Excerpt from NPR:

As a producer, Parker has more moving parts to balance this time, but he arrives at a deft auteur-pop synergy in which every last decision, down to the assorted cathedral-like reverb effects that lend his voice an otherworldly aura, become as intrinsic to the music as the melodies or the words. Though there's a lot going on in the latticework of the music — springy analog synthesizer arpeggios, guitars doing unguitarlike things, layers upon layers of pastel lushness — the post-psychedelic swirl of The Slow Rush registers as an organic blend, with the songs never feeling cluttered or too tightly scripted.

I mostly enjoyed it - I am familiar with the album Innerspeaker but not any others from Tame Impala's catalog, so I was prepared to come into this one with the backdrop of kind of spacy, electronic, tape loopy kind of music. I do generally like this style, because lyrics and the voice are often used as another instrument in the mix of psychedelic instrumentation, and it makes it easier for me to vibe with the mood.

I enjoyed a lot of the beats and a lot of the sounds coming out of this album and I'll likely listen to it again when I've got a chance to put on my nice headphones (and maybe not at work so I can enjoy listening uninterrupted). My only trouble so far is that I get from the song titles and reading the lyrics on Spotify that there is a time theme to this album. I'm fine with that, but the music itself sometimes feels a little bit disjointed and not a coherent album in tone - even while the lyrics lend more to that cohesiveness and theme.

But like I said above I appreciate this kind of music for its tone and vibe, and not for the words in the songs, so this album had some songs that felt out of order or out of place if we're just using the instruments as our metric instead of lyrics.

But there were still a lot of cool moments and I do plan on listening through again soon.

Thanks as always for the posts, I hope everyone reading has a nice day :)

I've heard of Tame Impala, but never actually listened to them before (AFAICR). After the first track, my immediate thought was "not my cup of tea" but I decided to give them a fair shake by listening to the whole album anyways. It kinda grew on me by the end, and I can definitely see the appeal, with it being an easy and unchallenging listen. They kinda reminded me of Daft Punk, since they use some similar funk/disco elements in their tracks, only they were much mellower and with all DP's hard-edge sounds ground down. So I suspect Tame Impala is probably a lot better for background noise rather than a critically-focused listen like I gave it, since it got a bit boring to listen to like that, despite still being a relatively pleasant experience.

Tame Impala still isn't my cup of tea, and I honestly can't see myself listening to this album in full ever again. However, there were a few tracks I could see fitting into some of my more relaxed playlists, like Lost In Yesterday, which I think I actually have heard before (perhaps on the radio). So yeah, bit of a mixed bag for me. At least now I can say I have listened to a Tame Impala album though. :P

You might want to check out the first tame impala album, Innerspeaker. It's a lot more on the rock side of psychedelic rock, definitely my favorite of the bunch.

Ah, okay. I didn't realize their albums were that different, stylistically. I'll check it out. Thanks for the recommendation. :) Edit: First track is already way more to my taste than anything on...

Edit: First track is already way more to my taste than anything on Slow Rush. Still pretty mellow, but a lot more classic psych rock sounding, which I enjoy. 👍
