What's your favorite theme on Tildes?
I adore the available themes and it makes browsing quite pleasing to do. Currently I'm in a fight between Solarized Dark and Dracula. I'm curious though if there's a clearly preferred theme here or if people are using all kinds of stuff.
Some previous threads on themes (some are about themes in general and aren't Tildes specific):

See also this topic from 2 weeks ago: Which theme are you defaulting to?
Doh! I tried to be a good boy and search for threads before posting, but that thread is using the tag "display_themes" and not "themes". Well shucks, if folks think two weeks is too short a span for a repeat, I'll remove the post.
Fixed the tags on both to be themes.display. Hopefully that helps with searches for this kind of topic.
Yeah... I was thinking... "Didn't we just do this?"
Gruvbox Dark is my jam!!
Amen :3
I also am using Gruvbox Dark! It is quite nice since it matches my theme in KDE Plasma and Firefox, it makes the website integrate nicely within the desktop environment. Although I do also have a soft spot for Solarized Light if I want a light theme, it's really easy on the eyes and much more usable if I am outside during the day.
Yeah I like this one as well! I prefer the dark themes but the others have so much bright blue that I don't like as much.
Atom One Dark!
Yes! I tried all of the default themes, and that one's the most pleasant one to look at for longer periods of time.
Love Dark! It’s pretty much my favorite colors.
It's essentially Wild Berry Pop-Tarts® for our screens and I absolutely love it.
Same for me :)
I tried all the themes. Love Dark is my default now. The background and text colour are not that hard on the eyes as well.
For me, Dracula fits the perfect medium point of being dark, readable, but not so high contrast that it hurts my eyes to look at. That cyan text is brutal for me on some of the other dark themes.
Totally agree. I’ve found myself gravitating towards Dracula or similar across most apps that offer that degree of “theming“.
The only app I find myself not using it on is Obsidian.md - it’s just different enough that it’s distracting.
Solarized Light by a huge margin. Easy on the eyes and reminds me of old computers.
I’m Zenburning for the moment but I’m hoping for Nordtheme to be implemented https://www.nordtheme.com/
I created a Nord theme using Stylus. You can find it linked in the wiki. https://tildes.net/~tildes/wiki/customizing_tildes
Definitely trying this out when I get back home. Love the Nord theme and was looking for one for Tildes.
Thank you!
Please let me know if you have any feedback!
I wish at some point Tildes will have a custom theme option. it's easy to add new themes as per that thread. Maybe if we just request nicely.
why not make it with Stylus?
try this quick variable swap with dracula as the base
``` /* ==UserStyle== @name tildes.net - 6/30/2023, 11:47:44 AM @namespace github.com/openstyles/stylus @version 1.0.0 @description super hacky nord theme @author tomf ==/UserStyle== */ @-moz-document domain("tildes.net") { body.theme-dracula { --alert-color: #d08770; --background-input-color: #3b4252; --background-mixed-color: #4c566a; --background-primary-color: #434c5e; --background-secondary-color: #4c566a; --border-color: #5e81ac; --button-color: #88c0d0; --button-by-brightness-color: #2e3440; --button-transparent-color: ; --button-used-color: #b48ead; --error-color: #bf616a; --error-by-brightness-color: #2e3440; --foreground-extreme-color: #eceff4; --foreground-highlight-color: #e5e9f0; --foreground-mixed-color: #e5e9f0; --foreground-primary-color: #e5e9f0; --foreground-secondary-color: #5e81ac; --link-color: #88c0d0; --link-hover-color: #81a1c1; --link-visited-color: #b48ead; --stripe-mine-color: #b48ead; --stripe-target-color: #ebcb8b; --success-color: #a3be8c; --syntax-builtin-color: #88c0d0; --syntax-comment-color: #5e81ac; --syntax-constant-color: #bf616a; --syntax-keyword-color: #b48ead; --syntax-literal-color: #b48ead; --syntax-string-color: #ebcb8b; --topic-tag-nsfw-color: ; --topic-tag-nsfw-foreground-color: #bf616a; --topic-tag-nsfw-border-color: #bf616a; --topic-tag-spoiler-color: ; --topic-tag-spoiler-foreground-color: #ebcb8b; --topic-tag-spoiler-border-color: #ebcb8b; --warning-color: #ebcb8b; --warning-background-color: ; --warning-foreground-color: #ebcb8b; --background-label-exemplary-color: ; --background-label-joke-color: ; --background-label-noise-color: ; --background-label-offtopic-color: ; --background-label-malice-color: ; --comment-label-exemplary-color: #88c0d0; --comment-label-joke-color: #a3be8c; --comment-label-noise-color: #ebcb8b; --comment-label-offtopic-color: #b48ead; --comment-label-malice-color: #bf616a; --foreground-label-exemplary-color: #88c0d0; --foreground-label-joke-color: #a3be8c; --foreground-label-noise-color: #ebcb8b; --foreground-label-offtopic-color: #b48ead; --foreground-label-malice-color: #bf616a; } } ```I use White with my own theme on top. My theme isn't perfect, but it works well enough with occasional tweaks.
