Jim Henson is the first celebrity I've ever felt bad for having died. His death really was the end of an era; even as puppets are becoming semi-robotic, they still aren't done with quite the same skill and artistry as when Henson was in charge.

The Muppets are a kind of an underplayed yet perfect example of how important he was. There is a reason why all of the shows featuring them after he died felt so sanitized. Even with some extremely talented people behind them, they simply don't have what made Henson's productions so unique. The originals were born out of the synergy of Henson and Oz's personality. The Muppets themselves are all extentions of the types of jokes they wanted to tell, which is why it's not funny when they are taken out of their respective elements.

Of course, I'm not saying that none of the Muppets productions after Henson's death are bad. I really enjoyed The Muppets Most Wanted, and it's got some of the best comedic music I've ever heard. And honestly, most of Henson's productions had plenty of flaws to them. The new shows have magic, too - it's just a different kind of magic.
