The Apollo app for Reddit closes this evening. End of an era.

Mixed feelings about it all.

I think Reddit suffers from the same ‘1 discussion keeps you coming back for ten years in hope of a repeat’ that most if not all social media struggles with. It also has excellent dogs in hilarious situations and because of the amount of users, a constant refresh of what should be a tired genre but which just dosnt seem to die.

I have enough respect for r/pics for the John Oliver death march, that I cant go back.

I said elsewhere a week or two ago, I stumbled across it again a week or two ago and never realised how negative and toxic it can really be. There are some wonderful communities over there, but it just no longer offsets against the wider negativity.

It is funny to see my phone usage drop by an hour each day since the API-geddon started.

Still. Such a shame of a way to go.

I'm seriously gonna miss having a good place to discuss some things, though. I don't know anyone in real life who reads manga, let alone anything like Land of the Lustrous or Dungeon Meshi. Those subreddits were the best place I could go to talk about those mangas with other English-speaking fans, and now I'm gonna have to use reddit (nah) or enjoy my favorite series in silence.

Yeah, it's a loss for so many reasons. The Indexability of the conversations on other platforms is really painful for those of us who lurk more. Discord just doesn't have the same effort and the Fediverse feels tough to work with.

Jumping on the bandwagon here to say yeah, after the blackout, I also realised how much of a waste of time /r/all is. I only ever used it to waste time but I guess I never realised how bad it actually is? I still use it - mostly out of habit I suppose - but overall I'm spending way less time on Reddit, especially when I'm caught up on the subreddits I actually like and subscribe to.

There was a really small sub I used to use to socialise with folks from my country that got overshadowed by another a few years back. I don't think my Reddit experience ever really recovered after that if I'm honest.

Then the Facebookification of various subs happened. "lol, I did a thing" photos rather than text-based discussions really killed the vibe for me.

It's weird it feels less like a passing of a torch than the Digg migration or when Fark was winding down. It's like Reddit has sucked up so much of the small special interest groups on the open channels that there's a void looking beyond that. And yes, I know I'm on Tildes, but this is new yet, and missing many of the smaller, specialized communities that Reddit has.

I agree. While I value good discussions (after all, that's why I am here), I've also realized that being on top of all the discussions for every interest of mine is really extenuating. I noted that it is hard to have original personal thoughts if you constantly ingest other people's views and opinions. It is hard to focus on a hobby or a project if joining that niche subreddit bombards me with new interesting ideas, software frameworks, and things to try.

Now, things are quieter. Are they more boring? Yes. But I feel I have more "space" for my ideas and thoughts, and this makes it worth it.

Honestly, since joining Tildes it's occurred to me how negative a lot of the internet is, not just Reddit. There's obvious examples like Twitter and Facebook, but the comment section on sites like notalwaysright can be just full of negativity and automatic bad assumptions. Even the most innocuous stories and posts can end up having essentially a flame war in the comment section vilifying someone. I just see people automatically assuming the worst of others all over, and... well, it's sad.

What's bad is that I can see it was starting to affect me. Right before this whole mess started, I responded to someone on reddit for accusing a poster of lying by pointing out how the post could still be true. After replying to that commenter, I scrolled through the replies and saw they had replied in other threads to harass the original poster. It just made me mad because I've seen so many posters who went to reddit seeking advice edit their posts to say they were leaving because of all the harassment for proof or accusations they were making it all up based on nitpicking super-tiny details.

As soon as I got a reply in my inbox countering my point, I typed "Serious question: why does this matter to you?" Laid out that I'd seen them in other parts, and told them to go outside because this didn't impact them whatosever. Won't lie, I was definitely a bit more aggressive since my ire at toxicity in general bled into my typing. Well, it turned out that the person who replied wasn't the same commenter. I'd been so worked up I hadn't even bothered checking out their name.

It just gave me a second of shock. There's some sort of irony that I was angry about the toxicity and hostility on reddit, and then started leaning into that very hostility with my reply. I just stopped responding and got off the post. It was a wakeup call for sure, and a bit chilling to realize how easy it is to slide into that negative mindset without noticing.

