I'd been waiting to pull the plug at midnight Pacific time. Looks like Reddit went ahead and did it for us around midnight UTC time which is 7 hours ahead.
Thanks Redditors-cum-Tildos for your kind words.
In some way kind of a relief it's finally over. Past weeks have been a time and energy black hole. So overwhelming. So thankful Tildes has been here to occupy my attention.

Speaking of, I always got a chuckle from comments on and off Reddit when people would name drop their apps, "I saw on Apollo today...", "This morning on Sync...", but rarely heard RIF. Instead it was always "Saw the news on my third-party Reddit app". Loved that.
In my mind "rif is fun" was like saying "atm machine" because rif stands for reddit is fun, thus 'reddit is fun is fun' which I wholeheartedly agree with. Beautiful app @talklittle

Thanks for everything you did with RiF. It made up the majority of my 13 year Reddit experience. I haven't been back properly since the blackouts and I won't be going back.

Still works fine if you're not signed in, for me at least. Cleared the cache and data for it in Adnroid App settings earlier today and it started working again just fine.

I just can't help myself in this case, rif gp was such a wonderfully minimalistic yet also productive app (which helped me be far less productive), and I used it for the better part of a decade. Thank you so much for all time and effort you've put into it!
And I look forward to reading this in Three Cheers for Tildes (I love that name btw)!

It was sureal yesterday when I went to refresh and saw nothing but a 429 error. It was even moreso when I went and uninstalled rif. When I reached the store page to click that uninstall button, I was reminded I reviewed your app way back in 2014. I'm at a loss as I don't know how to use reddit on mobile without. I'm going as long as I can without reddit now and hoping it will improve my life a tiny bit.
Thanks for years of mobile content ingestion, it would have been a different world without rif.

I still haven't gotten my history download link from reddit either, so... I may just have to deal with it and delete it all without it.
14 years of content.... Poofed away by one morons decision.

Thank you so much for all the work you've done over the years. I've been using reddit is fun throughout high school and college and am sorry to see it shut down.
I tried using the main reddit app for a few hours earlier today and it's just so unbearably clunky and bloated compared to your work, I'm glad I didn't have to wait for long to get my invite to Tildes.
With that being said I'm very excited to see your work when you release an app for Tildes. Since there aren't any ads here I'm guessing there won't be a Tildes Pro version, but I'll happily donate to help you out if you've got a PayPal or Patreon set up.

I waited to see if Reddit would listen to their userbase and maybe come up with a compromise that would be fair, open up a new revenue stream, and allow for apps such as RIF. It's sad that a fragile, manchild's ego has done the damage that it has. I have deleted my 9+ year-old Reddit account and am not looking back. I am excited to see what you come up with for Tildes though!

Over 10 years using the RIF app and it WAS Reddit to me. Thank you talklittle.
I'm fine if a business wants to make decisions to enhance their profit. There are ways to do that in compassionately. Partner with smart people that are 3rd party apps. In this case, I don't appreciate how devs, mods, and longtime users have been treated throughout this drama. The CEO of Reddit and leadership have their heads in the clouds and they have another goal in mind. I have been part of executive teams and their decisions are driven by other initiatives, metrics, politics, and people. In this case Reddit is not addressin the culture that built it. That said, the site will live on as subs close or are replaced. The motivation to mod (for FREE!) is declining as the community isn't respected by it's keepers. Reddit will live on undoubtedly but with quality decline. Over 80% of users don't use the apps and some just are there for the content. They don't care about the frustrating politics that are driving their social hunger. The just want to consume. The community that built the foundation and behaviors around the culture of old Reddit are stepping away. There is more of a heavy hand to control the site that make it less attractive to the minority that keep the ecosystem thriving. Memes, bots, AI, and trolls will slowly suck the fun out of the discourse. Now it's a slow enshitification of a platform that's past its glory.
Now I'm here finding new friends and discussion. I see it as an opportunity to improve my digital social habits with folks like yourselves.

Honestly this is what bothers me the most. Reddit gets free labor from their mods and can't even provide them adequate mod tools - something the mods have been begging reddit for forever. Reddit has a history of promising to make changes, deliver better tools, etc. and then just never delivering (Reddit promised CSS on new reddit over 6 years ago and it still says coming soon in the mod settings).
I agree reddit has a right to charge for API access. But if their goal is to offset costs, then they're going about this wrong. It's obvious the real goal was to destroy the third party app ecosystem without explicitly saying so. They went to control everything in a walled garden to maximize ad revenue. But at least fucking have the guts to admit that. I respect Elon Musk and Twitter because at least they were honest and upfront about their motivations when they cut off third party app support. Still think it's dumb and bad for the users, but they didn't fuck up their PR and communication at every step of the way.

Reddit also runs on free discourse, links and original submissions from a small percentage of users. Estimates vary, but only a small fraction (10-15% would be generous) of users interact with the comments, and a smaller percentage actually post. Most are just mindlessly scrolling.
Reddit is driving off the users who actually make the site worth using, and the low engagement users are throwing a tantrum that they've had their free candy taken away. i.e. they expect others to post and others to moderate so they can have their meme drip, and blame this situations on moderators, not grasping that the users with the highest engagement are angry too and are leaving.

My redditing is about to decrease substantially. It's actually kind of good, in a way. I was addicted and can find other things to spend my time on.

