And someone else on Lemmy have this advice: "After I got blocked from watching further videos, I disabled uBlock on Firefox, clicked any video and then enabled uBlock again. For some reason neither the blocking nor the pop-ups came back after reloading or since." This probably updated the filter list.

I also just read that people have been able to use FF with their adblocker still working by either watching YT in a private window or opening up the video in a new tab.

The advice I read on Lemmy/kbin was to:

    1. Click the uBlock Origin icon on Firefox's menu bar

    2. You'll see a three-gear icon at the bottom right. Click this to open the dashboard.

    3. Click the "Purge all caches" button at the top.

    4. Click the "Update now" button at the top.

I know that people also use Invidious (similar to Piped). I use Newpipe mostly (it's an app I downloaded from F-droid).

I have been using Mozilla VPN for a few months without complaints. I'm using them really to support the company (I use Firefox a lot) while adding a little security. Hulu detected the VPN btw, but I have used it without issue when I stream British video from BBC iPlayer and UKTV apps (so far that is). I was $56-ish for the year with a discount code.

Kronos timekeeping and payroll applications, down for hacking related reasons? I think they were down for users for a solid month.

I'm in the US. I see time and again divide and conquer tactics being used with various wedge issues - in this case transgender related issues. At least in the US, it's a way to get people who would normally vote for Democrats to vote for Republicans but just on "this one very important issue." There's a reason "Think of the children!" is a cliche and a meme - they've used gay panic before but everyone knows someone who is LGB or has someone in their family, so it's less of a boogeyman. They've used abortion quite successfully before but now that Roe v Wade has been overturned, trans issues has become the new wedge issue. They tried with BLM but that didn't work as well as this.

But to your point, yes, the people who want to exclude transwomen from the event could be entirely sincere, unmanipulated, and coming to this with zero outside influence. But I'm sure conservative media will publicize this and make hay of it all over social media. It's just the typical game plan.

I find it maddening when the main protagonist is in the midst of a fight or a calamity, in real peril/in danger of losing and... time has suddenly passed, the peril or danger presumably has ended, and the character is in a different location and on to the next adventure. I'm always like WTF just happened? How did he win/get away/survive? What happened to the baddies? And it is almost always handwaved away or.not even addressed. I always assume that they don't know how to end the scene and think that audiences won't care (it's borderline contemptuous).

My husband and I call this "Sahara-ing" in (dubious) honor of the Matthew McConaughey movie Sahara. They Sahara'd a heck of a lot in Sahara.

Yes, I read the article when it was initially published. I've read other articles about current initiatives from cities around the US and different conversions that are in process since reading the NYT article. I am not an expert, armchair or.otherwise - I am only seeing what has veen reported or studied by other people, and there seems to be a movement towards these conversions, even if on a modest scale.

The Deloitte study I linked to predicted that office-to-residential conversions would be financially viable after 5vyears. I think 15% of all office buildings is a significant amount.

I'm a little confused by the article you posted and your follow up comment. The article doesn't seem to support your comment - it sounds like office to residential conversions have been done before and may be possible for a number of existing office buildings. What does the article have to do with laypeople believing that they are real estate experts?

I did a little searching and according to some experts about 10-25% off office buildings are good candidates for conversion to residential. This report "predicts that office-to-residential conversions could become profitable within the next five years.".

Some cities have already started working on conversion initiatives. Here's one in NYC that just started.

This is really surprising to read. I remember that Japan had a huge housing bubble that popped in around 1990 or 1991, and they had a decade of economic stagnation IIRC. They even created the 100 year mortgage, just to make it possible to stretch out the debt across generations. I'm glad to hear they figured it out because it sounded worse than the US housing bubble.

My 10 year old son asked me the other day what feminism was. He had never heard of the word and when I tried to define it on the fly he looked a little puzzled. It surprised me that he hadn't been introduced to the concept since he goes to a pretty liberal public school. I think the school has focused more on racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic diversity. Also, i have to admit that I feel a little guilty that he's practically a tween and he doesn't have a clue what feminism is (im feeling like this is a big mom fail).

Usually when I want to introduce a topic that I think is important with my kids, I find an appropriate book as a jumping off point. But I'm really stuck on this one. Everything is either way too young (picture books) or written with girls as the target audience. And the books don't seem to define feminism exactly, just give vague descriptions, slogans, and historical examples. I'm looking for something along the lines of Stamped: Racism, Antiracism, and You, which is a book his entire 4th Grade class read and discussed last year. ETA: He reads at a high level - for example, he breezed through The Hobbit. So a book at a High School level might also work.

Thank you in advance for your help!