Up until around the time Ellen Pao came in and made that first round of major changes, Reddit was the fastest place to get breaking news on the internet, easily on up there with Twitter. Any time there was truly significant news, like an ongoing active shooter situation or a natural disaster hitting somewhere, there'd be at least one live megathread on the front page where people were compiling information as it came in. Most of the time it'd hit the front page before the 24 hour news networks were even talking about it.

Then the changes hit and the algorithm changed its weighting. Those threads wouldn't bubble up to the top until hours after the fact, if they did at all. So it's not surprising that even Tildes is faster now -- reddit is dog slow.

Same. I had been on Reddit for ten years. It got worse and worse with the decisions of the executive team wanting to be the next Facebook. Their actions to support TheDonald as part of a false balance really confirmed that. Reminds me how conservatives whined about how biased all social media was against them and when the facts were checked, it turned out they were receiving special treatment against being sanctioned unlike everyone else.

The wannabe moneyed class thinks again and again that they have to cater to conservatives. I fear their actions are paying dividends. Being not of the “Good People” (conservative, white, cisgender, heterosexual, white) because I’m leftist, white, trans and pansexual, it’s alienating but not unfamiliar in the slightest. It’s disappointingly predictably actually. If only that made it less galling.

I have been a reddit user for over a decade. I have started to reduce my screen time recently (right around the time the protest started) - Apollo was responsible for over half of my phone use. It feels weird for me, but since I've made it harder to use that app (https://one-sec.app/ is absolutely amazing btw) I haven't even reached my set limit of 30 minutes.

Apollo was such a fantastic app, it just was the most polished reddit client. Everything worked intuitively, there was basically nothing that I missed.

For me, cutting out reddit has had amazing benefits. Instead of having pointless discussions, I've picked up chess and I started doing sports again.

I was a very active user, probably spending 10-20h a week on reddit for 10 years. It feels weird to benefit from it personally, but still feel bad about the decision. But I guess this is the way it will be now. I wonder how my phone usage will change even more now.

the one-sec app is great. I downloaded it and it immediately helped me reduce my time with tik tok as well as Apollo. I also like that the developer offered the "pro version" for free to people that can't afford it.

I bought a lifetime license to the pro version for 30 Euros

I don't even know where I should begin with this app, because I genuinely believe that it's been a large contributor to my positive changes. So initially I downloaded it because it lets you do some small "challenge" to open the app. You can choose which challenge you want, for me it's taking a deep breath or showing an alternative hobby I could do instead, following a circle on the screen or rotating my phone 3 times.

Once you've done the challenge you can set your intention for opening the app - Are you procrastinating, bored, on the toilet, etc...

I also made it ask me to write a few words in a journal first every time I open it in the morning or evening. It makes you reflect: what do you like about your routine, what don't you like. What are you grateful for, etc.

Now here's the thing. I put in "I would like to study more chess" or "I would like to do sports" in there like 5 times in a row, and it just reprogrammed my brain to just finally move and I felt like: You want this: Do it.

So yeah, nowadays, I don't even know what I should add to my "what don't you like about your daily routine" because I feel very happy with what I have achieved so far.

Anyone struggling with smartphone addiction should try this app. It's iOS only sadly though. -it's also available on android (and actually also as a desktop browser extension)

          It's iOS only sadly though.

Based on the information on the website it's not, there's an Android version on Google Play. Perhaps you've been using that app before an Android port was released and you just linked to the website without visiting it right now. :)

Anyway, I'm struggling with those things as well. I uninstalled Facebook and Messenger from my smartphone in 2018. I almost stopped using Facebook the same year. I gradually forgot it exists and I don't have any meaningful relationships there, if I care about somebody I can find them elsewhere. I still keep that account, though, because on rare occasions it might come useful. That's what I keep telling myself. I thought about deactivating or even deleting my FB account multiple times. But I no longer have a dopamine addiction problem with Facebook, so it's not as important.

I replaced Facebook with Reddit. :( I was also a user of Apollo (Ultra tier at the moment) and I compulsively opened the app through the day to scroll for a bit. My dog lies on the grass for a bit? It's Apollo time! I'm on the toilet? Apollo time! Eating lunch by myself? Apollo time! Just winding down after work? You guessed it... I'm kinda happy that Reddit is making those changes because I will stop visiting it from my phone. I moved to Tildes, so I stopped visiting Reddit even on my desktop PC.