I don't know how long RIF was around but I feel like I've been using it since nearly the digg migration. It's been 80% of my mobile usage for like 5 generations of phones.
For now I'm refusing to visit reddit or old.reddit and I keep tapping my RIF icon out of instinct. It's a legit habit and possibly an addiction. I'm hoping I'll find new shit to do, but man it was the greatest app ever.
I was so full of stupid facts and information that my friends think I'm smart, but I just memorized the same reddit reposts after 10+ years. I saw everyone's stupid meme or viral video before they saw it on fb. I felt way ahead of trends and opinions because reddit was sort of that underground place where I caught info before anyone else did, aside from some news stories where reddit wasn't the best source.
I'm gonna totally miss the wealth of information and trends, but I can't support these dipshits anymore. If we all plant our feet in the ground and get off reddit there will be a new place to pop up and replace it soon. Hopefully it's here. Miss you guys.
I feel the exact same way. Over 11 years on reddit and the vast majority were on RIF. It was definitely an addiction and maybe I'll do something more useful with my time now.

I was on Reddit and so were many other people not necessarily because of how it looked but because the community was there and with the community came loads of content.

There's no downside to having an app. I came from rif, and it was just very usable and accessible. Lots of people don't want to mess around with their browser while on their mobile devices, so it becomes a barrier that holds people back. Having an app brings in new people, makes existing people wanting an app happy and PC users can still enjoy the browser.

Well, the community on here is currently growing considerably. I think we already achieved a decent base that's large enough to attract a steady flow of new people who are interested in the type of constructive discussion happening on here. But with the current growth it's kinda hard to predict where the journey is going.
As for having an app: That's not about the looks necessarily. It's the simple usability features like notifications or touch friendly UI elements. RIF achieved a nice balance of ensuring good mobile usability but keeping the old-reddit like style we also see on here, even when reddit itself switched to its new, flashy and bloaty layout.
So all-in-all I think it'll be a good fit for this site.
Tildes now isn't much different than how reddit was over a decade ago. This community will keep growing and growing. Apps will only streamline the user experience for many people.

For other upsides:
people used to posting on apps may be encouraged to talk/post more. Reasons to prefer an app to a website is a topic in and of itself.
different methodologies of site design can be chosen from to give everyone their own best way to browse
as history shows, certain features in apps may one day be used as a model for the main site, improving the experience even for those who never use 3rd party apps.

If the price is right, I might still pay for relay, but only if the remaining users continue to put up good content in the communities I follow.
Either way, I am sure I'll find a good place for doom scrolling. Hopefully Tildes! :)

Rest in peace RIF, and thanks for the many years of good service. Sad to see reddit die such an unnecessary and avoidable death. :(
But hey, at least Tildes and Lemmy form a light at the end of the tunnel. I'm excited to see both of those platforms grow and develop such awesome communities as they are right now. ^^

Not necessarily... there are a few apps already that simply parse the HTML content and restructure it into a native app. The dev of RIF already has a MVP named Three Cheers for Tildes that will be cross-platform (Android + iOS). There are a couple other apps (Backtick, Surfboard) for iOS that are also in early beta.
An API would definitely be nice, but there are stopgaps happening in the meantime!

Goodbye RIF. I was still accessing Reddit through the app this whole time. Today, I went to it out of habit and it couldn't load.

My account is 11 years old, but I was lurking for longer. It has been a good ride.
My reddit consumption has already reduced significantly with the alternatives being available. Especially Tildes. I'm still going to visit reddit from time to time for very niche things that doesn't exist elsewhere. But it's going to be on old.reddit on pc.
But once old.reddit is gone, not sure what I would do.
I'm really glad Tildes exists though. Reddit has been declining for years and I've been looking for something else for a long time. Tildes is just what I've been looking for.

Back in the early 2000s I was super into the 'forum scene,' making skins/themes/styles/graphics/PHP mods for the popular forum software of the time... phpBB, Invision Board, even vBulletin. I'm so nostalgic for the old internet. I wonder if this is how boomers feel about "the good ol' days?" A moment in time that was good, but you didn't know it, and now you can't get it back no matter how hard you try.

And the fact that so many niche communities were in the same place was great. My subscribed subreddits were the result of years of active curation combined with stumbling across tiny communities I never would have even thought to look for. And then I could participate in all of them from one app or website.
Web forums like phpBB et al. aren't bad, but you have to hit up a bunch of different websites to follow multiple communities.
I do also prefer tree-style comment sections, Ć” la Tildes, Reddit, and Slashdot, as opposed to the linear style present in phpBB and Discourse, among others.

Other than the privacy issues I am also very much bothered by how they handled the whole situation. I really do not wanna bring them business if I can. Still, not having city subreddits or small specialised ones anymore (r/refrigeration for example) is a huge bummer; those stroke the perfect size/content quality ratio and are pretty much irreplaceable...
I know one could still access old reddit on pc, but to me it just doesn't feel the same: it's clunky, difficult to navigate and impractical.

Man, just talked about RIF in past tense for the first time. Reddit was always imperfect but for a time it was at least good. This is a sad day.

My reddit account is turning 9 years old in 2 weeks, and I used to be an hour+ per day user (cold turkey stopped, essentially, after that disaster ama that made it very clear what reddit thinks of its users).
Weird feeling... Been enjoying Tildes a lot though, I really like a lot about it and enjoy the slower, more chill pace.

This fucking sucks, man. I'm gonna try to avoid bringing a negative energy into my comments in the future, but I gotta express my feelings about this right now.
Thanks for the memories, @talklittle. Can't wait to buy the next app you make.

