While I'm surprised and disappointed, I am not as shocked as I was in November 2016.

I'll mostly just hope for the best and focus on things within my control like eating well, exercising, getting good rest, nurturing positive relationships with those around me, and keeping busy.

Hopefully we'll still have elections in 2028 and things can normalize. The pendulum feels like it has swung completely in the wrong direction, but hopefully things won't be as bad as I think.

I frequent The Verge and sometimes engage in their comments section as there's some good discourse to be found on the odd article, but I skim their headlines through an RSS reader as their site design is too "loud" to navigate peacefully.

I would probably go elsewhere for my daily dose of tech and tech-adjacent reporting if a broad paywall ever went up. As it is already, the number of affiliate link articles masquerading as deals they've surfaced just for readers is getting to be a bit too much. I've felt the screws tightening, so to speak, so this article tracks with my experience.

Agreed. I love cycling and the idea of commuting by bike or e-bike, but it's mostly something aspirational that I know I'll never feel comfortable doing in the US. Outside of moving to Utrecht, Copenhagen, Amsterdam, etc., for me, cycling will remain a recreational activity done in a park well clear of any automobiles. However, I'm sure on a long enough timescale, personal mobility vehicles like bicycles will eventually win out, but I fear we were born too early.

I think I'll stick with my old Honda for a few more years until there's enough of a supply chain and service footprint for these BEV repair costs to come down.

Seems like a solid update, though I'm finding the Control Center controls a bit harder to tap due to their smaller size on my iPhone 12 mini. Also, Calculator is slower to load, but everything else feels just as fast. I guess it's due to the Math Notes and conversion bloat? I'm glad to see expanded emoji support in iMessage tapbacks and the standalone Passwords app. Otherwise, it's been a pretty ho-hum year for the iPhone. Looking forward to finally upgrading to whatever iPhone 17 brings next year.

While it's ugly as sin, I appreciate the improved safety the giant windshield will provide through better visibility. Also, the lack of fumes. My goodness, those little mail trucks have no business polluting neighborhoods as much as they do -- fumes and noise, alike. It ain't pretty, but it's still a huge win in my book.

Muscle is the currency of health. Think of it like a battery, where you want as much muscle mass as you can get while entering old age -- since it's harder to put on and maintain then due to an increasingly shitty deamination process, so you'll have to eat more total overall protein as well compared to when you were twenty years old.

You want this muscle to prevent falls, which are essentially a death sentence/crippling past a certain age. Of the controllable variables, I'd say physical health is 45% diet (maintaining ideal body mass for your sex, height, age, and frame size with about a gram of protein per pound of lean body mass and whatever calories you require to do the stuff you wanna do), 25% cardio, 25% resistance training, and 5% cold plunges, intermittent fasting, mushroom coffee enemas, tantric meditation, tongue scraping, bee sting therapy, celebrity doctor supplements, and journaling into a fancy Moleskine notebook. Oh, sleep is probably important too.

I’m not a health expert, but it would seem that these emulsifiers are found in many processed foods which themselves would be correlated with overweight and obesity, and thus T2D.

Furthermore, T2D is a disease of over fatness, that is your fat cells are already replete with caloric energy and your normal insulin levels are no longer effective at shuttling away fatty acids into the adipocytes. And this is all regardless of “weight” as some people can churn out more fat cells as needed to soak up the caloric energy, but other populations can develop T2D just being twenty pounds overweight as they can’t easily make new adipocytes.

I don't understand why people are up-in-arms over this? Having comments visible to the right seems like that's how it always should have been. YouTube comments can be especially useful with timestamps and summaries. They've certainly come a long way and aren't completely worthless as they once were a decade or so ago. While I don't love the competing scrollbars on the right of the page, I feel like they it's a step in the right direction.

If you can manage with web apps and aren't anti-Google, I cannot recommend ChromeOS Flex enough.

I've been using it as my daily driver for the past two months and it's honestly my favorite OS ever. It's fast, clean, attractive, and comes with useful things even macOS lacks natively (clipboard manager, proper window management, etc.)

Give it a spin on your hardware and see if it's a good fit.

Sure, there's astroturfing that one should keep their eyes peeled for, but for the most part their discussions are about the most helpful that you'll find online when researching.

This is essentially it. The year I graduated college I was clocking in 80 hours of gaming per week according to my Steam stats. Fast-forward to a decade later with a wife, kids, dog, house, and a jobby job and my "gaming" consists of whatever daily puzzles the NYT wants to throw at me and some casual stuff on the iPad with the young kids on weekends. Though I have fond memories of time spent in those digital worlds with all their wonderful art and music, I don't miss it terribly.

Totally. Speaking for myself here, but I've found that it seems to follow that what you put in is proportional to what you get out. This is basically the IKEA effect at play where we value things proportionally to the effort put in. Raising children, doing a jigsaw puzzle, nurturing relationships, grinding in a video game, etc. It all seems to hold true regardless of the pursuit.

I know many people don't exactly love Google, but I recently decided to wipe Windows 10 from my PC and was looking for another distribution as well. I eventually settled on ChromeOS Flex.

I've been using it for about a week and I'm absolutely in love with it so far. It supports the installation of Linux apps within a container (so you don't accidentally botch your system) and the UX is by far the most polished I've ever seen. Sure, it's simple, but it's very usable. It's fast on older hardware, easy on the eyes, has useful features baked in like window snapping, a clipboard manager, emoji picker, theming, screen capture, and etc. You can try it from a thumb drive to kick the wheels before making a decision. Good luck!

This thing looks ridiculous, but I kind of love that it exists. While it’s not a fit for me since I use a lot of swiping on the software keyboard and would be irked with what must be a top-heavy weight distribution, I could see this thing being useful for power users who value the tactility of hardware buttons. It’s pricey and looks awkward, but I actually think there’s enough of a market to justify its existence.

I certainly admire Beeper's gumption, but charging a subscription for a service you don't own nor maintain seems irresponsible and something a scrappy teenager hacking away in their bedroom would do, not a company with a payroll department. Maybe I just don't have the same entrepreneurial spirit as Eric Migicovsky? I'd be afraid to poke the bear at Apple with their hulking legal team ready to put an end to this at a moment's notice.
