I feel like this doesn't really play to their strengths. There's some wild shit on here but I look to Death Grips for one of a few things: Ride going all out rapping over aggressive / just weird beats, really catchy hooks, or (in the case of TPTB mostly) really ambitious songwriting that just sounds massive and important, if that makes sense.
YotS has one track of the first option ("Streaky" sounds like a BP track), but otherwise they throw that all away. That doesn't automatically make it bad and I'm trying to shift my expectations, but I can't help but feel they're not as good at this style. When I think of what I would want for a "difficult" Death Grips record, I would prefer something more along the lines of "Hot Head" than what we get here. It's still good and there are some absolutely otherworldly moments on here, though.
Only "Hahaha" and "Shitshow" stick with me after the first listen, which isn't a great sign.
Yeah, imo it sounds a lot more like (them as) the ILY's pushing in a certain direction, instead of DG. I remember listening to bottomless pit when it first came out, and I had a moment where it...

I remember listening to bottomless pit when it first came out, and I had a moment where it didn't click or anything, but I was intrigued, I wanted to listen more. And eventually (ok, within a day or two) I came to like the record a lot. I didn't have that with this. Maybe that'll change, maybe another listen in a few days will have me seeing it differently, but it just seemed... bland? Like they tried some things and it wasn't that interesting because it didn't work. Like you said, not to their strengths.
Thoughts on it?