With RIF gone, I can delete my reddit account with regret. I loved that app, it's been with me for longer than almost anything in my current life. More than years, longer than Reddit had an app, almost as long as Reddit itself. I have a lot of gratitude for reddit -- a redditor saved my ass when I was unemployed in 2010, and I'll never forget that. But RIF worked with Reddit for a decade. If that company can make a "business decision" to hurt a partner almost as old as the site itself (certainly as old as the site's mainstream relevance) then my heart tells me it's simply not the same company as the one who ridiculed other companies for putting business over the well-being of their communities.
I'm angry. I'm feeling grief. This app was thing that relaxed me when I couldn't sleep, that comforted me during indescribable grief and crises. This app was there, and now it's not. I've deleted my reddit account, my reddit posts. I expect to pop in on occasion -- some communities there are irreplaceable currently -- but never with their mobile app, and never without bitterness. Fuck Spez.
It's true, it's not the same company. It's not the same place really. Also, I only found out about reveddit like a few days ago, and realizing that many of my comments were removed, while...
It's true, it's not the same company. It's not the same place really. Also, I only found out about reveddit like a few days ago, and realizing that many of my comments were removed, while appearing visible and posted to me, made me feel really gross and icky. Like I thought I was just not getting any reaponse, but turns out I was being removed and lied to about it. That knowledge makes deleting my account feel easy.

Huh, I mod a 50k+ sub that's been blacked out since immediately after the AMA and it's not on the list. I wonder if that's why I never got the nastygram from the admins?

This was a Cute Animals type sub, so completely ad friendly. Not super high traffic but got 2-3 posts a day with a few hundred votes (for reference it was r/moonmoon)

Those lists are user curated (maybe from ModCoord?). I'd assume that the admins also just pulled lists from user made lists (like in modcoord). Some subs have been privated for a while, for non-blackout reasons, so it's not as if you can just send the threat to every privated sub.
Neither is my 366-subscriber subreddit that gets like one post a year. Shocking that the admins haven't been knocking down my door trying to get me to reopen it.

The API is paid if you're not in the free tier and/or using it for commercial purposes. For the free tier, you still get 100 api calls/min, which should be enough for the site.

Aye, I was curious if they could actually do it within that limit. Not overly familiar with the reddit API but I believe they can get a maximum of 100 comments or 100 posts per page in a single API call. The graph of comments and posts per minute would be eat into that fairly quickly considering they can only potentially get a maximum of 10k results per minute and it shows ~8k comments and ~1.4k posts at its peak
I'm hopeful they've found a way around that (or I'm mistaken in my calculations) as it's interesting to see. But I wouldn't be surprised to see it drop off if they manage to get actually rate limited

It's possible to scrape it using old.reddit if necessary - as I understand things a lot of spam bots work that way instead of through the API as the API requires approval from the admins for each key (it's not an automated approval when you request one). It's far less efficient on both ends of the setup, but entirely possible to do.

Curious it it's just me or if anyone else is seeing Apollo crash on launch now? It's never done that for me, always rock-solid stable. I haven't opened it in about a week so I don't know if this just began. I expected the UI to load and just not retrieve anything post-shutdown, probably with a message from Christian on app launch. But just crashing hard like this is a surprise.
Edit: I posted too fast, and in the wrong thread. Just realized there's another discussion happening that's Apollo-specific, and someone else has noted the same crashing behavior in there.
Wait, so instead of allowing Christian to decommission his API key at midnight, Reddit nuked it early without warning? Talk about letting the door hit him on the way out. What petty jerks.

Yup, initially it was giving me a loading screen but now it's crashing. Looks like it's the end for all of them - going to delete my reddit account and not go back.

So far itās just endlessly loading for me which is fine cause I still want to play with my pixel pal (and sorry christian I really canāt justify a sub for his dedicated app just for a virtual pet).

Thanks a lot for your work over the years @talklittle. Such a shame it has to end this way but nothing we can do about it with an idiotic company as large as reddit.

But I started getting 429d about an hour ago and my first thought was, "I thought I had a little more time, š". Fuck spez for sure, but I'm grateful for the time RiF allowed me to have. 13 years total. Very bittersweet but I'm looking forward to the future of Tildes!

I'm glad to have found a new home at Tildes.

I deleted Apollo off of my iPad and RIF off of my Android phone earlier this month. It feels a bit surreal considering how long I have been on Reddit, but with the current economic climate we are only going to see more and more enshitification. I think going forward I am going to put a lot more of my time into using platforms that aren't for profit and held up by VC funds, it seems like the same thing keeps playing out on every platform where a change of management and / or the VC funds drying up results in the platform turning on users. I hope everyone is enjoying their day!

RiF shutting down marks the end of me as a reddit user.
I watched reddit grow into the best community online, then watched it slide into decine and while I'm not going to delete my accounts, I will not be a daily user with out RiF.
Honestly it's been a major part of my life for such a long time I don't really know how to feel.
Yea it really is grief. I keep opening my phone and clicking on the link and remember nothing is there. I ended up adding a Tildes chrome link to my home screen.

I wish I had thought to overwrite my comments with, "Thanks to the redditor who shared that critical info - promise you'll never delete it, because I couldn't find it anywhere else!" You know, just to increase the aggravation for future googlers....

First post for me. I don't have anything special to say that hasn't already been said in this thread, but I'm happy to see a lot of people feeling the same. I have been on reddit since before the digg migration and this is probably the final straw for me (that was probably the first time the site got worse imo). I really like the vibe here so hopefully this can be a good replacement. The only thing I will miss is all the niche communites. I wonder if they will find other homes, or if reddit will remain de facto forums for the internet.

To be honest, this was rather good for me. Since I've stopped using Reddit I got so much more productive in anything. So much time wasted, endlessly scrolling and looking at things that didn't even interest me. Stupid ape brain wanted it somehow.
I'm awaiting my GDPR response and then delete my account. (Which they seem to really take 30 days for) Comments are nuked, I'm done with this.

Anticipating Slide going down as well, albeit without as much fanfare as RiF and Apollo. It was a good little app, but hadn't been supported for a number of years. I had the paid version, and would have been happy to support it again if it were redeveloped and if Reddit didn't go down the tubes.
I'm happy to be here; the depth of conversation, effort that gets put into thoughtful comments, and general atmosphere of respect have been like a breath of fresh air. Sunrise, sunset.