Now... I observed that I switched my compulsion to yet another site. Tildes this time. It may not be as active as Reddit, people here may keep saying it's not a Reddit alternative, but that doesn't make it a reality. Personally, I DO think of it as of Reddit alternative (just my impression so far, sorry). And an alternative addiction for myself.

I will probably give this app a try, thank you for the recommendation.

interesting you found it easier to handle FB by deleting it entirely. At first I made a long password and logged out every time so it was actually taking ages to log in. Then my FB use dropped right off and eventually deleted it entirely after I got all the photos off in a zip file. And I blame the algorithm showing me loud or angry posts from my network instead of just my actual feed.

Something else was the driving factor of that change. I became obsessed with privacy :P and started cutting out all spies (i.e., the culprits of surveillance economy). I didn't want its apps on my phone, I didn't want it to know what I'm doing in life, I stopped liking (via the button) content and stopped commenting. Removed my personal information, deleted photos, etc. I stopped updating my profile picture. I just gradually stopped interacting with what I saw as an evil corporation who wants my personal data. And then I stopped feeling the urge to visit.

I think I took the privacy stuff a little too far ;) I even convinced (successfully!) a group of friends to move our group chat from Messenger to WhatsApp Signal Matrix Telegram. I know the last one is not encrypted, but without diving into details that's what we settled upon eventually. Sometimes I'm thinking of going back to Signal, at the time when we tried, we were jumping from app to app and there was always something important not working or missing.

Well there’s a few reasons why I don’t mind the subscription cost:

what possible reason is there for an app like this to have a subscription?

It's an app that runs on the phone, it doesn't have overhead server costs, or services, it's literally a standalone app.

Yea, but the app gets constant updates. And those require time, which I feel should be fairly compensated. Especially as a mobile developer myself.

And it's relatively basic app, right? It's basically just a timer/landing page overlay that overlays over selected apps, that hardly sounds like a difficult app to create or maintain that justifies a subscription cost.

It just has a bunch of options of what you'd like the landing page to say/do, that's it.

It’s exactly what I was looking for in an app. I could clone it, but I would basically have 30 minutes to build it, otherwise it would have been cheaper for me to work on my side project and just buy that app.

I'm just the type of person that vehemently is against subscription models when they don't need to be, it really feels like the developer is taking advantage of people's addiction to social media, and the subscription fee and/or the lifetime license being $30 seems exorbitant based on the actual complexity of this app.

So other than the fact that I don’t agree 30 bucks is a high price to pay for an app that someone invested hundreds of hours building, the app can be used for free with only one app being blocked, and if anyone seriously has issues with their phone usage, the developer offers a free pro license for just giving him a shoutout on social media. This was the factor that made me decide on paying for a lifetime subscription.- I can afford it and I like to support the developer.

Other than that it’s one Euro a month. And I totally get that people don’t like subscriptions, but you can’t have permanent updates and a one time payment without infinite growth or the developer making a loss on the app.

For me this app has definitely been worth the price already. But maybe it’s not for you!

Like, I would have paid 100 euros a month ago if someone could’ve gotten me to stop using Reddit and start doing sports. One Euro a month or 30 euros for life is definitely not a big investment in my eyes

I feel you're making a mountain out of a molehill here. You yourself recognize that the tactics here are common for any other modern mobile app, so I see it as no more or less evil than any other mobile app. It really seems like the grind for you comes down to price that makes it standout for you. But $20/year or $3/month is too much for some (many) people, and is a non factor for others. I spent $20 on fast food lunch today, I wouldn't even think about paying the same for a year of access to something that can potentially break bad habits.

Or you know, $2.99 a month. Another well established dark pattern that has existed before any digital service. I just don't understand taking out what seems to be a larger rant on something that ultimately is trying to break other dark patterns of the modern web.

how can I trust an app that's supposed to help me get unaddicted to social media if the developer's employing all these strategies to get me hooked and reliant on their app for prices that I personally can't justify?

You try it out for one app on the free version, see if it helps, and uninstall if it doesn't. Or you find/make an alternative. This isn't some novel feature they cornered the market on, and I'm sure you can find a truly free alternative.

