Just rediscovered one of those albums from my teens that perfectly vibed with my mood then and somehow still holds up now, many years later. If I were to describe this album's style, I'd have to say "pop depression." (More technically, it's indie pop with hip hop styled vocals.) I can't get over some of the lyrical lines, from "Am I an example of a calculated birth / to a star chart for clowns" to "Even though I haven't seen you in years / yours is a funeral I'd fly to from anywhere" to "I sleep on my back 'cos it's good for the spine / and coffin rehearsal". Sounds like the outtakes from a depressed teenager's poetry chapbook, but combined with the upbeat melodic lines it's somehow transcendent.
