The American left is really quite different. Orwell once described the British left as morris dancers and cheese enjoyers compared to the steel spine of Russia (paraphrase by me)

in the Uk yes. When I set up a business account with Barclays for my company in 2019 they sent a cheque book as well!

we didnt have widespread card payments in shops until the late 90s. You had to swipe the card and sign the receipt with a pen, most transactions were still cash. I worked in a bowling alley and generally larger groups would card pay. When chip and pin came along the game changed, id say 2007? I havnt carried cash since then, unless on holiday using euros or whatever.

what I find frustrating even now is when invoicing you have to wait 30 working days. You can send billions of pounds to Hong Kong in a split second but you cant pay my invoice. You’re telling me that my invoice is printed out and sits in someones in-tray for approval, then the bank is processing for another indeterminate period.

im 41, we were given a cheque book upon opening a savings account in the 90s by default. No card! Hardly used them even then, it was all cash. Except the few weeks when nobody had any cash as students so we bounced them in the local takeaway until they stopped us. Took about a week and half while the bank worked out what was going on. Our names were on a list behind the counter at the petrol station, the kebab place and the corner shop

I enjoyed this article. I have two issues with it, one of them minor. Journalists need to get off twitter, I refuse to open an account. The second is there is no mention of Iran and the role it plays in that specific region. When they placed hundreds of thousands of mines across the area between the Tigris and Euphrates (al Qurna) during the Iran - Iraq wars, and used depleted uranium weapons, they made the area impassable unless using the only small roads. Saddam Hussein drained the marshlands in order to appear as a Deity to the locals, in order to keep control of the area from insurgencies from Iran and the sectarian differences they bring to a once bountiful region. Hussein also tried to build an international airport there with a hotel, and bulldozed an area suggested to be the site of the garden of Eden. Ok, the US adventures in nation building were a disaster for Iraq, obvious to all. But there’s a lot more going on here.

at least we are a peaceful neo-liberalism. Unlike say, Chile where General Pinochet had everyone on the left shot in the back of the head and established a semi successful neo liberal economy

i love trains as much as the next guy but we have so many small minded, spoilt idiots in the UK. Just look at the HS2, they even managed to get the main Euston terminal to pause construction even though it will cost billions to restart. We will have a high speed line which terminates in Old Oak Common where nobody is, a short distance to Euston where everything is. And Eurostar is going to limit services. This country is a joke when it comes to serious projects.

We are trapped on an island with these morons

i think a company got a very big contract to have these exact airships constructed in Yorkshire. Doncaster i recall was on the news item, with the aim of flying them out of the recently closed Robin Hood Doncaster Airport. They want to keep it open as it has a huge runway and useful for so many types of aircraft

What is the advantage of using what3words over existing geolocations systems like global coordinates? I expect access is licensed to companies for a price.

On the face of it the app works, works nicely and is free for basic use. Is this just a case of slick design as a selling point? For example, someone wants to send a person to location X using the system, and there is no advantage over using apple’s pin location apart from having a text based version. You can write it down or email it, add it to a delivery note or whatever and it can be interpreted by the user correctly. Is it just nicer looking than a set of GPS coordinates?

The reason I post is because there is an upcoming funding round in the UK app Crowdcube. I dont mean to advertise any more than I can help.

I know it’s not this year but we watched Terrifier and Terrifier 2 this year and they are absolutely horrific. What made them remarkable as opposed to just sadistic violence was the sense of humour. These guys who made this are twisted fucks.

Also we watched a very odd horror( can you call it that) called Gwilliam, which appeared on Arrow Player in the short films section. Again, the sense of humour is what marked it out, and it’s sexual violence not slasher horror.

Edit - also saw brain damage for the first time. Could not stop laughing

i agree to a degree, i just think its a totally different subject. The ‘business’ side of showbusiness is interesting on its own but as you say its not what you focus on generally. Sometimes you do go ‘holy shit that looked difficult/expensive’ - i rewatched Ronin as it’s getting a 4k restoration last week, and those 90s stunts look fantastic. Part of it is knowing CGI wasnt really a thing, or at least wasnt cheap enough to make it widespread. But theres a specific scene where the two stuntmen flip over a handrail and it looked painful. But it all serves the end - you can spend 10 billion dollarydoos and the film is total horseshit. In fact its funny how often that is the case - who knew storytelling could be so simple?
