Monetization is very reasonable. No forced ads, but you can watch in exchange for some benefit. There's a premium currency that you can buy but also can slowly earn by playing. Some exclusive ships can only be bought but you don't need them. I have not spent any actual money. I do watch some ads.

I think most of the ticket sale doesn't go to the theater, so the theater should actually be motivated by concession sales.
I'd guess it's the studios/production companies that don't want intermissions. Theaters probably have contracts that prevent them from adding an intermission themselves.
