'Silo' season finale: book reader discussion

I would like to have a discussion of the season finale and season as a whole of Silo with other book readers who know the overarching plot. Non book readers are welcome obviously, but spoilers will be here.

Click for spoilers

Overall I think it was decent and I like a lot of the additions they made. Some of the episodes in the middle were very filler-y and kinda boring. But I wasn't a huge fan of the reveal in the show vs the books, for the screen and especially for the tape. The heat tape is like the determining factor here and they really glossed over it. I'm not sure if I would have gotten it if I didn't read the book.

However there are still mysteries, I was wondering where they were going to go with Lukas since he got busted in the last episode. Now he's going to the mines??? Who is she going to talk to over the radio now? Also where do the mines go to avoid other silos lol? Although I'm not really mad about the change if Lukas doesn't end up being Bernard's shadow. In the book it was very "hey you random dude, be my shadow now suddenly"

And what about that mystery door? Are they connected to the other silos somehow? Bernard seemed kind of surprised when Jules mentioned it and said there were many mysteries... I wonder if he actually knows anything about them or not. I was surprised Sims didn't know about the fake helmet screen, but I guess he wouldn't know that if wasn't actually Bernard's shadow yet. I really question if he will actually end up being Bernard's shadow though...

Overall, would watch season 2. I wanna know what ends up happening.

I haven’t watched the season finale yet, but I’m about 90% of the way through Wool and I feel like they’re almost completely different stories. It’s like the TV show took all the characters and dropped them into a new narrative.

I understand why some of the book narrative wouldn’t make great TV, but it’s weird seeing how they shoehorned in some characters and combined others.

Very curious how they handle Jules and the lower door, opposed to what happens in the book. Looking forward to Solo. Enjoyed how they made Peter a closer ally to Jules.

My guess with the door is that they are completely throwing out Shift and Dust from the narrative and continuing the future seasons as a continuation of Juliette's story at the end of the book. Maybe after season 2 but who knows how much filler they will insert 🤷‍♀️

My best guess with the door is that they do connect all the silos (maybe intended for use during construction?) and she will discover another door when she goes underwater in Silo 17. Then in future seasons they will "unite" multiple silos using the door or something. Hard to guess when they aren't sticking to the source material.

I'd guess they aren't going to do too much with the prequel stuff from Shift. The whole "twist" that Troy is actually Donald works fine in a book, but you obviously wouldn't be able to pull that...

we do see the other silo's are not that far away in the final shot.

My thought the whole season was "why doesn't anyone take off their helmet as soon as they 'see' its breathable! They must be putting "poison" in the 'filter'.. "

But i guess the ending was... There really is an apocalypse/wasteland? and they used bad tape on purpose.. but didn't with her... so she stayed alive? (is that what you reference they glossed over?)

my question is... how are they 'hacking' their vision/helmets to see something pretty... and why? (to clean the camera?)

I feel like I, and most people, would try to take their helmet off immediately when walking out and seeing that.. do they cover that in the book? (is it locked on, and you need a 2nd person to take it off?)

and lastly i agree, whole season could just be the first couple and last couple episodes and would have been better.

People can take their helmet off but it's not easy, there is a lock you have to bash and break open. I don't remember exactly what they showed in the show, but it's revealed immediately in the book when Holston takes his helmet off that the screen is fake. So yes, at least one person did take their helmet off. Most people don't have enough time to clean and struggle to get their helmet off though, and everyone before Juliette has always cleaned.

They might be explaining the helmet thing more in season 2 so spoilers....

But it's a screen inside the helmet that shows the video of the outside all green. The reveal of the helmet in the book is much better IMO, they find the video and discuss that it can't be on the big screen in the cafeteria because the pixels indicate it's for an 8x2 screen (I don't remember the actual dimensions) and that's how Juliette figures it out. Yes the intent is that everyone who goes out is supposed to clean because they want everyone to see it's safe to go outside. Like a lot of plot points in the book series, you can't think too hard about it because it doesn't stand up to questioning very well lol

My guess isthat the mystery door goes to the seed. The 'digger' they've depicted on the show is massive and already pointed straight down - it's clearly what they dug the silo hole with, and very much overkill for how large of a hole it would dig towards the seed. Maybe in the show there's already a tunnel leading there.

The time that Juliette is sheriff in the book is pretty boring also, but way shorter than the show. I agree the middle filler episodes were really boring, and the book was more fast paced and interesting IMO

I’m glad to see these comments; I read the three books some years back, so I couldn’t remember this much ‘murder mystery’ story, and I thought I was going crazy. Haven’t gotten to the finale yet, but glad to hear they included the detail that’s gonna widen the plot and drive it forward into a follow-up season. And I hope Juliet uses the between-season downtime to work on her American accent.

Yeah they really rushed through the heat tape and the fake visor screen stuff. Like each of those reveals/discoveries could have been an episode, but they decided to cram it all into the end? I'm curious if people who haven't read the books will completely understand what's happening.

I liked the reveal of the other Silos at the end -- was done in a way that will foster some discussion for those who haven't read the books. Having Bernard call Silo 1 on the radio might have been a little too on the nose, but I was definitely betting on them including it in the finale.

I think silo 1 is going to be another "big reveal" in season 2, maybe when Lukas/Sims/whoever does their "interview" with them. I'm not sure how Sims will work out in Lukas's position since Lukas was always sympathetic to Juliette, but I guess we will find out. Probably some plot twist about whatever master plan him and his wife have.

I made it to Ep9 before starting the Wool Omnibus and have enjoyed seeing the differences between the show and books and think both are great. Now that I've seen the season finale and read the Omnibus, I'm thinking about continuing the series as I wait for Season 2 to come out.

How are Shift and Dust? Generally as good (or better) than Wool?

Overall, they’re heading in the same direction, though I wish there were more episodes — I felt like the whole visor screen and faulty heat tape were shoehorned in there towards the end when it deserved more exposition. Still, I’m really grateful the books got adapted as seeing the silo come to life has been something else.

I'm about halfway through Wool. (I'm at the part where Lucas is going up the stairs with the hope that the cleaning didn't happen after he sees the porter.) So far I like the book but I wish some of the filler from the show was also in the book. The connection between the characters is better in the show. It was weird that Holston didn't pick the sheriff. The book doesn't elaborate on how she helped them. I also liked the changes like how they made Walker a woman. There were a lot of background stories that were really cool for example the kid slide early on and later you see people disassemble it. Bernard is a lot cooler in the show, in the book he is just a one dimensional villain looking for power?

Some things that aren't obvious in the show is why the Forgiveness day is there to protect Bernard. Also the tape thing was kinda weird, I don't think it was obvious that the tape from mechanical is better than the IT one.

Is judicial even in the book? No mention so far even though Sims was probably the coolest character.

Surprisingly, the book has less mysteries than the show. The intrigue is setup differently. For example in the book they know what stars are but in the show they don't know what the lights are called.

Anyway, I enjoyed both so far. The book is really easy to read.
