This is great news and a diplomatic victory for the US (and other nations who had their citizens freed), in my opinion.
Among those freed was Vladimir Kara-Murza, a Russian journalist and dissident who has been imprisoned for "discrediting the military" in relation the Ukraine war, after two failed poisonings. He also was instrumental in getting the Magnitsky act passed in the US, a sore spot in Russia-US relations. I fully expected him to die in a Russian prison, so seeing him released is unexpected and great to see. Read his statement at his sentencing last year.
Also among the released is Ilya Yashin, a Russian opposition leader. This is notable in relation to reports that Navalny was supposed to be a part of this swap before he was killed earlier this spring.
Another person who was imprisoned for "discrediting the Russian army" and now released is Oleg Orlov, chairman of the Nobel Prize-winning human rights organization Memorial.
