Have you watched any TV shows recently you want to discuss? Any shows you want to recommend or are hyped about? Feel free to discuss anything here.
Please just try to provide fair warning of spoilers if you can.
I finally finished Barry Season 4, I thought it was.... okay? I think NoHo Hank steals every part of the show, but
Spoilers
I don't like how they handled Fuches in the final season, it didn't seem like he was super consisten with any of his characterization. Barry turning a new leaf was hilarious but also seemed a bit out of place. It was definitely amusing that Barry met his sudden end.I also finally finished Shrinking Season 1, and I loved it! It was a fun season that felt as lighthearted as Ted Lasso but slightly less wholesome.
Getting started on House of the Dragon now, but I've been looking for some easier to watch shows that I can put on while on my rowing machine, for 30ish minutes at a time. Any suggestions?
I avoided Shrinking thinking it would be too sad or too serious but it was so wonderful and handles tough situations so well. I can't wait for Season 2.
It's handled so well and I LOVE that it avoids so many of the classic tropes. I almost rolled my eyes at so many parts of the show but it's been so fantastic in the handling everything and actually tells an interesting story with the skeletons of a classic sitcom.
I finally got the chance to watch the second season of Yellowjackets! I was not disappointed at the amount of questions from the first season that we got answers to, and I'm looking forward to getting even more answers on season 3. I'd love to discuss fan theories with any viewers here.
I got stuck in a rut of watching the same cooking shows I've already watched 10 times over. So popped over to Disney+ and immediately found Fort Protection and First Alaskans. Both about people that live in secluded areas and how they survive. One dude is quite literally straight out of Compton and married a Native woman and had a few kids and learned how to be a provider in AK.
Another show is Wicked Tuna. I've grown attached to these people and cried my eyes out when a captain my age had his best friend unexpectedly pass away. He was the first-mate on his boat. So that was awful, but he brought his sister in (and she is fucking SAVAGE!) and it made me think of how me and my sister work together and they actually won the season.
Another show I've been watching is the Bear. Yes, technically a cooking show, I guess, but it is amazing. I'm trying to pace myself so I don't watch the whole season in 3 days.
I am planning on binging the new second season of The Bear this weekend. While not particularly interested in food/cooking myself, the first season was still incredible. I checked it out initially because I like Jeremy Allen White (from his time on Shameless), and I thought he did a fantastic job. It was definitely a nice little unexpected surprise last year. And for season 2 to release exactly 1 year later is great. Seems like most shows these days leave you waiting much longer for new seasons.
You're going to love it. Most of the episodes focus on a single person. However, there is one episode where they threw their entire budget into casting. Jon Bernthal, Bob Odinkirk, Jamie Lee Curtis, and several others. I think I have two more episodes and I can't wait to see where it goes.
I've been a sitcom mood this past while so I've been watching The King of Queens. It's exactly how I remember it. It's not a 10/10 but it's definitely still my favourite sitcom. It's just something that never fails to make me laugh and I can throw on basically any episode without having to worry about continuity from a previous one. I don't see anyone talk about it anymore, I'd like to know other people's thoughts on it.
I think your assessment is spot on. I don’t know if it is my favorite of all time but it is a great show to throw on whenever.
Working through the 2nd season of Abbott Elementary. It took me months to get to episode 3 of the first one but after that I was hooked. Such a funny show with hints/character types of all those kinds of mockumentary style predecessors but with a fresh perspective. And I really enjoy the fact that it feels like it's for Black audiences.
Also idk if it's "TV" exactly but I've recently got access to Dropout shows and Game Changer and Breaking News has had me in tears on more than one occasion.
I don't know if this is on topic for the free for all, but... I really miss my gilmore girls subreddit group, and I would love to know if there are any fellow GG fans on Tildes?
For those who are, I have to ask the dreaded question: team Logan, Jess or Dean? Or none of the above? I fall into team Jess, but my true teams are Kirk, Gill and Paul Anka as they are the reasons I have watched this show a thousand times.
