I just got done watching the documentary about the NYC blues duo Satan and Adam on Netflix, and I am blown away. An old friend of mine in New Orleans used to tell me about seeing these guys when he lived in NYC in the '80s but I never got around to checking them out till tonight. What was I waiting for?
Sterling Magee is a guitarist and singer who played with a number of big-time artists in the '50s and '60s. By the mid-1980s he was living in Harlem and playing every day on the streets as a one man band, calling himself Mr. Satan. Around that time he was spotted by a young harmonica player and Princeton graduate named Adam Gussow, who asked to sit in. They hit it off, and a long partnership as Satan and Adam began. They appeared in U2's Rattle and Hum, and eventually took the show on the road, touring in North America and Europe. The good times came to an end for a while in 1998 due to medical problems, but the duo reunited in the mid-2000s to perform and record again. They played their final gig in 2016, on Mr. Satan's 80th birthday.
That doc looks right up my alley. Added it to my watchlist, and since my dad is a massive blues fan, I will make sure he hears about it as well. Thanks for the recommendation. :)
