I know there's still technically a "mainstream" industry, but I really love how broadly discoverable music has become. 20 years ago it felt like nearly everyone was listening to the same few things. It really does feel like that's been changing, and it's wonderful.

I have no idea of what's a classic or what's popular, but I homed in on thoughtful and interesting and here's some of what I've got haha

First Aid Kit - Out of My Head

On a river, I'm floatin' down the stream
    And back again
Like a beggar, on my knees
    Am runnin' out of time?

Stuck inside my dreamin', fallin' behind Runnin' on low, does it matter now?
Let me out, out of my mind

    Big Thief - Change

Would you live forever, never die
    While everything around passes?
Would you smile forever, never cry
    While everything you know passes?

Would you stare forever at the sun
And never watch the moon rising?
Would you walk forever in the light
To never learn the secret of the quiet night?

    Still like a stone
    Like a hill, like home
    Still, what I find
Is you are always on my mind

    Andrew Bird - Sisyphus

    Sisyphus peered into the mist
A stone's throw from the precipice, paused
Did he jump or did he fall as he gazed into the maw of the morning mist?
Did he raise both fists and say, "To hell with this" and just let the rock roll?

l'd rather fail like a mortal than flail like a god,
    I'm a lightning rod
    History forgets the moderates
For those who sit recalcitrant and taciturn
You know I'd rather turn and burn than scale this edifice, yeah
    Where's my accomplice?
So take my hand, we'll do more than stand
Take my hand, we'll claim this land
Take my hand, and we'll let the rock roll

    Aldous Harding - The Barrel

Rushed in to hold down your page
And now I sleep 'side words you do not read with me
I hear a song from inside the maze, the very one you made
You shook at the ivory mantle
As a poet, I knew to be gentle
When you have a child, so begins the braiding
And in that braid you stay

First Aid Kit - Lion's Roar

Now the pale morning sings of forgotten things
She plays a tune for those who wish to overlook
The fact that they've been blindly deceived
By those who preach and pray and teach
But she falls short and the night explodes in laughter
But don't you come here and say I didn't warn you
About the way your world can alter
And oh how you try to command it all still
Every single time it all shifts one way or the other

And I'm a goddamn coward, but then again so are you
And the lion's roar, the lion's roar
Has me evading and hollering for you
And I never really knew what to do

I watched 3:10 to Yuma (1957) and Day of the Jackal (1973) this week, first time viewing for each.

It ended up being a pretty fun double feature. Some shared themes as well as interesting discordant notes.

Ben Wade and the Jackal are in many ways opposites of one another. Everyone knows Wade's name; no one knows the Jackal's. Wade is happy to trade his freedom for a roll in the hay; the Jackal risks himself for nothing and no one. Wade makes excuses for his crimes; the Jackal has no conscience to be cleared.

These men are shaped by their worlds. In the lawless west, Wade is a force of chaos. He trusts that everything will work out somehow, and goes with the flow. In the modern world of red tape and records, the Jackal is in many ways a monster of bureaucracy. He crosses every 't' and minds every detail.

Two very different villains. Two very different driving forces:

    Can we catch the Jackal?

    Can we keep Ben Wade?

The endings of both films are very satisfying, and I'd recommend either.

The show Dexter got pretty popular. Not as many people read the books. You can tell by how little discussion there is about how fucking insane they are.

The first book is pretty close to the show. Dexter is dating a woman, getting closer to her two kids, working with the police, and... Y'know, murdering serial killers as a hobby.

It's a pretty straightforward crime novel. Dexter talks about his Dark Passenger, which is a metaphor for his urge to kill, personified as a literary device to show his struggle with it.

In the show, Dexter keeps on serial killin' and coppin' his way through life. It follows the natural progression from season 1, with a different Big Bad serial killer each season. It gets pretty wild. Then they keep it going way longer than they should have and it starts to suck pretty bad.

But the books lose the plot pretty much immediately.

    spoilers

In book two, we find out that Dexter's Dark Passenger is an immortal psychic alien parasite. It gets scared away by another parasite, after which Dexter loses not only the urge but the ability to kill. He reclaims his parasite, and then his step kids catch a parasite of their own so he has to be their serial murder tutor.

    It's... A lot.

It feels dirty. These are real problems that actual human beings deal with, and it feels somehow wrong to try to turn them into entertainment this way. It's also such a dramatic change from the set up of the first book. It's jarring.

I never made it much farther into the books. Maybe they're good? I'm alright never really knowing haha.

Yeah I don't think there's anything morally wrong with separating the art from the artist (up to a (nebulous) point.) I get it intellectually. But feelings is feelings. They demand to be felt.

Based on my legal education (watching My Cousin Vinny once a year) the issue is actually that the judge will hold you in contempt of court and then your hot fiance has to bail you out, but she's running out of money because she beat a guy at pool but he's refusing to pay up on their bet.

I think I might be ready to take the bar.

Bacon and Shue are just entertaining to watch. Everyone else is a little boring.

Some of the special effects have aged poorly, but some of them are still surprisingly effective.

Overall I had a good time watching it.

Have you seen Happy Feet 2?

The Happy Feet movies are surreal ambitious animated musicals directed by George Miller of Mad Max fame.

In the second one, Brad Pitt and Matt Damon play gay krill. They're not even a part of the main story. It just occasionally cuts to two gay krill going through relationship issues.

George Miller is a strange man. I kinda love those movies.