But in some cases you get what you pay for. In thebdays of constantly updating mobile OS, some promise of support can be worth the subscription. I'm not gonna pretend anyone is out there looking out for my best interest, so it's simply a transaction. Not some charity to make the world better.

But honestly I'm just really against this kind of thing, and I'm really surprised people are ok with it,

You're probably more emotionally invested in this than the developers themselves. That's the problem. I'm not under some illusion of an altruistic developer looking out for my best interests. They do it because it works, and it works because mobile apps have raced to the bottom, mostly due to consumer expectations. If apps didn't have to worry about making everything free to download, we wouldn't have to hide costs behind some introductory usage. Blame the market.

For me, It's a cold hard transaction of a tool, and if the tool helps me I aa a consumer am satisfied. The dev is a machine for the sake of my metaphor; why be emotionally angry at a machine? It's not an emotional investment, and barely a financial one. If it goes to shit, I uninstall. I'm not a part of some guild or community dedicating themselves to a common interest. It's a personal app for a personal benefit.

If I had to worry about the ethics of every product I consume, Id never do anything, and I'd only stunt my ambitions. So I'm not going to pretend to be a perfectly ethical consumer. They provide a good service that is within my budget, I provide my money and use them for my personal gain.

especially alongside discussions of the ever-evolving enshittification of the tech space, arbitrary subscription models being one of those factors.

I'm not mad about enshittification. Even the best websites are managed by humans whose life situations may change one day, or they simply die. Leadership changes and they may or may not be as charitable. I don't trust any one site on that basis.

I care more about a lack of alternatives for backups when I inevitably need to jump. I don't want to feel "stuck" on any one site for various things.

To be clear and succinct: I have a problem paying that much money for something that isn't a service nor a complex or specialized app that justifies an unreasonable price.

This is why I think your problem is price. I'm not saying you have a problem with all paid apps, but it also doesn't sound like your issues aee unique to this specific app.

Your own wors constantly emphasize the price tag. Is it unreasonable that I receive a vibe that you think the price is unreasonable?

I Don't know how else to phrase my response.
Value is relative. People will pay $100 for an unopened booster pack of a trading card game. I'm not going to judge how others choose to use their money, and if they don't care about the ethics I'm not going to care for them.

Things I will not miss from Reddit:

    • bots that reply to you, correcting some minor spelling/grammar mistake
    • downvotes because people disagree with something you’re trying to explain, with no reply
    • pun threads
    • formulaic jokes for the first eight top-level comments
    • comments copied from the last time something was posted
    • bans for commenting on the wrong sub
    • creamy corn (are you actually still reading this?!)
    • subs with niche names and rules which are really just general tiktok repost subs
    • the makers of this game can go straight to hell (also I play this game four hours a day)
    • miracle cancer cures that only worked in a Petri dish
    • that said, I still actually like Reddit. We’ll see how long it lasts!

You're making me realize how shallow reddit actually is and how seriously I took it for some part of my life. I haven't visited in about a month now, except if a google search directs me there, and I'm realizing that I have a TON more free time that I didn't know about, because I apparently used to just aimlessly scroll for hours and sometimes argue with people over basically nothing.

I do still think there's value in some niche communities there (for example, the formula 1 subreddit really was the best place to talk about F1 on the internet), but man... I do not miss the bots, the disagreement downvotes, formulaic jokes, etc.

I have great respect for Apollo but as an Android user I used RIF. I can tell you honestly that I was depressed when I heard it was shutting down. I deleted my Reddit account before the black out after I got an invite here and hearing about this place from the RIF dev @talklittle. Since then I've only returned to Reddit to send a few invites under a throwaway account. Every time I return I'm reminded how toxic it's become. Without the filtered subs of my old account it's basically just a cesspool and a circlejerk of the same comments over and over. RIF you will be missed! Reddit, not so much.

I've used reddit is fun daily for a decade. It sucks to admit, but I'm addicted to reddit. RIF closing is the kick the pants I need to move on and find other sources of entertainment and information.

But what really sucks is that for almost all hobby/niche questions I have, Google is almost useless unless I add "reddit" to the search query. Every top result is just a compilation of keywords to get traffic, while the discussion on reddit goes into great detail and back-and-forth on what I need. The niche and hobby subreddits are the greatest loss, I think.

