There has been a bit of a row around a recent comment of Biden's:

It’s one thing if it’s a minor incursion, and then we end up having a fight about what to do and not do, et cetera. But if they actually do what they’re capable of doing with the force amassed on the border, it is going to be a disaster for Russia.

I think this sentiment basically continues our more isolationist streak - which is something I prefer. I do not want us to posture like we're solely responsible for the defense of Europe against increasing Russian aggression. Europeans (big generalization of course) for better or worse should be asserting more agency and responsibility over their own existential fates. They need to get more serious about Russia. It's stating the obvious that if Russia does do a "minor" incursion, of course we in the U.S. don't want to get directly involved and escalate that and get in another quagmire in a faraway place.

Part of why Russia is able to get away with these aggressive moves and posturing is because of how dependent Europe is on Russia's natural gas for energy needs, but then you look the other way and see Germany doing things like shutting down all their nuclear power plants which gets in the way of energy independence from Russia (France to its credit is going heavy on nuclear now). It's clear many are trying to have their cake and eat it too by taking American military posturing power for granted. Biden just doesn't know how to spin this isolationist sentiment to his benefit the same way Trump did. The average American does not really care about Ukraine at the end of the day and doesn't want our people dying for that country and the average American's life would not be any different if Ukraine fell to Russia, all that matters to most people is whether or not we look "strong" or "weak" in our response, and you can still look strong without committing to involvement, which is something Trump was good at. I bring up Trump basically because I think is a good example of how Biden is failing to spin something such that basically no one likes his approach, while Trump could've gotten away with a similar statement (in spirit) and been praised by enough to matter.
