    I first heard about him when I first started looking into the city pop genre. It's a shame that it didn't really go anywhere beyond Japan, because it's filled with really great music with insanely talented musicians.

    Edit: Yeah, Takanaka isn't necessarily city pop (he's his own genre if anything), but he's adjacent to it. If you want to hear something more akin to city pop, check out T-Square. Specifically listen to Truth. It sounded super nostalgic the first time I heard it, and it turns out that it was because it's been used by Fuji TV to advertise their F1 coverage for over a decade.