I'm not great with CSS. :)
Is the two columns of posts part of your custom CSS? that is really unique!
yup! You can have as many columns as you want. If you're game, you can try it out. Make sure you're set to the White theme. You'll also most likely have to update the typefaces in the settings --- https://gitlab.com/tomflint/tildes-stylus-template/-/raw/master/lighttheme.css
its a never-ending work in progress. :)
Same here except I use the mobile browser's dark theme option.
I use Digg V4 for Tildes which is my own theme. I find the default theme to be a bit too information-dense. It also hoists the comment submission box to the top of the page which I find to be particularly useful.
HA! That's hilarious.
(first post here!) I personally use Zenburn. Even though I usually prefer light themes because I'm demented or something, something about how minimal this website is means that there's just too much white space and it hurts to look at. At the same time though I find the dark themes to be too dark, and Zenburn kinda helps with being the best of both worlds.
tl;dr: it's gray.
Welcome to Tildes! I've been here 3 days haha. I basically made the site look like my darkish theme I use to code in Visual Studio.
I use Solarized Light, though I pretty much found it and haven't looked back, so I don't know what the others look like. I've never understood the preference for dark backgrounds with light text. It hurts my eyes in the same way that bright car headlights shining at me at night hurt my eyes (though on a computer screen, it's far less dangerous). So it's puzzling to me why so many people seem to prefer it.
For me, dark mode is more relaxing on the eyes especially if I'm working in low-light conditions in my room which isn't uncommon. Additionally, some of the dark themes (like Solarized, Atom Heart) don't have high contrast text.
Solarized dark is so pretty, but it's just too low contrast for me
I'm currently using Atom One Dark, probably because it resembles the dark modes I use for my IDEs.
Atom One Dark.
Admittedly, I actually didn’t try the other themes until now, Dracula is cool, but I’ll just settle on the first one that works, which is Atom One Dark.
I like the Atom One Dark. It is not to dark, nor is it to bright. I used to use Dracula theme as my default, but Atom One is a lot better in my opinion.
I'm liking Dracula. It keeps strain off of my eyes unlike reddit's default theme, but it's not dark to the point of bumming out like their dark theme either.
dracula. in my head I made a ‘bleugh’ noise
i vant to dreenk yer blerd
Maybe it's because I'm sitting in a dark room, but Black is the only one my eyes can handle.
Huh, guess I'm the only Love Light reply so far.
Pink/purple aren't usually my jam, but I permanently set my screen set to a very yellow night-mode and it softens the theme nicely.
My first preference would have been solarized dark, but it's too low-contrast.
Love Light as well, though I have a related question / feature request:
Is it possible to have Tildes switch between light and dark themes? Meaning, use a light theme when the system is on light mode and use a light theme when the system is on dark mode.
Apollo has/had this feature implemented as a toggle and it’s pretty nice.
Thanks! I searched the site but did not know about the Gitlab issue tracker.
Default light. I never got the dark mode hype. Light themes are nicer to me.
Love Dark
Solarized Light looks the best to me during the daytime and then I switch over to Love Dark in the evenings to make my browsing experience a bit more romantic and easier on the eyes. Having themes on a site like this is brilliant. I'm really grateful for its inclusion.
I love Solarized Dark.
Also, I'd like to point out until I saw this thread I thought default white was the only option. So thanks for creating this thread OP.
Rocking Zenburn myself. Closest to the mode I had on RIF.
I like Zenburn, I'm still waiting for Nord to be added to the themes however ;)
I've settled into Dracula myself. It has a cooler color palette that I prefer, it's also darker but not straight black as a background.
