I just made myself an eggplant, mozzarella, and tomato toast for dinner. It was nothing fancy but maybe it might inspire new ideas for you? Anyway, I sliced an eggplant lengthwise into thin slices and fried them in the frying pan with a bit of olive oil. You can zap them in the microwave for a minute or so beforehand to shorten frying time. You can also bake them in the oven or grill them instead if that’s easier. I then layered the eggplant, sliced mozzarella, and sliced tomatoes on a nice thick piece of toast. I topped it with some pesto and salt, and it was pretty amazing. -

We don’t have grits where I live, but I might give them a try. They look delicious in photos. -

Nekobambam I think it’s becoming more accepted now, but savory oatmeal. I eat it like congee or risotto. It’s easy, filling, and delicious. Nekobambam I stopped using Reddit for the 48 hours was it? of the protest. It was a lot harder than I thought it would be. In addition to missing all the cat subs and my hobby subs, it was just the general...I stopped using Reddit for the 48 hours was it? of the protest. It was a lot harder than I thought it would be. In addition to missing all the cat subs and my hobby subs, it was just the general sense of being a part of a community, especially since I live in a non-English speaking country and am socially isolated in real life. But the extreme difficulty in stopping indicates addiction and, honestly, I spend more time there than is healthy. Someone on Reddit kindly gave me an invite to here, and since I now have a new place to hang out, I decided it was time to let go. I gave myself til the end of the month and got my fill of Reddit to the point where I was beginning to hate humanity. I just deleted the app literally a few minutes ago and am feeling a bit like I did after I had my last cigarette. Things may get a bit bumpy for me for a while, but here’s to better overall health and productivity.

Throw glass noodles in a pot of hot water to soften. Julienne/chop/wash & drain vegetables like carrots, bell peppers, Chinese chives, bok choy, mung bean sprouts. Make stir-fry sauce with sweet chili sauce, peanut butter, soy sauce, vinegar, etc. Stir-fry vegetables and a block of tofu in a frying pan with a bit of oil. Chop tofu into cubes with a spatula as you stir-fry. When veggies are mostly done, add reconstituted glass noodles into frying pan. Stir in sauce. Add a bit of water if too dry and let the noodles soak in the sauce a bit. Turn off heat and serve. For best results, add the bean sprouts and Chinese chives, which require less cooking, later with the glass noodles.
I often use glass noodles since they reconstitute pretty quickly, but you can substitute with rice noodles, soba noodles, udon noodles, etc. You can also play around with the sauce. I like a simple ponzu and sesame oil sauce with stir-fried soba noodles. Also, miso can be a nice replacement for peanut butter.

The primary reasons were the hot, humid...According to a bit of research I just did, taking shoes off indoors was customary in Japan even back in the Yayoi period, which was from 300 BC to 250 AD.
The primary reasons were the hot, humid climate, housing design, and spiritual beliefs. Traditionally, houses were built with raised foundations to allow air flow between the floor and the ground. People slept and sat directly on the floor. So removing shoes was a way to keep the floor clean. Also, the raised foundation formed a clear boundary between ‘inside’ and ‘outside’. It was believed that gods reside inside the house. To bring in impurities from the lower outside world into the elevated sacred space inside the house would offend the gods.
In modern-day Japan, restaurants that have zashiki-style seating or sunken-floor-style seating where customers are seated on the floor require shoes to be removed for both hygiene and comfort (I get that, to people of other cultures, it might seem less hygienic and more uncomfortable to be eating on the floor barefoot). Hygiene is also why dentists might require removal of shoes, since the patient’s shoes would rest on the chair in the reclined position. I’m guessing both comfort and hygiene for my therapist’s office since they have a play room for children and kids tend to play sitting on the floor. As for my stained glass workshop, this is where tradition trumps logic and safety. It’s held in a traditionally constructed former residence with a raised foundation so outdoor shoes are an absolute no-no, even if you end up with splinters of glass in your feet (slippers can only do so much).

In the past couple of months I’ve taken off my shoes off at a temple, a restaurant, my dentist’s office, my therapist’s office, and the stained glass workshop I go to. It’s a bit of a hassle in the summer when I’m wearing sandals with bare feet because I need to carry socks with me (since it’s improper and a bit gross to wear communal slippers on bare feet).

Nekobambam I’m one of those people who’ll play a single album on a loop for months on end and the same goes for tv. Right now, I’m in my second month of Buffy the Vampire Slayer on repeat. Before that was about eight months of Bones. Before that was a couple of years of Lucifer. I also do an annual rewatch of Grey’s Anatomy which I feel I’ve finally outgrown. Other shows I watch repeatedly with less frequency are New Girl, Modern Family, Brooklyn 99, and currently Ted Lasso. I watch newer shows in between when I’m in the to mood to focus. Otherwise, my on-repeat shows are mostly to keep me company while I do other stuff.

I used to pop popcorn on the stovetop, but I’d get spatters of oil all over the place and moisture-control was pretty difficult (chewy popcorn sucks). So my popcorn popper had been amazing. Easy cleanup and light, crunchy popcorn every time. I also use the popper to pre-steam vegetables in the microwave.

I also recently realized, when I went to a large bookstore that carries English-language books and flipped through a paperback copy of Stephen King’s Fairytales, the letters are absolutely microscopic and impossible to read without reading glasses. I’d gotten so used to being able to change font sizes that it never occurred to me I might ‘age out’ of reading physical books.
I miss the carelessness of youth. Going on rollercoasters without a single thought to structural integrity. Going out to drink and having no idea how I got home. Quitting a job just because, and being absolutely certain I’ll find a new and better one. Being impulsive and irresponsible with money.