    • Secret Santa
    • Alien Blue (and the conciliatory 4 years of free Reddit Gold they gave me post-buyout for switching over to the official app, which I never touched again after I found Apollo)
    • The stupid "new" reddit redesign
    • Custom snoos? Why?
    • Wasn't there an ill-conceived cryptocurrency in development at one time?
    • The whole Ellen Pao / violentacrez / fatpeoplehate / jailbait / cEnSoRsHiP / Voat thing which are all kind of swirl together in one big foul-smelling memory soup in my brain

I'm probably forgetting some other milestones in the history of reddit. There were good times and bad times. I briefly created and moderated a sub that never took off and quickly fizzled out, but it was fun. I had a lot of good discussions and wasted an incalculable amount of time too. At some point when it became clear what Voat was becoming, I bailed and joined Tildes (this was right around the time it launched). But I've been on reddit, too, using Apollo and old.reddit this whole time. Couldn't bring myself to jump ship.

The API changes and their handling of third-party apps and devs was the last straw. Of course I don't need to explain it to you folks but there's something cathartic about putting it into words. This comment is my elegy, it's bittersweet. I'm going to miss reddit but I'm washing my hands of it once and for all.

I'm trying to archive my content on there. I want to grab everything before overwriting it with a protest message, first, then delete the account. Still trying to determine the best way to do that. Does anyone know of a way to automate that process for all comments, even those beyond the 1,000 most recent threshold?

You should grab yourself a GDPR/CCPA dump - it takes Reddit a while to process them, because I believe they're doing it manually, but then you get everything, not just your most recent 1000 comments. IIRC, one of the mass-delete tools can also take the CSV file from the GDPR dump and use it to delete truly everything.

That said, I also vaguely recall some people claiming reddit was "testing" changes on random users on the mobile site. Specifically, some people claimed the site was literally unusable for them. No clue how true that is though.

A few weeks ago I would google things on my phone and tap on a reddit link - the mobile site would load but a pop up would block my view saying I needed to use the app to view the thread. I couldn't close or get rid of the popup, so I couldn't read the comments/post.

Wasn't even NSFW stuff, it was things like tech troubleshooting and cooking tips. Guess I was one of the chosen test subjects.

It sucked, but I basically just backed out of the page and scrolled to different links.

Ah yes, I know what you mean now. I'm usually logged in, but I have the habit of using a private tab to search stuff to avoid cluttering my search history so I've encountered it now and then. That pop up mainly shows up for smaller subreddits, not just NSFW, and mentions the fact that it's a small subreddit as part of the message. The thinking is probably that people would riot if they couldn't view major subreddits even logged out.

It's so endlessly annoying. I forgot how horrid it is logged out. Though the complaints I saw gave me the impression there were problems for even users who were logged in? Either way, definitely a bad sign.

I just deleted Apollo. Sad day, but I’ve basically stopped using Reddit since the blackout. I’ve accidentally opened it a few times, mindlessly started scrolling, and then promptly shut it. /r/All has been looking even worse lately. It’ll be better in the long run for me to divorce Reddit, and replace it with actually reading long form news articles. I’ve got Apple News which has tons of great content. Time to move on.

I‘ve been thinking about your comment since I‘ve seen it yesterday, thinking I would just do that later and I‘ll just keep using apollo until it doesn‘t work anymore. But I just don‘t see a point anymore. As a very active redditor commenting and helping people daily, answering questions, reporting rule-breaking content etc. for 10 years, I just have this bad feeling whenever I try to respond on reddit. /u/spez managed to take all Goodwill away. I don‘t want to contribute meaningfully to reddit anymore. These changes have taken this community from me. A lot of people from the sub I frequent have moved to Lemmy - enough that some threads get hundreds of comments.

On tildes, it‘s gotten much more lively recently, realistically - how many users do you need to feel like a community is worth contributing to? I can barely catch up with all the posts here.

I‘ll put my effort into the communities elsewhere from now on. Reddit is now just for my occasional curiosity and lurking. It‘s not going to be used on my phone.

No need to re-iterate my feelings about reddit. Links below if you want to catch up.

