dynamics personally. To my knowledge, plenty of Korean boybands go through the same thing. And if we turn our eyes to the entertainment industry in America, well, there's a lot to fix here too. Didn't Dave Chappelle write about how young Hollywood stars are encouraged to use addicting drugs, so they become easier to manage? I think it's time we try to get over the celebrity culture together, if we want to see less of these practices.

Yes, of course, everyone will suffer some kind of abuse. But I think young women probably face circumstances that are distinct enough to single out.
