I will join in on your hope, but what chance do you give to MS actually improving things for the various IPs? I feel like it's sub 33% but I'm generally pretty pessimistic about things in general.

This weekend I tried to not be sad about the recent vacancy on the Supreme Court and what that will likely mean for deciding cases over the next 2+ decades but failed. I tried not be angry that Republicans have gotten pretty much everything they wanted over these last 4 years and will continue applying their will on the populace basically unimpeded, but I failed at that too. I tried not be frustrated that no matter how this election turns out there's likely to be a massive, lengthy shitshow for everyone to deal with, but failed there as well.

I am now trying to make some tasty baked goods, so hopefully that will end up being the success I've been looking for. Small though it would be.

I fear not, and this most recent consolidation/buyout is part of a growing pattern of destruction of our favorite IPs. Please help me see the good in this.

Not just big, but the biggest problem we face is that the natural environment that supports all life is breaking down more and more rapidly as time goes along, and it's too late to "fix" it. There are multiple issues we face and multiple feedback loops that have been set into motion, any one of which would present a serious challenge but all together paint a grim picture of what's to come.

It's not being addressed on any meaningful level, because doing so would equal less profits for those in power and that's not acceptable for them so it continues accelerating toward a climate that will become more and more inhospitable as time goes along.

It would have been great if our political leaders had acted in the late 70's/early 80's, as that seems to have been the last chance where swift and decisive action by the major polluting countries could have made a difference. But now...well we can still make some difference, but so much damage has been done and for so long that there's no way there won't be a massive die-off in the coming decades.

I finally watched True Detective Season 1 and enjoyed just about everything about it. The two main characters are very well written and acted, the side characters were realistic and the storyline had a very Seven-like feel, all of which made it very compelling.

I had read that Season 2 is generally considered worse and not as many people enjoyed it, and 3 episodes in and I don't really care enough to finish all 8 episodes. There are twice as many main characters to follow and I find them all pretty standard and not particularly interesting. The writing seems less focused and the setting does not pull me in like the Louisiana bayou did.

My questions for anyone who has watched all 3 seasons:

    1. Is Season 2 worth finishing? Does the storyline get more interesting in the second half of the episodes?

    2. How is Season 3 comparatively?

It doesn't bother me a bit. And why should it? Currently white folks are in the majority in the US (and on reddit) so there are by default plenty of places for white folks to espouse their feelings and not be drowned out by others. Why shouldn't black folks have a large sub on reddit to have their voices heard without all the anonymous assholes that just have to chime in with their 2 cents where it isn't wanted?

I got a couple of chuckles from it, but the characters aren't particularly interesting and the animation and writing are pretty generic. We'll see if some good character arcs develop or if the writing improves but as a long-time Star Trek fan who has been continuously disappointed in the franchise since the mid-2000's, I'm not holding out a ton of hope for this one.

I recently watched the 2-part Half in the Bag videos about their favorite TNG episodes and enjoyed them, but it made me realize how much I miss Gene Roddenberry and the intelligence, depth and heart he put into his shows.

As it stands, this is not a very engaging article and reads more like a low-quality rant.

Finding a person you love and want to be with all/most of the time is a good thing and can lead to amazing fulfillment. It can also lead to brutal heartbreak (depending on circumstances) but you are a human being so that's going to happen at times regardless.

As far as we all know, this is your only life. You're only young once, you're only you once, and if you found a person you like enough to put all your other/previous partners on the back-burner you should embrace it (and them) and enjoy the moments you have together. We never really know how long we have for anything, so live life while you can.

    Simple, do-it-yourself solution: Ad-blocking software.

If such software doesn't work/doesn't exist for your phone, stop using your phone to look at those sites and only do it on your laptop/desktop. Firefox + uBlock Origin as a basic start will make it so Google, Facebook and many others can't show you any ads at all and makes for so, SO very much better of an experience overall.

I am an avid listener of Harris's podcasts, and usually either agree with his stances or at least appreciate how they have a logical basis that explains why he believes what he does but I always bristle a bit when he talks at length about race (as he did in a similar podcast from 2016).

Though he is a champion of performing thought experiments, he seems to ignore or have a serious problem discussing the myriad of ways black people have been beaten down since slavery was made illegal. He can't/won't empathize with the day-to-day BS that comes with being black in America and instead focuses on statistics about how many black people are killed by police every year vs. white or gives a speech which basically breaks down to "If you didn't resist arrest you wouldn't be having any of the problems you're having."

It's worth the 2-hour listen and there is much more to be said here, but as much as like and respect the man I really wish he would utilize a bit more empathy and emotion when considering what it is like to be someone very different than himself.