The only thing reddit is useful for these days is search results with forced old.reddit and even then its getting less and less useful by the year. I already stopped commenting and lurked with RIF for the last year, but without that app I am completely done with the site. On the upside, it reminded me I had a tildes account!

To me, RIF was Reddit on mobile. I haven't logged in to Reddit any other way when away from my PC in over a decade. Now I just won't go to the site at all when I'm not home. No way I'll use their awful official app. I'm still in shock, to be honest. It's crazy that reddit is killing the app ecosystem that helped them grow into the huge platform they are today.

RIP RIF!
I haven't been on Reddit much this past month, but I hopped on today to use RIF one more time before deleting my account. These last five or so years of Reddit have been delivering increasingly diminishing returns for me, so I'm grateful to have this fire lit under me to migrate off the platform.
Tildes has been a revelation for me and helped me reconceptualize the way I engage with social media and bring my internet usage better in line with my values. For more niche interests, I've found myself returning to more traditional subject-focused discussion forums. When I get the impulse to doomscroll, I open up an ebook now instead.
RIF was always Reddit for me, and now that it's gone, I am too. The comfortable, minimalist design was the last thing keeping me there. Thank you for embodying a decade+ of Reddit for me and many others with RIF, @talklittle!

I used Boost for Reddit. And because of it I used Reddit.
Its amazing to see the CEO enforcing the new rules by not listening to is community and the mods who did all the for free. Threatening to remove them is crazy.
Instead of the Blackout I feel all the mods all together should have gone on strike without moderating any sub. This would have made him understand the importance of Mods who had done all the work for free, community building and making Reddit what it is today.
Ofcourse for the MODs who has given there effort for the communities they would have some attachment to it. And there will always be a set of people who would be there ready to get the chance to become a mod due to there xyz reasons.
Blackout meant the users are coming back although later there were other forms of protest but still there was Reddit usage.
Anyways I have uninstalled Boost today and removed the Reddit Bookmark from my Desktop PC.
The CEO of Reddit feels that Reddit is Titanic and it will never sink. We need to wait and watch what happens.

Yeah, the API change was the last straw for me. The amount of astroturfing and bot posting on Reddit is also unreal now. The narratives that come out of nowhere to 100+ similar comments in a matter of minutes is suspect. Including slandering the developers for these third party apps and the subreddit moderators that closed to protest.

I mean, I'm done. I spent <1% of my time on desktop...maybe it'll increase by a factor of 5 or so? But either way, it's way down from where it was - a 95% drop from me is not unlikely.

I guess I should be glad there's still third party option available, but it feels a bit... scabby. But I know isn't fair to the devs of the apps that decided to work with Reddit's new API policy. The whole thing just sucks.

I'm bummed I missed the window, because the alternative is much better, but I was legit grieving and avoidant of putting more hours into a process that was already not working for me, while also having to hover around Reddit and be bummed out. Just trying to be understanding with myself about why things turned out this way.

It's interesting that the apps that do continue seem to have gotten a grace period after all. I wonder if that had been the case without all the backlash.

I have already stopped browsing reddit, but was still checking the app now and then partly out of habit and partly to see if it was still working - and it never seemed to go down so I went researching. I bought the premium (no ads) version of the app years ago, so I never noticed any difference.

