I'm reading Rainbows End by Verner Vinge. It's much more grounded than his previous galactic adventures. It was written in the early 2000s about a potential future in 2025 which has made it fun to compare his guesses with reality. Wearable computing and augmented reality didn't quite take off so much, but his concept of Belief Circles seems to be getting closer to reality as so many people's world view is heavily filtered.

My only complaint so far is the story centers around a main character who just isn't likeable. I wouldn't want every story to be limited to charismatic heroes but if they have almost no redeeming qualities it's hard to care what happens to them. I'm still holding out some hope he changes by the end or that at least some profound insights are made to tie it all together.

I've been playing it regularly with a group of friends for awhile now. We usually meet around 7pm PST which is around noon aussie time I think. I can add you on steam if you want to try then.

I just completed Baby Steps. A literal walking simulator where the objective is to climb up obstacles by carefully moving only your characters feet one step at a time. It was co-created by Bennett Foddy (of Getting Over It fame) which means it also has a wide range of insidious level designs, rage inducing dynamic sounds and very awkward cut-scenes. Basically they took all the easy, addictive and manipulative unwritten rules of AAA game design and did the exact opposite. I think only players who are masochistic enough to put up with all the rage-bait will enjoy this kind of challenge.

That said, it IS a proper uniquely challenging game which outside of precision platformers seem to be rare these days. If you can stomach some of the childish humor and the brutal challenges it can feel pretty rewarding to complete. I'll likely play it again sometime to see all the areas I missed.

This graffiti art sums up my feelings on it pretty well. I suppose I can still appreciate the history if not where it currently ended up at least.

Yeah, GIMP may be good as an image format program but there are way better free tools for actually drawing art with.

I found this new tutorial on creating a web comic with free software. It's great to see the whole process from story board and panel setup to speech and character alignment.

Abiotic Factor - SCP inspired wackyness. Tons of areas to explore, lots of fighting, crafting, cooking and a few puzzles to solve.

Volcanoids - Fight steampunk robots, collect resources to upgrade and expand your drillship.

Necesse - Like a top-down Terraria but with a bit more village-sim where you can assign tasks for farming and defense.

At least I learned not to worry about production speeds since by the time you get a new line built that last station piece slowly trickling in will have finished.

Clonk Rage is the older sprite based game. It has worms-like mechanics that allow you to dig through the ground but the heart of the game is collecting material to build structures to further processes material and craft tools and vehicles. It has a complex physics system with fluids like water and lava that create obstacles you have to deal with when digging tunnels. It has story based missions or randomized maps with a set resource goal. There are lots of mods that work in single, co-op or pvp. I remember the Western mod was one of the better ones.

OpenClonk came out later and uses OpenGL with 3d models for characters. It has the same game mechanics and the controls are easier to figure out but it doesn't have as many missions or mods. It is FOSS though and is probably easier to run on modern systems.

I also played a lot of Clonk Rage and OpenClonk which judging by the forums and leaderboards were only ever really popular in Germany.

I think there is a market for capable and reliable phones that specifically will not do social media. Especially parents on the fence about getting their kids their first phone. I imagine they might pay a premium for that if it's from a brand they can trust.

Whether or not this phone is a good fit for that is of course debatable.
