*1 - Ok so maybe it actually is my fault.
It was fine when I could glance down to the bottom of the page. But my epub copy of the sequel is putting all the footnotes at the end of the chapter. So I'm seeing them long after I forgot the context for them. I'm not sure how an audio book would handle them, but it sounds like it's just reading them right away.

I haven't read the second book yet, but I get the feeling that the world or the whole time loop situation is going to be revealed to be more constructed or planned.
The system where humans use magic crystals for spells, while wilders eat them for stats, was an interesting mechanic. Humans can perform short term feats the other can't, but it looks like they always lose the war of attrition to the passive buffs from the other side.

Outside of the bit at the beginning we mostly avoid the usual trial and error thats common in these stories. While the protagonist has the benefit of knowledge gained in previous loops, the fact that everything is new territory for her makes this feel quite different.

In the future, space ships keep a security specialist frozen on board in case of pirate hijacking. That's you. Each level is a different ship. You thaw out, pirates have already taken everything over and you need to get the ship back under control.
However you seldom have any sort of real weapons. Instead you'll do things like leave banana peels on the floor, use sparks from damaged electronics to ignite flammable gases or suck the pirates out of airlocks.
The interaction between different objects and systems on the ship is pretty sophisticated. It's pretty satisfying when you do something like damage a fuel line to leak explosive gas, turn on a radio to lure a pirate towards it, then rip out some wiring to ignite an explosion.
The whole thing starts to feel like a cross between Loony Toons and Die Hard.

Its always weird when someone shows up in experience point world but they also dont know what video games are.
I'd also really recommend Operation Bounce House, a stand alone book by the same author. It definitely follows some similar themes (capitalism commodifing violence as entertainment) but without most of the really bizarre elements that DCC has.

While other players get to play with other cooperative people.
But it took a lot of the guess work out of the game. The thing that really attracted me to the game was this idea that anyone might turn on you and you'd always be weighing the risk of fighting another player vs nearby ARC while being worried they might just shoot you in the back.
You had those moments where you'd have the drop on someone and have to decide if you were going to take advantage of them. Or those times you were completely screwed but then were saved by a kind stranger.
Once everyone realized there was a cosmic nanny watching everything you did, it took a lot of the magic out of it. Suddenly that guy wasnt helping me spontaneously. Hes just didn't think taking my stuff was worth ending up in a gutter lobby for the next few games. When I avoid shooting a guy in the back for his loot, its not because of my innate humanity, but because its actually a better investment to not get black marks on my record.

Viltrimites need to breathe, but can hold their breath for insanely long times. Conquest went into the atmosphere and exhaled right before he got choked. So even though he uses oxygen extremely efficiently, it didn't matter when he has zero air in his lungs.

People will toe the line when following the rules is better than dying. But now theyre breaking into people's houses, attacking citizens and non citizens alike, and killing more and more people.
If being a citizen doesnt keep you safe, staying in your home doesnt keep you safe, and peacefully getting arrested doesnt keep you safe, people are going to go with whatever other option they have.

Even as a child. How could he really think that was a good use of the town's money.
Of course it all came out later that it was a scam. The guy was getting kickbacks from a friend's business or something. He wasn't an idiot that didn't understand the value of money. He was just stealing it.
