I actually like the mechanic in Valheim as it lets me know it's time to go home, get food, rest, arrows and upgrades. Otherwise I'm tempted to stay out a bit longer than I should and get stomped by the next 2 star critter that I don't have the stamina to run from.

Yeah it's just a different type of exploration, in a linear RPG it's better to completely explore a town or dungeon before moving onto the next, if something is too hard you go back to grind the earlier areas.
I had been trying to completely explore the Remnant camp and do all the quests there but they were getting quite difficult. I finally decided it might be worth risking the trip to Nemeton and when I get there the first quests were suddenly very easy again. Not what I was expecting at all! I think just pays better to follow the story more than trying to peak into every corner first.

Ahh I was afraid that would be the case as they do seem polar opposites. The game has also been challenging to me because I grew up with linear JRPGs and western ones always feel too open to me so I end up trying to systematically explore everything which just doesn't work out that well.

I'm playing the ARPG Drova. Whenever I see ARPG I tend to think Torchlight but this is nothing like that, it's got lots of really good writing and plot impactful decisions. It feels more like an early Baldur's Gate game but with action instead of turn based combat. The focus also isn't about repetitively killing monsters since you get waay more experience just completing quests. I've also found it fairly challenging since it gives you the freedom to explore a lot of places that will just flatten you at low levels. While it's not what I expected I am really starting to enjoy it.

Boatmurdered was a classic, though Kruggsmash has been around since before steam release and his videos are a lot of fun and I think a bit more approachable.

When I was 8th grade I built my dad built me a giant tesla coil for a science fair. It was pretty fun to show off how it could light up florescent bulbs a foot away and make everyone's hair stand up. It did knock out VHF signals for a block or so around the school when we flipped it on though.
I imagine the copper and equipment for something that big would be a bit pricey these days but something smaller scale like that might still be fun.

I finished The Abandoned Planet and found it to be a pretty solid Point&Click game with some great animation, only a few rough edges and not-too-difficult puzzles. Some of the voice acting isn't the best but it's okay. I still managed to spend a good 4 hours on it though, overall a pretty solid game.

I've also played a lot of Roots of Pacha with a friend. It unabashedly steals the game loop from Stardew Valley, clear a field, grow crops, raise animals, do favors for villagers. I'd say the biggest difference is that it has no combat but instead more exploration and some simple puzzles. The mini-games are a lot less stressful too, even fishing is pretty chill. Resources and NPCs are tracked and easy to find on the map. Very relaxing game but still fun to progress.

Weird to think of re-reading books as lazy. I frequently re-read my favorite books. I'd rather feel good about a story I like than take the risk of slogging through some new drivel that leaves me feeling worse for it.

    Some of my favorites:

    • Lord of the Rings
    • Never Ending Story
    • Ender's Game
    • The Diamond Age
    • Anathem
    • Hyperion
    • A Fire Upon the Deep
    • Project Hail Mary

Or if I'm feeling really stressed out I'll even go back to the comic strip books I had when I was little that taught me to enjoy reading in the first place. Calvin & Hobbes, Farside, Garfield etc.

I recently finished Afterplace which before my review was still Under the Radar.

It's a simple top down ARPG with a focus on story, characters and exploring a surreal world. While there's only a handful of upgrades and items the humorous writing and atmosphere made it a really enjoyable experience.

Same, I've never even used most of the tech he talks about. The idea that any of that is essential to exist in society is the one part I can't agree with. There's a whole world out there of people working on free software that has no strings attached, it's often slightly less convenient I suppose but it sure beats yelling at the cloud hoping it will change.