I am concerned that reddit is silently restoring deleted posts, comments and edits. I going to wait to check if what I've removed/edited has been restored before deleting my main account. So far, some random sampling hasn't shown any red flags. I expect they are queuing up all restores though, but at some point they will either have remove the ability altogether or allow deleting and editing as usual, probably backed with secretive checks - like how they handle spam. But I'm very patient as stubborn as a mule.

I don't contribute much to tildes, but I really should rectify that because it does feel similar to the early reddit days. I think the rules here have been well considered - no downvoting in my opinion is strictly necessary. If you disagree with something all you can do is ignore it or reply with your own opinions. I'm not active enough here to notice much drama but I'm not dealing with it day-to-day so what do I know? I do worry it's a matter of scale - Eternal September. I've only had 1 comment (calling me a gatekeeper) that I thought was unnecessary, but that's so little friction it's laughable.

Thanks for that link, it's actually re-assuring and does explain issues that many people have complained about.

Another issue, which I think is what freaked a lot of people out initially, is your profile doesn't show comments/posts in subs marked private. Many subs remained private, so people waited for 2-3 days to deleted everything. When a sub eventually re-opens those posts and comments soon reappear on their profile. A recently re-opened example is listentothis.

It's probably why I haven't really noticed any red flags personally. I kept a list of private subs, marking them off as they re-open.

I deleted everything for all but 2 accounts and used google / duckduckgo to search the exact account names. Every link I have found has had nothing restored. It's not a perfect approach but it very much backs up what Deimos says.

I ran shreddit and power delete suite to get those in the 1,000 that Deimos and also current Reddit developers/admins (1, 2, 3) mentioned. But there's more, and with the information they shared I found the remaining posts and comments this way:

          1. Run a targeted google search.

            1. First with your user name, search just the reddit site, like this to avoid your overwrite text. That finds things like this.

            2. Then look at your profile page in old reddit. On the right, under your Comment Karma, click the "show karma breakdown by subreddit" link. Do another google search for your name, in each of the subs where you have karma - like this, you'll find just a few more, like this. Make a note of the subs that are still private (like r/programming) because you'll need to get those when they reopen.

          2. Now do a general search and per-sub search for posts and comments using new reddit. You get way more results with new reddit than old, and it will surface things (especially comments) that didn't show up with google. For example.

            1. Do each of the Post sorts (Relevance, Hot, Top, etc.).

            2. Do each of the Comments sorts (Relevance, Top, New) - each sort surfaces different comments, for example.

            3. Like the google search, skip the subs that are Private and return to them when they reopen.

However, I still decided to protest in support of everyone who was using third party apps, so I left. I joined Tildes.

I've since gone back. Created a new user name this past weekend, and subscribed to /r/watches, /r/integra, my local town's sub, a few other small hobbyist subs. And it's no different for me than it was two months ago or two years ago or 15 years ago. Small subs is where reddit shines and while Ive enjoyed my time on Tildes, I'm not gonna leave my small subs for as long as they're active.

I've already started spending more and more time on Tildes and two other alternatives in recent weeks so between the three I feel like my reddit itch is being scratched. However it's dispiriting to know the mass exodus of users reddit deserves to experience tomorrow will be hampered by the fact that no single place exists that can do it all the way that reddit could for Digg's userbase in 2010.

All in all this leaves such a sour taste in my mouth because this means that every major social media platform has now successfully enshittificated. With twitter going earlier this year that means that there truly is no large website left for the old people of the internet to feel welcome meaning that we will probably see most power users move either here or lemmy.

I just can't contribute more money to Reddit like that.

I still want to check in on a few small communities I'm a part of. So I'll have to deal with the mobile site every now and again. But it will be significantly less than my usage a month ago. I pretty much kept to my subs on Reddit, so it didn't feel too toxic to me. But like all of you, I don't support Reddits actions.

The fact that I have an account on tildes tells me this isn't the first time I've wanted to ditch Reddit. I guess I feel a bit relieved.

I had my "final straw" with Facebook years ago, more recently with Twitter, but I stuck with Reddit, even though the platform felt more and more toxic. It was a slow boil, reminiscing about the "good old days" has me realizing how much it changed. Apollo was a bit of a buffer and it made me forget that Reddit is a company that doesn't care about its users.

I'm keeping the app installed to see if I try to open it... muscle memory, you know. Maybe it will remind me why I'm leaving the site.
