Can't help but feel like some of that is just because it's been shared in memes so much the past few years.

There are plenty of new Christmas songs written every year (look here and here for some examples). Most of them just come and go without much fuss. But, some of them break out of the crowd and become hits - and get covered by every artist who wants to do a Christmas album!

And then, every now and then, there seems to be a breakout Christmas super-hit.

      • 1950s: Santa, baby

      • 1960s: It's The Most Wonderful Time of the Year

      • 1970s: Happy Xmas (War is Over)

      • 1980s: Last Christmas

      • 1990s: All I Want For Christmas Is You

      • 2000s: (possibly too early to tell?)

I've been hearing Mariah Carey, and various covers of 'All I Want For Christmas Is You', on high rotation every year for the past 25 years. This isn't a new phenomenon.