Well, I hope nobody ever says that again.
From the mind that conceived the name "rif is fun for Reddit".
Speaking of, I always got a chuckle from comments on and off Reddit when people would name drop their apps, "I saw on Apollo today...", "This morning on Sync...", but rarely heard RIF. Instead it was always "Saw the news on my third-party Reddit app". Loved that.
I had RiF on each of my phones for like ten years! Thanks for that. Glad to see you here.
Should have called it that!
What's funny about RIF? Am I missing something?
"Reddit is fun" and "rif is fun" are embarrassing names to say in public IMO.
Why would you be embarassed about that? That seems a bit silly.
I still don't get it :/
In my mind "rif is fun" was like saying "atm machine" because rif stands for reddit is fun, thus 'reddit is fun is fun' which I wholeheartedly agree with. Beautiful app @talklittle
I think his implication was that it is comparatively unoriginal.
OH !! š
I mean, is it really worse than the old āthe narwhal bacons at midnightā joke?
I just found an obscure social media site I joined in 2008. I almost evaporated from embarrassment.
You just reminded me, I used to frequent cherrytap/lost cherry/fubar.com once upon a timeā¦
I mean, most people definitely realized it was just a dumb meme at the time, but if you look at each element, thatās where the cringe comes in. Why exactly were we so collectively obsessed with narwhals (I remember the song, it was fun, but really?) and bacon?
I think the silly inside jokes are a part of what I'll miss the most. Like watching people react to the jolly rancher story for the first time. Lol Good stuff
Cringe is recognizing the growth.
That will be my mantra the next time I wake up in the middle of the night and cringe at that thing I said 20 years ago.
No promises.
You might have just convinced him to rename his app.
As OP, let me just say: You made Reddit addictive to me, and then an escape. I went from a college student to a grad student to a PhD to a professor. RIF is the definitive Reddit experience for me. Thank you for the many idle minutes of brain off time.
I loved RIF app. Thanks for the incredibly simple app.
I was wondering why it stopped working in the afternoon instead of midnight even EST. Isn't Reddit a US company? Guess they were worried about people deleting their posts/comments in the last hours of 6/30....
Looking forward to your Tildes app! <3
I assumed it stopped working because it had hit midnight UTC, and UTC is often the default time zone in tech.
Yeah now I'm doing a dumb thing where I browse in RiF, and if I really want to post a comment, I copy and paste the URL into Firefox and type it there.
One of the things that annoyed me about Reddit were all of the "Me too!" and "Thanks!" comments which add nothing to the discussion, and yet here I am doing exactly that...
You should rename the now defunct app to Reddit was Fun on the play store for the final act.
I loved your app, and it was the only way I really enjoyed using reddit, even RES wasnt the same. Thanks for all you did!
I tried calling it "rif" or "Reddit is fun" but both got a little wordy for conversation.
Yep. I was surprised too. But then again, not so much.
I uninstalled bacon reader for the first time in... Well... I don't know when.
I still haven't gotten my history download link from reddit either, so... I may just have to deal with it and delete it all without it.
14 years of content.... Poofed away by one morons decision.
Are you going to make Tildes is Fun next?
He's working on an app for Tildes, Three Cheers For Tildes.
I can't tell if this is a joke or not. I want it to be true.
No joke! He even has a thread around here somewhere. The theme of the app does a great job preserving the style choices of the tildes website based on the videos heās posted.
Oh, this is excellent news. I'm really enjoying tildes, but I would vastly prefer something contained in an app, rather than just living in my browser. Thanks!
TIF is fun for Tildes
Thanks you for all your work. I hope this is not a stopping point for you, but instead a pivot to building a wonderful interface app for Lemmy, or something else federated.
You still have millions of people behind you.
He's building an app for Tildes
Adding my voice to the chorus of thanks. Like many others here, RIF was reddit for me, and it was a great experience. Very much looking forward to your Tildes app!
Hope you are able to have aome peace and quiet this holiday weekend now that it's over.
Thanks for the years of fun. Looking forward to seeing what you're cooking up!
I really appreciate the time and effort you put into the app. I made sure to buy golden platinum before it got shut down.
I am excited to see what you come up with for Tildes though!
hey thanks man
Over 10 years using the RIF app and it WAS Reddit to me.
EDIT
Grammar
I miss what reddit used to be. Fuck spez.
The death will be slow and Reddit will continue to exist in some capacity. I mean, MySpace and Digg still "exist".
I just uninstalled. I actually had the paid version. Oh well, heavy heart but looking forward to Tildes.
Same, like 10 years of RIF, paid version as well. Sad to see it go but I'm starting to like this place a lot more. Talklittle is making an app for here and I'll be grabbing it day one and doing premium for it as well if it's an offer.
Also 10-11 years of RIF usage here. I'm amazed at how many people have nearly a decade of RIF under the belt. It was basically reddit for me.
I replaced the RIF (RIP) icon with a shortcut straight to Tildes.
I did the same thing. Muscle memory takes way longer than I'm willing to wait for to forget.
I feel the exact same way. Over 11 years on reddit and the vast majority were on RIF. It was definitely an addiction and maybe I'll do something more useful with my time now.
No doubt! I actually thought RIF was the reddit app for a long time because there wasn't anything else available at the time lol
Yeah, I'm really excited about that. I am already missing a native app. The browser experience, to be fair, is really good but push notifications and small qol like being able to swipe out the sidebar will be very welcome.
Yep this is what I'm most looking forward to, the browser version works great and is really top notch but yea an app like RIF would make this place even better...also infinite scrolling
Surfboard has been pretty awesome so far (if you're on iOS)! Been enjoying the UI and gesture support