I love Gilmore Girls - it's one of my top 10 shows of all time - and I would say I'm not on any of those teams. I liked all of them, but don't think any one of them was great for anyone involved. Rory + Dean and Rory + Logan both involved affairs, and Jess had too much of his own stuff to figure out to be a good partner to anybody.
I have really been enjoying “From” on MGM+/Prime. The season 2 finale just released this past Sunday. Now the wait for season 3 begins.
It’s a mystery box show from some of the same people who were involved with “Lost”. “FROM unravels the mystery of a nightmarish town in middle America that traps all those who enter. As the unwilling residents fight to keep a sense of normalcy and search for a way out, they must also survive the threats of the surrounding forest; including the terrifying creatures that come out when the sun goes down.” It throws all of these questions and mysteries at you from the start and (very) slowly starts to answer some of them. Has some decent suspense and horror elements to it too. Few jump scares here and there to keep you on your toes.
The writing/acting can be questionable at times, and there are some pacing issues, but I absolutely love the show. The premise/plot is just so interesting. I haven’t gotten this obsessed with a new show in a while, so even with its flaws I will always recommend it!
So over the last couple of years, the shows that held my attention and rewarded me sticking with the series were Derry Girls (Northren Irish teen comedy), Kim's Convenience (Canadian sitcom about a Korean family) and Midnight Diner (A Japanese slice of life about a restaurant cook and his customers in tokyo.) Midnight Diner in particular has beautiful shots of food, adult situations and the diner itself is almost a character, much like the bar in Cheers.
Before that it was Bojack Horseman and the IT Crowd.
the dvd commentary for The IT Crowd is one of the better ones if you have any interest in working with a live-studio-audience... and more. Its a far more insightful and knowledgable commentary than I expected.
I really wish Graham Linehan wasn't such a piece of shit, because IT Crowd, Black Books, & Father Ted used to be some of my favorite comfort shows and I have a hard time enjoying them the same way now.
for me, I separate the art from the artist, so to speak. I like that episode, but I get why others might not.
Linehan pretty much lost everything over this issue, which is sad.
Yeah I don't think there's anything morally wrong with separating the art from the artist (up to a (nebulous) point.)
I get it intellectually.
But feelings is feelings. They demand to be felt.
Did anybody watch H/JACK (Hijack) with Idris Elba? If so, how far into the first episode did you make it before turning it off and removing the series from Sonarr?
This is a horrible, tedious piece of work not too uncommon for Elba. He should be getting better scripts than this.
As always, I've got the normal cool shows on the go. I've started the nth rewatch of The Wire. I've almost got it memorized... I wouldn't be surprised if this is my tenth go-through. Anyway, I love it and I'm not really in love with anything on right now besidesCountdown and Strange New Worlds. Warrior starts in two days, which is good. Jack Ryan will be good but immediately forgettable like the other seasons.
The Bear was perfect.
tldr; a lot of the shows right now are lacklustre. The Bear was perfect.
Any other Wool readers watching Silo?
I would love to have a book vs show discussion after the finale... Seems like they might be changing some pretty big details from the book
I read the first two books, but haven't watched the show at all yet. Normally I don't enjoy movies or shows adapted from books unless I watch them first, before I read the book. Would you recommend the show?
Yes I would. The first 2 episodes and last few episodes have been interesting, and some of what they added is fun to guess about. The middle episodes are zzzzz though. So I would add it to your watch list for when you don't have anything better to watch
I read the first two books and just found myself just unable to buy into the basic conceits of the plot.
The cast on the show looks great and I find myself considering giving it a shot, especially if they're changing things.
Yeah some of the plot of the books is .... Not good. But I knew that going into it so I had low expectations lol. I am only halfway through Shift so maybe it will get even worse. So far it has kept my interest though regardless.
