And therein lies the issue with any attempts at domesticating wild animals. The foxes were friendly sure, but were they as trainable as dogs? Do they require special housing in comparison to a dog? A special diet?

For example, look at savannah cats. F1 and F2 are technically "domesticated" but far more wild than any housecat. Unless the owner is able to build them a large enough outdoor enclosure with proper stimulation they usually end up being rehomed or neglected because they are destructive.

Visit any wildlife rescue and see what happens when people own wild animals. They are friendly as hell, which is exactly their downfall. That's why they can never be released into the wild. They are trapped in between being too wild and too tame for the rest of their life because someone thought they could take care of them as a pet.

A lot of people don't even take proper care of their domesticated cats, dogs, etc that suffer when having to live on their own. Which is why there are millions of them are euthanized every year. We definitely don't need to introduce wild animals into that clusterfuck, as friendly as they may be.

The exotic pet trade needs to die yesterday

It's not surprising that someone who purchases new phones every month is trying the "you can't do it perfectly so why do it at all?" argument that I see so much. It's just a way to feel better about your own choices by putting others down.

I'm not sure if the trend is continuing post COVID, but the US maternal death rate has been increasing while in California it has been decreasing. It's just that other states don't care enough to adopt policies that have been proven to work. They're fine with these people dying every year.

The easiest way to buy ethically is to buy used. Poshmark and Mercari for clothing, Swappa for electronics. OfferUp and Craigslist for large stuff like furniture etc

Now obviously there is some stuff you can't buy used, but you've already drastically reduced your impact. It's hard to keep up with "ethical" companies because they keep selling out to slave labor to increase profits eventually. It's much more accessible to buy used as much as possible and don't stress about the little things.

In addition to stir fry, fried rice. You can throw basically any vegetables and protein into fried rice and it tastes good.

Soups and stews are a lot of chopping but the end result is generally that you throw them all in together with some broth. I generally use an instant pot for these but a slow cooker works also for not heating up your house.

I also love Smitten Kitchen's zucchini butter pasta. Really any pasta with veggies is pretty easy.

And grilled cheese or quesadillas is always an easy option. We also keep a frozen pizza in our fridge for when we both don't want to cook, way cheaper than going out to eat.

I really like the spend with pennies site for recipes. They are easy and straightforward.

I feel like social media is just exposing it's toxicity. It started out as something to connect with others, but devolved into maximizing clicks and view time. And we've seen how that impacts people falling into rabbit holes of QAnon or whatever misguided bullshit from an innocent interest. Unfortunately I can't remember the podcast, but there was one that did a really good job explaining how YouTube's algorithm ended up sucking in people to QAnon.

But now we are at a point where social media has decided it's users are so addicted they will pay for access. Twitter providing higher limits to those who pay, and Reddit allowing third party access. And they are right people are addicted, sooo many people on reddit were ready to pay prices as high as $10 a month or more.

I would love for this to be the downfall of the current form of social media and replaced with something that makes it easy to connect/gather info on your hobbies and interests but isn't intentionally addictive. But I don't think that will exist while there will always be the push for constantly increasing profits into infinity. That's the real driving force here.

Yup my company just decided this is a great idea. No firing (yet) but you have to be arbitrarily ranked in the top 20% to qualify for a shitty raise. Everyone else gets nothing. Dumbest shit ever, my manager admitted he has no idea what to tell anyone because they can have stellar feedback and end up with fuckall because of the curve they mandated onto everyone.

I used to work at a place that did the same thing and it was always the managers friends that ended up with the good raises. The higher ups didn't care no one lasted more than 2 years. Terrible place to work.

Having cats. There have been a lot of times I've really considered it but then I think about what would happen to my cats if I did it and that always makes me change my mind. I've read a lot of other people say the same thing about having pets. Long term therapy and medication as a lot of people have said, but that's a trial and error process and you need to keep your eye on the end of the tunnel. Because I know how permanent that state of mind can feel, but I've always come out of it eventually.

It was slightly more complicated than installing Vanced but I don't think it's prohibitively difficult or anything

Yeah I thought the inflation at the grocery store would finally be leveling out by now, but it seems every week prices are going up still. We are spending basically double what we did before the pandemic, and we are eating significantly less meat now. And I'm not replacing that meat with expensive meat substitutes, but vegetables and eggs which are significantly less than meat costs now.

Back before the pandemic we ordered out A LOT because I had a hell of a commute. There is no way we could afford that now, take out food price increases have been even worse than groceries. And I'm a DevOps Engineer, I'm not hurting for money. But things are getting tight even for me. And my company wants to promote me for a 5% raise which is basically a pay cut!

I'm not sure how the average person is getting by right now, especially in HCOL areas. And there is no end in sight.

I think silo 1 is going to be another "big reveal" in season 2, maybe when Lukas/Sims/whoever does their "interview" with them. I'm not sure how Sims will work out in Lukas's position since Lukas was always sympathetic to Juliette, but I guess we will find out. Probably some plot twist about whatever master plan him and his wife have.

My guess with the door is that they are completely throwing out Shift and Dust from the narrative and continuing the future seasons as a continuation of Juliette's story at the end of the book. Maybe after season 2 but who knows how much filler they will insert 🤷‍♀️

My best guess with the door is that they do connect all the silos (maybe intended for use during construction?) and she will discover another door when she goes underwater in Silo 17. Then in future seasons they will "unite" multiple silos using the door or something. Hard to guess when they aren't sticking to the source material.

People can take their helmet off but it's not easy, there is a lock you have to bash and break open. I don't remember exactly what they showed in the show, but it's revealed immediately in the book when Holston takes his helmet off that the screen is fake. So yes, at least one person did take their helmet off. Most people don't have enough time to clean and struggle to get their helmet off though, and everyone before Juliette has always cleaned.

They might be explaining the helmet thing more in season 2 so spoilers....

But it's a screen inside the helmet that shows the video of the outside all green. The reveal of the helmet in the book is much better IMO, they find the video and discuss that it can't be on the big screen in the cafeteria because the pixels indicate it's for an 8x2 screen (I don't remember the actual dimensions) and that's how Juliette figures it out. Yes the intent is that everyone who goes out is supposed to clean because they want everyone to see it's safe to go outside. Like a lot of plot points in the book series, you can't think too hard about it because it doesn't stand up to questioning very well lol

The time that Juliette is sheriff in the book is pretty boring also, but way shorter than the show. I agree the middle filler episodes were really boring, and the book was more fast paced and interesting IMO
