I have a fairly dim view of the state of democracy in the United States. It's a sham, and there's a lot of ways it could be better. However we should take any measures we can to guard against direct manipulation of votes. For the White House's actions here to be legitimate there must be very compelling reasons not to strengthen election security in the bill. I see no reason to believe that there are any compelling reasons, and in fact this bill is being blocked to directly benefit Donald Trump. When elected representatives won't take steps to safeguard elections, what recourse is there? I feel like we're watching our institutions slip away in plain daylight.

A paper record could prove effective against hackers if they tried to change the reporting of votes on the internet, as opposed to altering the votes themselves. Election officials needs to be able to say, “‘Nope, we can check this,’” as Lankford puts it. “Here’s the paper, here’s the machine, here’s our poll count.”
