The Queen of Bossa Nove passed away. Her voice and the one song that inspired many many others will live forever. Thank you for the music!

Bossa Nova is an enduring influence on our music. You can see it in the style of people like Rodrigo Amarante, Fernanda Takai, Tim Bernardes, and Adriana Calcanhoto. Astrud Gilberto is known more in the US than in Brazil and I never saw her referred to as "queen of Bossa Nova". No one is. I would point to Nara Leão as someone who might be appropriate for that title. Astrud Gilberto was once married to João Gilberto, to which many attribute the creation of Bossa Nova. She was an exquisite singer that represented our culture with brilliance.

Although that is changing rapidly with influences from abroad, you'll find that the classic Brazilian singing style is often unadorned when compared to the US or even the rest of Latin America. As you say, it is an "unassuming, honest" style, and Bossa Nova is the culmination of that.

Carmen Miranda, for all her qualities, was more of an amalgamation of Brazilian, Latin American, and Portuguese influences in an exotic package for American audiences.
