Manu Chao's previous band, La Mano Negra, was somehow hip and alternative back when I was in college last century. When this album, Próxima Estación: Esperanza was released in 2001, it was heavily promoted by big stores and mainstream radios. I bought it straight away anyway, but I felt a little bit old and sad, as if my tempestuous youth had been normalized.
Twenty years ago, already.
My old CDs had been gathering dust in a corner for a few years now, but just last week, in a fit of nostalgia and rebellion against all things digital, I brought them back to the front row, and the first album I played was precisely this one. Si, me gusta, siempre ;-)
While I wasn't proper fan, I did like Mano Negra a lot and completely lost interest when Manu Chao was formed. Probably same feelings as you, too "poppy" for my tastes.
