How much my daughter will be burdened by student loans. We have never been in a financial spot to be able to help with tuition, and now we are in that area of 'we make too much salary for financial aid, but the financial aid doesn't take into account the years of consumer debt we now have to crawl out from under.'

She's been a straight A student since pre-K, finished in the top 10% of her class at what is arguably the #2 public school in the state, and has knocked out enough AP and dual credit classes already to be classified as a 4th semester college student before her freshman year starts in a month...

But, perhaps naively, we misjudged how much merit scholarships would materialize (answer: none), and I really, really feel for her knowing that she's about to sign up for 20+ years of pain to pursue her dreams, and currently there's not much I can do about it.

It also really doesn't help that grandma has the full tuition amount several times over just sitting in an account, but won't use it to help "because it wouldn't be fair to the other grandchildren".

In addition to the excellent advice u/DrEvergreen gives, instead of trying to plan every single day for the group, I would recommend planning days at location, with "we'll meet up at XX for brunch, then YY for dinner at [times], so that individuals/small groups have increased flexibility to plan their own one off adventures, but still remain part of the larger group for key times.

It came from combining the words for man/husband and woman/wife in the military phrasebook for some language I can't remember I was issued on my way to Afghanistan in 2003. I thought it was Pashto, but looking into it over the years, I don't think that's correct. (it is possible that the phrasebook was wrong, or it was for a different language, but I have no clue anymore).

It's been my username on just about everything since I got back from Afghanistan.

The time when I am in the most zen flow state of mind is when there is expanding chaos around me. I run towards car wrecks, I've ran towards gun fire. It's become a joke with my wife now that she knows if we're out somewhere and some shit goes down, I'm heading towards it to help. I keep a full trauma bag in my car, my car and my wifes car both have strap cutters and tourniquets...

I spent a bit over 4 years as a infantryman paratrooper, and then became a respiratory therapist, starting my medical career in a very busy burn unit. Doing that, working in hyper critical care for a decade, taught me that I prefer to be dealing with the worst situations rather than the easy ones. Give me someone actively trying to die and let me get to work to try and fix them.

I've also been involved in the 2014 Fort Hood active shooter, which was intense.

I also used to reached advanced cardiac life support classes, and I would start each one by telling the class the most important thing to do when arriving in the room of someone in cardiac arrest is to take a deep breath. That slight pause does wonders to focus the mind and actions, and if that slight pause was the difference in saving them or not, you weren't saving them anyway.

I'm hoping that medical twitter will move there in some flavor - I follow a lot of medtwitter, and they are the only reason I still have a twitter account (well, that and it is still the best way to shame company's customer service into responding, although I imagine that feature will wane very fast).

When I was in the Army I won a few 'soldier of the quarter' type competition things.

I was a winner for the Deparment of Defense's hot technologies contest for a thing I co-invented. The Army patented it, I get a nominal check every year since it was licensed out by a company.

I won a 'best presentation by a respiratory therapist' thing at a scientific conference.

I've been a co-author on other works that have one 'best #thing' at other scientific conferences.

Money wise, over my lifetime I think I've won like $70 on lottery tickets.

edit - not really winning, but I had several cans of monster that had somehow gone bad, and when I reached out, to compensate Monster sent me about 100 vouchers for free cans, so it felt like I won.

2nd edit - My wife's friend once won a 'bring 100 of your closest friends' to a local Six Flags. Friend lives 5 hours away, so we got to invite everyone we knew, and it was just our little crew in the entire park. Ruined normal visits to Six Flags for like a decade.

A grilled corn salad. Every time I've made it, everyone at the gathering has asked for the recipe. I've made it just before having to leave for the party, but it really shines if you let it sit and allow flavors to develop for a day or so.

    1 pint grape tomatoes, sliced
    1 ripe avocado, diced
2 ears of fresh sweet corn, grilled
    1 cucumber, diced
    2 tbsp fresh cilantro, chopped
    Juice of 1 lime

    Dressing
    Juice of 2 limes
    3 tbsp olive oil/avacado oil
    1 tbsp honey
Salt and fresh cracked pepper, to taste
    3 cloves garlic, minced
    1 tsp cayenne pepper
    Dash of cumin

Cut the corn off the cob then scrape the cob with the back of your knife to get the juices.
Set aside and let cool. Once cool, gently mix with other vegetables. Mix in lime juice
from 1 lime to prevent browning of the avacado.
Whisk dressing ingredients together, reserve until serving then drizzle over.

I will also jump on the pocket casts train. It's been my go to for so long I can't even remember what I used to use. I really like the ability to adjust playback effects, boost audio, trim silence, etc., and the auto trim xx seconds feature is great if you have a show that always starts or ends (or both) with the same ad plays, you can just set the player to automatically skip ahead or end early.

My office mate bought some on my recommendation, and then went through half a dozen brands/models before he gave up, because all bone conduction stuff gave him wicked headaches.

Seems like it might be a rare thing, but something to maybe be aware of.
