I had felt like it was becoming less interesting even before he left, but after he left it seemed to mostly turn into some kind of general-interest podcast and I didn’t feel like I was learning anything. He was pretty crucial to the show, in retrospect.
I remember there was drama around him leaving Reply All. I wonder if anyone has opinions about that.

If anything, the time they spend trying to increase a university’s funding is time they didn’t spend advocating for oil companies. Plus, assuming that university is doing climate science, maybe it’s funding that eventually goes against oil companies.

- What do data engineers do for your company?
- Any idea of the pay?
I have a lot of other questions but I don't want to be annoying...
E: Thank you for all the answers; this seems like a very promising field for people with the right experience. I’m a math PhD, but I don’t have data science/management work experience. It sounds very interesting though.

Don’t people just like to know what’s happening in the world? Yes, you’ve got to filter out the clickbait but that’s a problem with all media.
Taking it a bit further, can’t you apply a similar argument to dismiss any media? X is totally unnecessary to my life, plus it has the following downsides…
E: One more pattern I’ve seen is that when people say X sucks, it’s almost always the case that X is meant for some other demographic.

Basically all the media I watch is on my phone/laptop (don’t have tv outside of YouTube/Netflix/piracy), and the occasional movie in the theater. Tildes is starting to dominate my social media experience since the death of Apollo, so Reddit ads have never really been a thing for me outside spam posts…
Other than billboards on the highway, I’m having trouble thinking of a source of advertising that actually makes it to my attention other than movie previews. I use the best ad blocking I can find on all my devices, skip the ads in podcasts and subscribe to ad-free Spotify. I don’t use Meta sites, TikTok or Twitter. I bet lots of people are like this, digging a mile-wide moat around their attention.
Ah yes, I guess I see some ads in search results, but my eyes just always skip like the first three results in any search these days…

- bots that reply to you, correcting some minor spelling/grammar mistake
- downvotes because people disagree with something you’re trying to explain, with no reply
- pun threads
- formulaic jokes for the first eight top-level comments
- comments copied from the last time something was posted
- bans for commenting on the wrong sub
- creamy corn (are you actually still reading this?!)
- subs with niche names and rules which are really just general tiktok repost subs
- the makers of this game can go straight to hell (also I play this game four hours a day)
- miracle cancer cures that only worked in a Petri dish
- that said, I still actually like Reddit. We’ll see how long it lasts!

I called t-mobile and had them disable it on my phone account. I’ve got text and email for checking messages — voicemail is so slow and annoying! Besides, there’s a missed call notification anyway too.
Another antiquated thing: I separate my whites and bleach them. I’ve heard nobody does that anymore.

I thought it was a BBS, but that’s too old. These days they’re called boards, message boards or forums.
About Reddit: I still use it, especially for niche knowledge, but definitely less, and with less interest these days. Tildes is turning out to be more of that “new smaller subreddit” everyone wistfully looks back on, and I hope it can keep that vibe as long as possible.

This was one of the best videos I’ve seen in a long time. Proof is a major part of my work, and zero-knowledge proof is something I hadn’t even considered. In math, you usually like
profsproofs more if they deepen your understanding of the topic. Here, they hope to not even hint at the topic!