Another Apollo exodus survivor using Surfboard for all of a few minutes. Seems pretty decent. Registered this account in 2019 and hoped I wouldnāt need it. Here we are.
Same here
Thanks for the shoutout š Stumbling upon this in the wild put a smile on my face
How are they scraping data for the app?
Hi, Surfboard dev here š
Open any Tildes page in your browser and inspect the source. Now you have all the data ! Thatās how the app gets it too ;)
So it's all based on scraping? Any idea if Tildes is considering an actual API?
Thereās a thread about the API: https://tildes.net/~tildes/15y3/are_there_any_plans_to_publish_an_official_api
In short, thereās an accepted issue in Tildesās issue tracker since around 3 years ago, but itās a lot of work.
Yes, all scraping :( I wish there was an API!
Itās mentioned here in the docs but I havenāt seen any concrete details. I asked about it here but didnāt get an answer yet
Where can I find more details about that app? Will it be available for iOS?
Thereās a beta iOS app called surfboard you might like
e: fixed link
Just a heads up, your link formatting is backwards so the caption doesnāt work.
It should be:
[Caption](Link)
but you have[Link](Caption)
I don't know if he is making RIF for iOS, there are a few devs making apps for tildes for iOS though, RIF was only android, so I don't think the 3 cheers for tildes app will be ios/android.
It's going to be for Android and iOS:
https://tildes.net/~tildes/157v/im_working_on_a_mobile_app_for_tildes_three_cheers_for_tildes
cc: @hodorhodor
O that's awesome, I'm all android but good to see it'll be on both ecosystems.
I'm definitely looking forward to that! Hope it has the same look and feel as RIF
I'm going to leave it installed. I just saw the Relay for reddit guy is going to continue operating on a subscription model hopefully talklittle sees that or talks to him and follows suit. Or we get a app from RIF for tildes.
I keep clicking on rif whenever I pick up my phone out of habit and getting a 429 error, sucks
Iām leaving Apollo app installed because Christian said people getting refunds would have to manually reject them. If you delete the app, it will automatically refund you.
I got the prompt to reject the refund a few days ago. Iām surprised you havenāt gotten it. There was a Reddit thread full of shills talking about how he sucked for giving the option, despite many people requesting it in the Apollo sub.
Iām leaving Apollo installed because apparently the pixel pal still works. Least I can hang into that.
This is happening. talklittle is working on a Tildes app already.
As someone who didn't use any of these third party apps, do you all think having a Tildes version of RIF will really do anything because of how few people are on this site and even fewer of those are contributing?
Yes, for sure. I mostly use Tildes on my computer, but I have a browser open on my phone as well. It'd just make it easier to use on phones. I'm not always on my computer, but I almost always have my phone
More than anything, it's visibility. So I see no downside unless like, it suddenly attracts a hoarde of nazis. Even then, they'd need to be invited so that limits potential damage from submissions.
For other upsides:
Yeah, I have been using Relay for a long time now. Currently, it is still working just fine, I'll keep using it until it finally requires me to pay or shuts down. If the price is right, I might still pay for relay, but only if the remaining users continue to put up good content in the communities I follow.
Either way, I am sure I'll find a good place for doom scrolling. Hopefully Tildes! :)
I for one will leave reddit is fun installed. For one it'll serve as a nostalgic reminder of the good times when I used the old reddit - a platform not yet entirely governed by corporate greed. Also I'll probably check from time to time if any push notifications by talklittle regarding new projects appear.
I'm using RIF built-in web browser to use Tildes! RIF is still going strong!
I accessed it from the announcement in TalkLittle webpage, where he mentions he's making a Tildes app, and has a link to the site. I just thought it was hilarious.
Edit: Settings > About > View developer announcements > Visit Link > Tildes link.
Honestly, that is how I learned about Tildes as well. I thought I might as well check it out. As soon as the page loaded I knew this was the replacement I have been looking for. Familiar enough to feel comfortable, but fresh and easy to use.
I'm thinking my first comment here would be fitting to be on this post. RIP RIF. FK the admin of Reddit.
I hope I can re-buy Tildes Is Fun.
He's named it "Three Cheers for Tildes"!
Lucky. I used Apollo and that dev said heās just not up to doing it all over again from scratch. I would love to see him do an app for this place.
Surfboard is supposed to be pretty similar to Apollo with the iOS design language. Might be worth giving a shot!
https://tildes.net/~tildes/174c/introducing_surfboard_for_tildes
But we need the Tildes is Fun is Fun version of Tildes.
I'm kinda shocked at how easy tildes is to use in just a mobile browser. If an app could come along with slightly more accessible vote/reply buttons I'm all in
Tildes needs an API first. Lemmy has boost now though.
Jerboa for Android seems not too bad. (For lemmy, that is.)
Using connect for lemmy until Lemmy.world is updated. It's OK. Prefer jerboa though.
Is there an issue for this on gitlab?
And so it begins.
You're at Tildes now...
Stay a while, and listen.
Man, I wish I could afford D4... I'm saving up!
Sorry, what is D4?
Diablo 4.
There's an iconic character in the franchise named Deckard Cain who always says 'stay a while and listen'.
Goodbye RIF, was the most used app on my phone for years.
Hello Tildes! Let's build a great community together!
Goodbye RIF. I was still accessing Reddit through the app this whole time. Today, I went to it out of habit and it couldn't load.
It felt like the end of an era.
Isn't the problem though that mainstream reddit is a hot turd but it afforded space for a lot of smaller groups to find succour
It was a great bridge between established forums and niche groups. Old school forums were great, but they are really hard to start up and market, especially for small hobbies.
BaconReader is out too. I was using until a few minutes ago.
For me too :( So long BR.
BaconReader was one of, if not the first android app I ever paid for. Guess I won't be using Reddit on my phone anymore.
Thank you @talklittle for years of an amazing app. Bought it 9 years ago, and this app IS(was) Reddit for me.
