If you haven't seen Bobby McFerrin - who is a treasure - play the audience during this Ted talk, you should watch. Even if you've watched it, you might want to watch it again because of how delightful it is. It's a great example of how ingrained the pentatonic scale is in western music.
Keep in mind that he only defines three of the notes. All the others the audience know by themselves.
