Norwegian Melodi Grand Prix 2020 semi-final 1 - songs and results
Eurovision season is finally here! Last night was the first semi-final of the Norwegian national selection (Melodi Grand Prix). This year there are 5 semi-finals, one for each region of the country, plus five songs that automatically qualify for the grand final.
Last night four songs competed for a spot in the grand final:
The qualifier was Raylee with her song Wild, which will face 9 other songs in the grand final on the 15th of February. One of the automatic qualifiers were also presented during the show:
Offtopic, but I'm still super disappointed that Hungary has withdrawn from the 2020 contest, especially since it seems like the decision might have been motivated by homophobia. :( Joci Pápai's 2017 entry was my personal favorite of that year, and I was happy to see him again in 2019, even though the song/performance wasn't quite as good IMO. It sucks we won't get to see what Hungary has to offer in 2020.
p.s. I enjoyed Raylee - Wild, it was super catchy... so I can definitely see why it progressed over the others (which were all a bit bland IMO). Sondrey - Take My Time was much better overall, and way less cliche/cheesy though.
Hungary added much-needed diversity to the competition, so I hope they'll be back soon. The five Norwegian songs revealed so far all sounds to me like they are very inspired by songs that have done well in Eurovision in recent years, instead of trying to do something new and exciting.
Heh, yeah. One of my friends who is super into Eurovision said Raylee's Wild is basically Fuego, and I have to admit there seems to be way too many parallels between them to be a coincidence.
