I used to have an overnight radio show on WWOZ in New Orleans, but I moved away from there over 15 years ago. Ever since then I have been pining to have another show of my own, but other than an occasional substitute shift on some small stations, it never happened. But recently I saw that @arghdos is posting his own radio shows on mixcloud, and I realized that mixcloud is actually a great medium for the show I want to make. So I finally got off my butt and did it. At long last, it's time to let my record collection loose.

Presenting episode 1 of my new show, The Big Dig: Excavations In Jazz. (no connection to Boston, btw.)

Nice work, I can dig it... :) Looks like I've found my soundtrack for today.

This has been fantastic! I love listening to jazz but I know absolutely nothing about it, so it's nice to know my ears are in good hands. Who was playing in the background while you were talking...

Who was playing in the background while you were talking just before 1:45:00 or so? It sounded like a cover of Kashmir...

Hey, thanks. That was Kashmir, but the artist is a mystery. It's something I found in our computer system at work, mysteriously only labeled "Kashmir Dub." The person who originally put it in there couldn't remember the artist. The only clue I could find online was that Sly & Robbie once did an album of Zeppelin covers, but I can't find any audio of their version of Kashmir and thus can't confirm if that's the one.

Oh my god, of course I pick out the completely unknown track. Please don't tell me the backing track just before 2:00:00 is a mystery too...

It's kinda difficult to get hold of this album. And it's not ever been popular enough to make its way onto "popular download sites". I think this is the only track from it that's on YouTube

The music at 2:00:00 is a version of Milestones by Jerry Garcia and David Grisman, from this CD.

As the resident Dead nerd, I'm fairly ashamed of my self that I had forgotten about this CD. As penance, I submit for consideration the only (known) recording of JGB playing So What in '78

This is awesome! I've only recently started to get into jazz so I needed a way to discover some good tracks and that's exacly what radio shows are great for.

Thanks man. It's partly your fault that I'm doing this. Glad you're into it.

Mixcloud is a pretty handy platform. Have you tried hearthis.at? https://hearthis.at/ Might net you a few more listens. I'll give this a listen when I get home.

I've never heard of hearthis but I can't find any info about their copyright policies. Mixcloud appealed to me because they have agreements in place with labels and publishers to pay royalties to the artists, so I won't ever have to worry about takedown requests.

I know a few people who moved lots of their stuff after Universal invested in SoundCloud and went nuts on takedowns of mixes and reedits. I don't think any of them have had anything taken down....

I know a few people who moved lots of their stuff after Universal invested in SoundCloud and went nuts on takedowns of mixes and reedits. I don't think any of them have had anything taken down. From what I understand, they're pretty good at communicating, so it might be worth shooting them an email.

The jazz was good, but when someone started talking, I just skipped over it, ASAP. More jazz. No talking, as the text description does just fine.

This negates the whole "radio-show" aspect of it. I get that it's not everyone's thing (particularly at work, when you're focused on other things) but a good radio host will leave you with way more insight than a text description ever would (considering most people wouldn't even read it). Besides, if that's really what you're interested in there are plenty of mixtape based jazz shows (that is, with minimal voice-overs) on mixcloud (e.g., the great MADONJAZZ).

Besides, /u/boredop's radio voice makes my own look sad and pathetic -- gotta show them dulcet tones some love :P

OK, try a spotify playlist I made instead. (disclaimer: about 50% of the stuff I wanted to put in that playlist is missing from spotify. such a shitty platform.)
