Asians are considered white by a lot of college emissions boards, that was literally the reason for the suit that overturned Affirmative Action.

But that's the thing, it's still not a racist policy.

The percentage of legacy students is majority white sure. Because historically the nation didn't provide a good path for minorities to go to college. That is no longer the case.

Even looking at Harvard, 35% of Legacy Admissions (in 2016) where people of color. Considering that the black population only accounts for 13% of the American population that is pretty high. The majority of the nation is white, that's not a fact that's going to magically go away because we want more diversity.

I honestly don't get the issue with legacy enrollment. Being a legacy is a good thing and there is nothing that states that legacies have to be a certain class or demographic.

Affirmative Action, while well intentioned, was ultimately a rasict policy. It prevented one form of racism in college admission by creating a different racist issue.

Legacy Admissions isn't inherently racist, and while people want to attack it like it is, fundamentally that's not what it is.

Yes; Historically more white (male) Americans graduated college than any other demographic. Historically the upper echelon of colleges was only available to the wealthy.

This is no longer true, and hasn't been true in decades.

So why should the next generation of minority and ethnic Americans not be allowed to be legacies at their parents schools? Why should the children of minority college graduates not be afforded the same benefit that the historically white graduates have gotten?

I'm curious where you get the basis for this statement, because there is not and never has been a Supreme Court ruling that would back up such a statement.

According to the supreme court, race no longer needs to be a protected class in America

Gotta try and find a way to boost your numbers. I currently average 60-70 books a year. But I also read multiple books at a time which helps a lot. Still i definitely own more books than I can read.

I actually agree with your sentiment about not wanting to read on a screen. I only use my kindle for certain circumstances and most of my reading is still done the traditional way. Although I will say the ink screen of the Kindle is much easier on the eyes than reading from a phone screen, it really does read like paper. The kindle just makes it so I have even more opportunities for reading where traditional books might not be practical.

    Reading.

I've talked about my personal library on here before but it's quite extensive (pushing maybe 3k books now). I have a small selection of rare and vintage books, multiple editions of my favorite series, some really cool antique encyclopedia sets but honestly the thing that has cost me the most money was when I bought a kindle.

Now I will buy books on the Kindle for convince and then still buy the physical book for my collection. It was already expensive at the rate that I read, but the addion of the kindle effectively doubled my costs.

Yes I am aware that I technically do not have to buy the physical book, but I really need to.

The cost of ammo is downright depressing. I stopped going to the rang as much over the last few years because of it.

Suddenly Frodo noticed that a strange-looking weather-beaten man, sitting in the shadows near the wall, was also listening intently to the hobbit-talk. He had a tall tankard in front of him, and was smoking along-stemmed pipe curiously carved. His legs were stretched out before him, showing high boots of supple leather that fitted him well, but had seen much wear and were now caked with mud. A travel-stained cloak of heavy dark-green cloth was drawn close about him, and in spite of the heat of the room he wore a hood that overshadowed his face; but the gleam of his eyes could be seen as he watched the hobbits.

I first read LotR in fifth grade. It was one of the first novels I ever read truly for myself. It started me down a long path of high fantasy reading that persists to this day.

I idolized Aragorn as a kid (still do a bit) and loved everything about his character and lore. Andúril and his Ranger sword currently hang above my desk.

With the exception of a few years skipped I have reread the book yearly since the mid 90s. The paragraph above when Aragorn is first described has always heald a special place in my heart (it's a great scene in the movie as well).

There are many other amazing scenes but this is by far my favorite (admittedly nostalgia plays a big role in my choice).

One of the things that brought me here a few years ago was the quality of posts. It reminds me of when reddit was in its prime as a community (2008-2014ish).

I think since a lot of the reddit refugees coming to Tildes now are reddit old guard then they might fit in well when the dust settles.

Yup this is the reality of this API move. This is killing off us in the old guard. A lot of young users don't know anything beyond the redesign and new official app. Obviously it's the worst way to view and interact with reddit, but they don't know better so this change will mean nothing to them.

It's just reddit purging the user base that actually built the site which is really depressing.

While it's not an important part of a game, I am a sucker for random little details. Stuff like playing an open world game and going into a seemingly random shack in the woods and uncovering a story about the building from context clues. Sometimes fun or creepy, but not relevant to the actual plot of the game. It's just a fun addition left by the devs.

Also, I've been chasing that feeling of playing Fallout 3 for the first time, having picked up the game out of the grab bin at gamestop, and coming out of vault 101 for the first time seeing how big the game really is. I know the game is pretty aged now but I will never forget how much my mind was blown by that.

RiF shutting down marks the end of me as a reddit user.

I watched reddit grow into the best community online, then watched it slide into decine and while I'm not going to delete my accounts, I will not be a daily user with out RiF.

Honestly it's been a major part of my life for such a long time I don't really know how to feel.

Its really interesting that you think any of those are solely right leaning, they are pretty universally held ideas that people on both sides of the political spectrum have.