Thank you @talklittle! RIF was my first Reddit app, wouldn't have gotten as into the platform as I did without it!
It was wild to see it suddenly just stop working after 11+ years of daily use. Even weirder that it stopped working at like 6pm my time.
Yep, same. Error 429, just out of nowhere. Heartbreaking.
23:00 UTC I can confirm (Apollo)
Same here. I knew it was going to happen but it was still heartbreaking
Good bye, RiF! š«”š„² Hello, Tildes.
Fucking huge F, I just deleted it myself. If the ReVanced team doesn't come up with a good patch for the official Reddit up, I really can't picture myself going back to that site at all. On the plus side I read that the RIF developer is working on a Tildes app, very hopeful about that.
Revanced might disable ads, but the app will still spy on you.
Revanced should also be able to roll out patches that disable any sort of client behavior, no? Can't do anything about what the server does with your requests but that was true of 3PA too.
Man, just talked about RIF in past tense for the first time. Reddit was always imperfect but for a time it was at least good. This is a sad day.
It can, but if you don't have source code you kind of work in the dark, it is easy to tell when you patched it up and the ad is not showing up, but a bit harder to control what information the app is sending, especially as now all communication is encrypted.
Patches for Boost and Sync have been published already. I can't link them here, so just Google it and you shall find the one respite still available.
You'll also need to use your own API key, but there's an accompanying tutorial so you'll be fine.
I'm hoping for a patch for one of the third party apps that lets you put in your own api key. I downloaded red reader, but it's not nearly as nice an experience as Relay.
There's a patch for Boost and Sync that let you use your own API key. There's a tutorial somewhere on how to do it.
Relay is still working. The developer is paying for the API costs right now while working on implementing a subscription model.
Sync is down.
Got a notification from sync that said something like "Thank you for everything. It's been one hell of a ride".
Sync for Lemmy is in development. I haven't dug into Lemmy yet, but I'll be setting it up once Sync is ready for it.
For those curious on What's Next from the developer.
Thanks for the link. It is nice to know that new communities will have the support of some fantastic devs. RIF was my preferred way pf browsing and it feels strange (ly good) tp start breaking the habits of opening it up all the time during downtime.
This fucking sucks, man. I really want to leave a comment about how much better this site and others are (and they are), but it would be disingenuous to say I feel anything positive about this right now. I'm gonna try to avoid bringing a negative energy into my comments in the future, but I gotta express my feelings about this right now.
Thanks for the memories, @talklittle. Can't wait to buy the next app you make.
He's making" Three Cheers for Tildes"!
It'll be interesting to see what the effect will be on traffic, it at all. This one used for the blackout seems like it's still being updated so curious to see if there's any discernible change at ~7pm EST.
https://blackout.photon-reddit.com/
Huh, I mod a 50k+ sub that's been blacked out since immediately after the AMA and it's not on the list. I wonder if that's why I never got the nastygram from the admins?
If you're sub was one that the admins couldn't put ads on they didn't care.
This was a Cute Animals type sub, so completely ad friendly. Not super high traffic but got 2-3 posts a day with a few hundred votes (for reference it was r/moonmoon)
My tiny 2.4k sub was blacked out since the 12th, isn't on that list either and somehow got that first automated nastygram. (I made it public again just before I removed myself as mod a couple of hours ago.)
I wonder how that will infer comments/posts now the API is paid? I have my doubts as to whether it will be able to keep within the API limits and still show accurate data
Oh, they'll finally kill old.reddit.com soon, I bet.
Just realized there's another discussion happening that's Apollo-specific, and someone else has noted the same crashing behavior in there.
https://mastodon.social/@christianselig/110635856662952525
Wait, so instead of allowing Christian to decommission his API key at midnight, Reddit nuked it early without warning? Talk about letting the door hit him on the way out. What petty jerks.
Ugh that is so terrible of reddit. Just had to have the last word, didnāt they. Jerks.
I feel silly for thinking I'd be able to access RiF until midnight my time, (in hindsight of course it wasn't going to happen that way). But I started getting 429d about an hour ago and my first thought was, "I thought I had a little more time, š". Fuck spez for sure, but I'm grateful for the time RiF allowed me to have. 13 years total. Very bittersweet but I'm looking forward to the future of Tildes!
I thought we'd at least get it until midnight EST. The end of the month really snuck up on me and it wasn't until late last night that I realized I only had about 24 hours to pop in and see what's happening. Glad I got a few more AITA drama stories in lol
Been using RIF for approximately 10 years, lurking Reddit for longer. Almost got emotional when it 429'ed. Was a fun ride.
Eleven years for me. I did get emotional.
429. Please try again later :(
16 years, 3 accounts, mod of several major subs and over a million combined karma.
I feel heartbreak and loss. It's been my constant companion.
Yea it really is grief.
I keep opening my phone and clicking on the link and remember nothing is there.
I ended up adding a Tildes chrome link to my home screen.
I have too :(
Currently sitting at my PC watching Power Delete Suite edit/delete all my account history. Here's a guide if anyone else wants to clear out their account, I'm not sure if it'll work after the API changes go into effect tomorrow or not.
https://www.neowin.net/guides/the-power-delete-suite-can-help-you-scrub-your-reddit-posts-and-comments-in-minutes/
That tool doesn't get it all - I ran it several times plus shreddit.com a few times, and there's still stuff. Here's what I did to find and delete much more.
I wish I had thought to overwrite my comments with, "Thanks to the redditor who shared that critical info - promise you'll never delete it, because I couldn't find it anywhere else!" You know, just to increase the aggravation for future googlers....
RIP RIF.

