Really interesting choices this year, favouring the less conventional stuff. Even though it's not ranked, it was great to see Aethiopes and I Told Bessie as the first two picks! As for the rest:...

    As for the rest:

    • Haven't listened to Fatboi sharif and really need to.
    • Fly Anakin was a bit 'meh' for me.
    • Was very surprised to see the Infinity Knives and Brian Ennals album. It wouldn't make my top 10 but is still worth a listen. Brian Ennals is a ferocious emcee and I'd definitely see them live if I could.
    • Mary sue - Wasn't for me but seems to be pretty hyped in some circles.
    • Open Mike Eagle - Probably inevitable given the reviewer's taste so far. I did like this album but it's not his best.
    • Psalm One and Custom Made - Haven't listened to this.
    • Quelle Chris - As I have mentioned before this album is pretty underrated/overlooked so good to see it on the list.
    • Wilma Vritra - Wasn't as exciting as their debut but more consistent. Love Wilmer Archer's production.

All in all, a very 'bandcamp' list that shares some of the albums in my top 10, but great to see more coverage for underground hip hop.

I was initially a bit surprised by this list (well, more accurately some omissions from the list), but then I remembered this is a bandcamp list. By that I mean that the focus will be on underground artists or artists who are currently flying under most people's radar and unconventional/unique art. This is not a bad thing or a statement against their list, I love and use bandcamp a lot. It is just important to remember what the grading scale being used is when looking at a "Best Of" list. Most of the artists I have heard on here are very deserving of their spot.

Sidenote: I always remember and appreciate how much effort and thought bandcamp puts into how they make their lists. I love that they did away with "Top <N> of <Genre>" lists. They're so subjective, and you're always going to miss out on some works that were equally deserving of being on the list but couldn't be put on because we're only allowed N items. Unordered lists that have as many items as the writer thinks earned "Best Of" is something I vastly prefer and would love to see adopted more generally.
