E - I'll be doing a review series on this on Staining The Timbre over the coming weeks, starting with Gunna releasing later today. I'll try to provide links to the reviews as they are released in this comment. I'll be using their most recent work or most highly acclaimed (or in the case of YK Osiris, his four most popular tracks) for reviewing purposes, as I've never heard anything by any of these artists before. Enjoy!

I'm curious what anyone else who keeps up with hip hop here thinks about this still being a thing and if it's worth continuing with prevailing trends in the genre not really lending themselves to cyphers and even less so to freestyling.

I'm of two minds. On one hand, it's weird to have these artists participate in something that clearly has completely different values from what they're doing in their music and it's probably a bit of a harmful factor stopping people from judging these artists on their own merits by criteria that fits what they're going for. On the other, the 2016 freshman class showed that chemistry and energy can lead to something pretty great from artists aren't at all lyrical and that it might still be worth doing it this way.

...but the years since haven't followed suit, so I don't know.
