What weird food combo did you not realise was weird?

I was pretty shocked when my partner and my best friend both told me that apparently the cheese and tuna omelettes my family has been eating for years aren't normal! I also know a guy at work who likes to eat spaghetti with either mayonnaise or gravy. What strange concoctions have you been eating?

I don't think it's weird, but then again I also like to scoop slurpees (specifically plain ol' Coke ones) up with Cheetos puffs in the same manner, so maybe I'm just a sucker for an edible utensil.

I've seen this a few times so I might give it a shot. Sugar and salt are both flavor enhancers and potato is pretty neutral. So you've got the contrasts of hot and cold, salty and sweet, smooth and crispy; all on the bed of rich chocolate or vanilla. Screw it, I'm getting a sundae with a side of fries now.

Cereal and warm milk. I grew up eating a lot of hot porridge so I figured that its the same for cereal. I managed to keep this disgusting food choice a secret until I made breakfast for some roommates. They were disturbed, appalled and a little hurtful about the whole thing. They also agreed that it was a superior choice but wouldn't do it because its just too weird. to me, it helps infuse flavor into the milk and makes it feel far more hearty than sad sugar cardboard in cold cow juice.

Doesn't the warm milk turn the cereal soggy quicker? I mean, I'm all for porridge (or other hot foods) for breakfast, but what I like about cereal is the cold dairy (milk or yoghurt etc.) with crispy cereal – eaten fairly quickly before it has time to get soggy.

As a side note, I was once served cornflake ice-cream where the cornflakes had been steeped in the cream used, and it was delicious and tasted exactly like it should.

And this is why people who pour milk over cereal are wrong. The other way around. Milk first, cereal after. And then you eat the most-soaked cereal first. All of it can be crispy if you actually care.

Mayo is crazy pants, but brown gravy is just one of the normal default options for spaghetti in HK restaurants. It could be a mushroom based sauce or caramelized onion or black pepper, but it's basically just brown sauce. The othe usual optioms are white or red. Sometimes yellow for curry or (HK style) Portugese sauce is also offered but more rare. Is that not okay?

Same cuisine, 鴛鴦 Yuen yeung is coffee mixed with milk tea. I've learned most people would not mix coffee with tea?! But chocolate is totally normal for folks apparently.

Speaking of chocolate, chocolate banana is not a common combo outside of Japan, I guess?

    Edit:

I totally forgot the MOST common way to eat pasta at a HK Cafe!! In clear broth. Broth macaroni with bits of ham. Completely normal staple. If the breakfast menu says macaroni without elaboration, it's going to come in broth.

Most HKer local cuisine that isn't Cantonese in origin came about as a folk knock off versions of the fancier stuff we see the visitors eating :) we have derivative curry (way less spicy and let's make it glow yellow), derivative milk tea (way milkier!), derivative steak (who has time to cook and eat? Make it 5mm thick and get out the door already!), derivative pastel de Nata (get rid of the cinnamon and make it less sweet and flakier)

so it's entirely possible it's not even convergent and just straight up "permanently borrowed" 😂

She asked why I was looking her like I'd just had my cookie stolen and I said about this weird combo she was making. She laughed and said it was really common in Oz and was simply called "Fairy Bread" and was normal at kids parties.

I can get behind this. I don't love sour cream, and usually sub high-fat yoghourt, including with nachos. Honestly, I'll probably try your salsa + cottage cheese combo as nacho dip eventually.

I hear what you're saying about it being "a cheeseburger without the meat" but that meat adds a significant flavor and texture to the overall sandwich. That's like saying a peanut butter sandwich is just a pbj with no j. It is technically the truth but in practice, very different.

That being said... I'd like to try it. Sounds interesting

My Mom always made grilled cheese with spicy brown mustard inside. My wife thinks it's sacrilegious so whenever she makes grilled cheese for us I just put mustard on the side for dipping. The cheesy mustard combo is so good.

