Now that half the year is over, what are your recommended horror flix in 2023
My list has been pretty short this year so I am curious if asked what you are recommending and a brief why.

I know it’s not this year but we watched Terrifier and Terrifier 2 this year and they are absolutely horrific. What made them remarkable as opposed to just sadistic violence was the sense of humour. These guys who made this are twisted fucks.
Also we watched a very odd horror( can you call it that) called Gwilliam, which appeared on Arrow Player in the short films section. Again, the sense of humour is what marked it out, and it’s sexual violence not slasher horror.
Edit - also saw brain damage for the first time. Could not stop laughing
Terrifiedr and terrifier 2 are absolutely fantastic! I watched the 2nd one again the next day, in part because the clown cafe song was stuck in my head. I’m not typically a slasher fan but I thought they just did a great job with the kills, the humor as you said, and the actor for art did was exactly what you want from a character who doesn’t make a sound and is the true embodiment of chaotic evil.
Good news for both of you, Terrifier 3 is slated for next year. If you want some backstory on Art, you can also dig up All Hallows Eve.
As for Gwilliam, I am only familiar with a comedy from a while back so not sure if it is the same thing.
Brain Damage is such a fun one.
Knock at the Cabin is one of the best movies of the year period. It’s M Night Shyamalan back in form. Utterly engaging and beautifully shot.
The only other horror movies I’ve liked this year have been M3GAN and Scream VI. M3GAN is really funny and it comes from the Director of Housebound. Scream VI is fun but kind of like fast food. These new scream movies are just retreads of the first two, but it is what it is.
I've heard very mixed things about Knock at the Cabin but maybe I'll give it a shot! I do love me some Scream though, I think the point of the new scream movies has been to reboot the franchise, for Jenna to be the new Naeve, so I kinda like the retreading!
Shyamalan definitely isn't for everyone, and my favorite of his is The Village, so make of that what you will.
Agreed. So nice to see M. Night get his groove on again. I also thought this latest Scream actually outdid 5 slightly. Same old stuff but at least they are trying to keep it fresh.
I personally loved Scream VI. I think you’re in for a treat. I enjoyed it more than the last one.
I watched it in theatres! I remember earlier this year I watched all of them for the first time in a week to prepare for it, I really enjoyed the franchise a lot.
Of the new releases I've only seen 2, Evil Dead Rise and The Popes Exorcist.
I really enjoyed Evil Dead Rise, which isn't a surprise for such a consistently good series. I think it did a good job of capturing both the camp and horror the series has been known for. I'm also really glad I caught it in theaters for the title drop alone.
The Popes Exorcist isn't a good movie, it's a by the numbers exorcism flick but it is definitely made worth watching by Russel Crowe, he's clearly having a lot of fun, any fans of his won't be disappointed.
I'm also making my way through the Scream series for the first time so I'll get to Scream VI eventually, I've heard good things so looking forward to it.
There are also a few movies I'm still looking forward to this year. In July, Cobweb and Talk To Me look good, then in October theres the Five Nights at Freddy's movie and Saw 10.
Seconding this, both of these are really fun films if you’re a horror fan. It looks like they’re planning a sequel with Russell Crowe’s exorcist character, hopefully they keep the same spirit.
Personally I thought Evil Dead Rise was pretty generic as far as horror movies go. I’d maybe recommend it to someone who isn’t into horror, but not a horror fan. I thought they relied too much on the same scares the whole movie. Also, it honestly felt way too clean to be an evil dead movie. The characters felt so dumb to be believable too. All in all I thought it was like 5/10 movie, but I agree the title drop was 10/10 cool
Big recommend for Infinity Pool. Not everybody's cup of tea, but I'm really enjoying Brandon Cronenberg's career so far. He explores similar themes to his father, but his work still definitely has an identity of its own.
Little Bone Lodge was pretty good.
Ask in November so I can say, having seen it, Saw X.
The only move I watched from this year was Evil Dead Rise and as I said in another comment, I’d give it a 5/10. They relied way too heavily music effects (not a sound a character makes but a sound that’s played when they make a slight movement). How many times do I need to see the possessed character reanimate to know that they will indeed reanimate? The whole movie just felt like it was trying to reach a wide audience rather than make a good horror movie, and my general thought was it’s got “my first horror movie” vibes.
If you want good evil dead, then watch Evil Dead 2013, a good horror movie.
Not new but I just started American Horror Story. I’m on season 5, hotel, now, and I have to say so far this show is so refreshing compared to other horror stuff out there. It doesn’t feel like a safe bloody thriller. The writers do not pull punches in pretty much any topic, which actually leads me to feel horrified. It’s much more than just horror though because they include drama, comedy, tragedy, really all of that and sometimes in a single episode. I just think a lot of horror writers could learn a thing or two.
The new Evil Dead is one of the few I would recommend for this year. But if I do want to watch good Evil Dead, I'll check my collection and choose literally any of them. If I had to prioritize them, though, the remake (2013) which literally is the definition of trying to reach a wider audience, would be at the bottom. Then again I said the same thing about Army of Darkenss trying to hit a wider audience so it isn't a bad thing. But keep in mind, that still in my eyes makes them quite good.
As for American Horror Story, prepare for it to slowly get worse and worse but you are still in the area of them being exceptional so enjoy!!
Great to see some participation, I will only throw one out since it wasn't mentioned here yet, "Sick" That is about how dismal of a horror year I believe it has been. And before anyone mentions "Malum" please watch "Last Shift" first. Literally, the same movie by the same director, done better in 2014.
