I have also been listening to this song an unhealthy amount. I think what really speaks to me is the way the lyricism so succinctly expresses being infatuated, but not really in love. It's a kind of tricky distinction (especially in real life!) that Nolan really nails imo, and in a pretty funny way.

"I think her eyes are blue,
    Or green,
    Or something in between
    "

Besides being a super catchy hook, this line really emphasizes to me that the singer is in love with some image rather than a person. Her eyes are some pretty colour (probably), but what was it? Does it matter? It's an attraction where the singer is hazy on even the physical level. Also,

"I think I found the one.
    She writes copy,
    And likes coffee,
    OK I don't know much.
    "

Lol. But again, the abruptness between "she's the one" and then barely even knowing any surface level details is so real. This is definitely me reading too much into it, but it's almost like a commentary on modern online dating where you're promised you'll find that special someone, and then you're presented with 2 sentence profiles that barely tell you anything.

I also like really noisy songs so the mixing doesn't really faze me, but I can see how this isn't for everyone. But if you're a fan of y2k pop-punk (like Avril Lavigne, Blink-182, etc) I feel like you'd like this.

Glad to find someone else here who enjoys it! I'm on the same page. All of the tracks released so far are whimsical, fun, and relatable. They have a nostalgically youthful charm to them and feel very intentionally crafted with the titling and storylines. I'm excited to hear more in October, as he says on Instagram (alt frontends: kittygram, imginn):

tbh we didn’t drop the best songs yet, i just wanted it to come out in order of the tracklist

This is first of 3 singles from his upcoming album "indie movie soundtrack", out October 2nd. The album rollout has been fun, with short skit videos in between the single music videos giving the album's storyline.

Has anyone else been listening? Or if this is your first time hearing of it, what do you think?

videos for the other singles: of everyone in the world..., drama queens

I think I like the music itself, but something about the way it's mixed makes it unlistenable to me. Sounds like my speakers are blown out or something even when I have the volume down low....

Entirely possible that's the sound they were going for, but it invokes a nails-on-chalkboard physical reaction in me.

While I can't speak much on the finer points of mixing and mastering, I can tell you it's almost certainly a stylistic choice. I don't know much about Forrest Nolan or his history with music, having only come across him recently, but the exaggerated, "blown out" production seems very hyperpop influenced.

Largely attributed to SOPHIE, hyperpop is/was an avant-garde microgenre that has had an outsized influence on modern music. Spreading through the PC Music label and artists she produced for (some of which you may have heard of), and likely contributing to the styles of popular but polarizing artists like 100 gecs and quannnic, it has been distilled, tamed, and incorporated into a wide variety of young, modern artists.

Some people may consider it unlistenable noise, but it clearly connects with others.
