Dizzy's definitely one of the best trumpet players of all time, and helped create the whole bebop genre. It's been a while since I really listened or studied jazz, but this sounds early to me, and is pretty accessible - I could play this for people who don't really "get" jazz and they'd still "get it".

    Great song!

I have been reading Dizzy's autobiography and I was struck by how much he loved his big bands. Dizzy's contributions to small group bebop are legendary, but in his book he kept coming back to how great and innovative he thought his big bands were. There are some great examples from the '40s but they are somewhat lo-fi by modern standards. But this recording has the same killer level of musicianship and it is recorded beautifully too.