Depends on where in the us. The two most common I know is just like a bowl of soup or in a bread bowl. Or on a hot dog (different though then the type you eat as a soup). In the Midwest apparently on spaghetti is common (it tastes like the chili they use for hot dogs). I think that is weird lol.

I just figured my step mom did it to make my dad happy (he is from the philipinnes and he would insist on rice with every meal when I was a kid). Never thought about it until my husband commented but then realized I didn’t see it served on rice except for when I or my stepmom made it so I assumed it was just something she did for my dad. So interesting it is normal in the us (and my stepmom is not from the UK).

In my opinion it's kinda gross. Chili is very varied here though (other than that type). You have some that uses big cubes of meat, mine uses ground beef, controversy over whether it having beans is really chili (chili cook offs in general ban beans but mine has beans). The chili on hot dogs is usually ground beef and some sort of sauce and always has the same type taste (a lot of times you can just buy the stuff I think in a can to put over your hot dog). I don't particularly like it (so I was disappointed whne I finally got to try midwestern chili cause I was curious about this over spaghetti thing and it was basically like hot dog chili).

Edit - during my very brief stint working at McDonalds in the 90s, I also started wrapping fresh nuggets in half a slice of american cheese, and it's something I still do in my 40s now.

Someone else! A chef family friend introduced it to us and it became the main way to serve fresh strawberries in our house for years. The tang of the sour cream helps balance the sweet and creamy flavors. Plus it’s super easy to adjust the brown sugar on the fly depending on how ripe the berries are and how sweet each person likes theirs.

I feel validated! We like to add 3 beaten and seasoned eggs to a pan, add a tin of tuna in there, then when it's almost done put a bunch of grated cheddar cheese on top and throw it under the grill so the cheese gets all melty and bubbly. My friend turned me on to this at a time when I thought cottage cheese looked, smelled and tasted like baby spit up. He convinced me to try it and I never looked back.

It’s been my go to lunch for the past 6 years and is delicious with just plain rice and cottage cheese or with soy sauce for a salty kick. Lately I’ve been putting spicy chili crisp with it. The cold creamy cottage cheese juxtaposed against the warm spicy rice is a killer combo.

Cream cheese, pickapeppa sauce, and fritos

My dad would eat this sometimes and eventually I decided to try it. It doesn't look great, pickapeppa is a deep brown sauce and you just pour it on a block of cream cheese. It tastes amazing though. The important thing is to use "normal" cream cheese, no reduced fat versions or flavored kinds. They taste significantly different (reduced fat with pickapeppa tastes bad to me, even).

Pickapeppa is intended as a steak sauce and for that it is very good, but this was what I always used it for and still do now. I've never met folks besides my dad who did it, but everybody I've introduced it to very much liked it.

Edit - I remembered, I have actually encountered the tuna cheese omelet before. A coworker brought it for a meal that day and microwaved it, that's how I found out it had tuna in it. Definitely not a good impression, but for what it's worth you are not alone lol.

We don’t have grits where I live, but I might give them a try. They look delicious in photos.

I used to eat buttered whitebread dipped in ketchup. Called ketchup sandwiches. It wasn't until college that I learned it was my grandpa's great depression food. I still love it!

That's pretty much a culinary technique called maceration :) I do this with strawberries and sugar anytime I'm making a cream cake or eton mess - guarantees good results!

Slice of bread with sour cream and raspberry/strawberry jam. I started doing this as an unseasonal replacement of white bread with sour cream, strawberries and a sprinkle of sugar which my dad used to make when I was a kid.

Bread with white cheese and jam.
Bread with brown cheese and cucumber. (Or jam)

I never realized how much people hate salty/salmiak liquorice outside Scandinavia/Netherlands. It's flavored with ammonium chloride and people absolutely hate it in Australia. I -love- it and miss it dearly.

Also, I'll sprinkle peanuts on almost anything because it's delicious.

I grew up with peanut butter and cheese sandwiches. Didn't think about it as weird at all until I became an adult.