It was fun while it lasted, even though reddit has been going downhill for years, especially since around 2016ish.
Jul 1 00:00 GMT, makes sense as a time to expire the key. RIP RIF, I wasted many hours with you over the years!
I was using the app at 6:45 PM EST when it stopped working. I was surprised, but at least I can I was there at the end.
So long RiF. You will be missed! o7
I was reading about the Supreme Court determining discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation was legal.
What a load of crock...but damn, if it isn't apt.
Rip. Feels very odd my muscle memory clicking on my phone but it not opening
Same :'(
First post for me.
The end of an era. š„
Well, earlier than I thought but here we are. Good bye, RiF. You served me well for many many years.
Sad day to see it. I've been using RIF for 10 years. I was looking for an email to contact them with (to say thanks) and found my review from 2014... Asking for help to uninstall it because I spent so many hours on it!
RIP RIF, used it almost as long as it was in the app store.
It was fun while it lasted.
Just deleted it with a heavy heart. Thank you whoever invited me here!
I'm keeping it. I can't get rid of it. It's too old a friend.
F......
I am sad :(
And a little relieved?
And talklittle is making an app for tildes, and one for lemmy, so also excited :)
Thanks for everything, RIF! I will miss you.
I bought the paid version of RIF around 12 years ago. Been using it forever. Think I even paid for it more than once because I loved it so much. Thanks for all you did keeping the app going all these years, @talklittle.
Just deleted Apollo. I though I had more time.
Same. Iām just glad I had time to refuse a refund and to pay for/download the wallpapers. RIP Apollo
Yup. It went down mid-day...
I hoped this day would never come.
End of an era and end of actively using Reddit for me. It was good while it lasted.
I'm glad that I have found Tildes - thanks to @OBLIVIATER for mentioning it and thanks to @Deimos for buildng the site.
Yep I called it out on SubredditDrama and my comments quickly were subject to a co-ordinated bury and mocking. I understand that the mods folding is a point of deserved ridicule, but this wasn't a bunch of "lol jannies do it for free" posts. This was a co-ordinated movement. Like busting a union.
Rest in Peace, my favorite reddit app.
Sad day. I don't even know how to use the internet without RIF.
Deleting the Apollo app was actually quite sad. I stopped using Reddit for years until a day of casual browsing led me to the Apollo app announcement. I used Power Delete to scrub my Reddit account and Iām never looking back.
Waiting on the App from TalkLittle before I dive into Tildes properly as I always do my scrolling on my phone.
I also do.my scrolling on the phone and I like the web version. It is properly lightweight and not bloated like some apps could do. All the space is used by the site, no whitespace left.
Have you tried the mobile browser interface? It's actually really well put together. The main things it's missing are side swiping and a small handful of other QOL features. Coming from RIF, the browser experience is remarkably similar.
I donāt think you need an app for Tildes, at least not in its current state. The mobile website works fine and is easy to navigate. I could see a fancier UI being needed if it ever exploded and a bunch of new groups were created but it doesnāt have crazy traffic right now.
I'm interested to see if there will be any discernable drop in traffic. I bailed a few weeks ago during the blackout and uninstalled RIF at the beginning, but saw lots of comments from people saying that they'd stop using it once their app wasn't available anymore.
I certainly hope so, since Apollo closed down I have tried opening it by habit around 5 times already this morning. I donāt use the Reddit app and I donāt plan to do so. I will still use old Reddit on PC, but like others, it was 99% on mobile.
I mean, I'm done. I spent <1% of my time on desktop...maybe it'll increase by a factor of 5 or so? But either way, it's way down from where it was - a 95% drop from me is not unlikely.
I was actually planning on using it from my desktop on occasion. But the behavior of the CEO was enough to turn me away from the whole thing for good.
I have a few communities I want to check on from time to time...but yeah, not a lot.
This is how I feel too - Iām not super invested in the drama one way or the other but I only liked Reddit in Apollo, the official app isnāt any good, so now I just donāt see myself using it much unless Iām on my desktop.
And these days I spend all day at work on a computer, after work I try to avoid a keyboard haha. Only get on my personal desktop on the weekends sometimesā¦
I just got the same death message for bacon reader.
This got me thinking of all the Reddit apps I've tried over the years on both Android and iOS. Alien Blue, Reddit is Fun, Relay, Antenna, Apollo, and a bunch more in between. I'll likely still browse old.reddit on desktop out of habit but on the bright side I'll be spending way more time on tildes.
Narwhal still works. The devs struck a deal for a grace period until they release the 2nd version of the app that will require a paid subscription to access the API. No sexually explicit content of course but itās the only viable alternative at the moment.
I don't expect it working out too great for the narwhal team in the long term.
Missed opportunity to say "so long, and thanks for all the bacon".
I guess I should be glad there's still third party option available, but it feels a bit... scabby. But I know isn't fair to the devs of the apps that decided to work with Reddit's new API policy. The whole thing just sucks.
This confirms my exit from the site. The only activity they'll get from me is if they're the only choice on a Google search.
It's been fun. Informative. I've changed as a person since I started using Reddit - changed into somebody more aware. That awareness led me to this.
You know, I decided to just join the party this time and have deleted both of my reddit accounts now. Even the one I was considering keeping for limited purposes. I'm done. Why not do it on June 30th as many of the apps sunset.
If I need to search it and get an answer or something via a search engine, fine, but I'm done having any kind of presence there.
Really gonna miss RIF, couldn't tell you how many hours I spent browsing it. Think I'm gonna start reading books again to try fill the void.
Well at least my pixel pal in Apollo still works.
I'm pretty sad about all this. 13 years on Reddit, then they do this and I just feel like I can't stay.
I spent a few days trying to figure out how to get the python script that lets you download the data from your account, but just couldn't figure it out. I assume it wont work after the api changes, but I don't know. Time to delete my account, I guess. Sad.
To download your Reddit account data, use the request form: https://www.reddit.com/settings/data-request
It might take a few weeks though as I've heard they're backlogged.
GDPR and CCPA/CPRA requests give you your full data. An "Other" request probably gives less data, but I haven't confirmed.
Yeah, that's the method I'll use now, I just know it's not great and it is just a big text file. The python tool I was trying to use creates a database of your comments.
I appreciate the info, though.
They're CSV files, and the data is separated out by type of data (e.g., posts voted, comments voted, etc.).
It's pretty much the only way you'll be able to get everything, given the limitations of 1,000 items in any given endpoint.
Definitely. At this point, with me failing to pull it all with the 3rd party tool, my only options to save my data is to use the one Reddit offers. I'm bummed I missed the window, because the alternative is much better, but I was legit grieving and avoidant of putting more hours into a process that was already not working for me, while also having to hover around Reddit and be bummed out. Just trying to be understanding with myself about why things turned out this way.
Reddit Relay on android is still alive, developer plans to move to a subscription model, but so far it works just like yesterday.
https://old.reddit.com/r/RelayForReddit/comments/14n876v/update_relay_will_continue_to_operate_from_july/
Saw the same this morning. I was curious if the app was still working, it was and I saw this post.
It's interesting that the apps that do continue seem to have gotten a grace period after all. I wonder if that had been the case without all the backlash.
Interestingly, Relay for Reddit is still online - it seems like the creator is shouldering the api costs for now - hoping people are willing to pay for the premium version.
I have already stopped browsing reddit, but was still checking the app now and then partly out of habit and partly to see if it was still working - and it never seemed to go down so I went researching. I bought the premium (no ads) version of the app years ago, so I never noticed any difference.
For anyone who is running android, Hermit Browser makes a really good "app" replacement. It'll generate a frameless webapp that has notifications built in!
I'm going to keep Sync on my phone, broken, a slap in the face each time I open the app reminding me to stop scrolling, or at least visit Tildes.
I'd never suspect Reddit would so actively help me use Reddit less.
RIP in Peace RIF
It was the primary way I'd browse the site, down to just using old when I view something on desktop now untill that eventually gets taken away.
Weird that Boost for Reddit still works.
I didn't say that.
I am in the minority that used Slide. It is down as well. Today finally deleted all my posts and comments of the last 7 years and said goodbye and goodluck.
RIP Reddit.
