Having Linux as my main desktop for over 20 years I can also say that audio has been the biggest headache. It is usually fixable but I've had everything from consistently wrong default output devices to applications crashing each other fighting for control of ALSA input devices. And this is with dozens of different motherboards and a few dedicated sound cards.

I tend to put most of the blame on hardware manufacturers since none of them really advertise Linux support and many of the drivers are reverse engineered.

One issue that can come up with a custom fstab is using device names instead of UUID. The system can 'randomly' assign different drives to different device names, so it could work 5 times in a row and then suddenly the wrong drive has that name. You can use blkid to list them and set it correctly.

There are other problems with secure boot and updating nvidia drivers when dualbooting but that's all magic to me. I use AMD and disable secure boot anyway.

I have primarily used debian for decades but I installed PopOS on a family computer and it's immediately easily usable for a media/web desktop. But for more traditional office application type work, especially for people coming from windows, it can be pretty jarring getting used to Gnome's idiosyncrasies. I really think this will massively improve once the Cosmic desktop environment is stable.

Mint is a solid choice though, Cinnamon DE is a little closer to what windows users may be used to.
I also think debian or fedora with KDE are really attractive for a productivity use case too. I prefer a really light LXQT DE myself but it's not something I'd ever recommend to new users.

My parents told me that I wasn't really reading well and had fallen behind other students in kindergarten and 1st grade. I don't remember that, but I do remember not having any interest in schoolwork. I do clearly remember sometime in 2nd grade we couldn't go to recess for some reason and had to find something to do indoors, so on a whim I picked up one of those red ball books and looked at the pictures and started to sound out the words and it suddenly started to click. I think I just needed to figure it out on my own without a teacher trying to force me into it before I could really start to learn. Once I did though I really got into it, early comic strip books also helped a ton to keep me interested before getting into novels later.

I picked up Accelerando by Charles Stross in a used book sale not expecting much but I found it to be intelligently written. I also find its predictions of the near future really funny since it was written in 2005. Alas Microsoft didn't get broken up into Baby Bills and Slashdotting didn't become a major real life event!

It also has a general theme that all the new technology of the 90s would make everyone smarter. I admit I was naive enough to have similar views at the time. While I didn't expect it would make people wiser I had hoped it might at least lower ignorance, not help spread it to the insanity we have today.

I don't have any direct knowledge of them but I've seen tons of them posted to social media platforms and from reading responses I'd say they do basically nothing.

However, those posts can generate a lot of discussion around whatever issue the petition is for and that can have an effect if the target of the petition is already engaged with their community. So basically you may as well skip the petitions and just keep generating discussions on whatever platforms the target is already engaged with.

It would be great to hear from anyone who's had a different experience though.

While probably not as impressive looking as others mentioned here I got to go to the Computer Museum in Seattle before it shut down. They had everything from ancient room sized behemoths to personal computers from the 70s and 80s. But it wasn't just displays, they were all running and anyone could use them. They even had a room decorated to perfectly match a living room from the early 80s with a working Atari and a couch to sit and play on. Such a nostalgia trip for anyone who grew up in that era, a shame they couldn't re-open after covid.
