I feel like this is kinda newsworthy because I've never seen a major dating app like this down for so long. I wonder if it's a security issue or something.
Definitely not a major app, I think this was only really used in big cities like LA. I never had much success on it, though I did like that it didn't have a lot of the same predatory monetization...

I dated someone 7.5 years ago who I met through it and went on several dates with matches. They changed the format sometime after that and I never used it again.

Ok Cupid earlier this year had an outage that lasted through a weekend. They didn’t release any statements about it, but the OK Cupid subreddit noticed.

3 days is crazy… I can’t imagine what it’s like working there right now… super curious to find out what happened. What could even cause 3 days of outage.

My guess is a total failure from developers or operations teams. Someone executes a bad data/schema migration on production Data is lost Backups haven't been tested in years and don't work right...

They could have been hit by ransomware and going through figuring out legal options. That happened to Garmin relatively recently and they were down globally for days or a week IIRC.

Or they got hacked and initially didn't know what was going on, then needing time to assess.
Or they didn't pay their bills, Musk style.
In the first example they're not going to provide info beyond "network problem" because techno jargon. Second example they wouldn't say much until it got sorted and they find out the extent of the damage.
All of this is kind of wild speculation and I'm not an IT professional so take this all with a giant grain of salt.

Dish Network had extensive outages for over a month earlier this year. Not sporadic, literally over a month straight of various services being completely down. I believe their satellite TV service was still functioning, but almost every other service they operated was down. They got hit with ransomware. It seems their internal customer service tools, billing, customer login portals etc. were all down. Their main website, dish.com was down and they put up a temporary one eventually, but you still couldn't even sign up for service online that whole time.
Dish was also very quiet about it for days without acknowledging what the issue was. Which to me told me they probably got ransomwared (because that makes it difficult to get things back up right away if your backups aren't right and if it wasn't caught early and their internal network was designed poorly means widespread encryption). Prolonged outages like that with no communication generally suggests something pretty embarrassing or otherwise just not good for their public image happened.
Although the specific ransomware gang responsible for the incident remains unnamed by the company, BleepingComputer was told by credible sources that the notorious Black Basta ransomware operation orchestrated the assault, initially breaching Boost Mobile before infiltrating the Dish corporate network.
According to multiple sources familiar with the matter, the attack occurred in the early hours of February 23. The assailants reportedly gained access to Dish Network's Windows domain controllers, subsequently encrypting VMware ESXi servers and backups, causing a massive outage that affected its websites and apps.
I've never heard of this app, is it particularly localized or something or have I just been that out of the loop? (Being queer and non-monogamous tends to influence my dating app choices anyway)

I don't think it was a huge app but I think it was one of the bigger ones that aren't owned by Match Group (Hinge, Tinder), and is women created iirc. . Anecdotally, as an ex Christian I know that it was more prominent in those circles, and I know of a couple of people who have gotten married through it.
Ah gotcha and if they advertised as "long term" or serious or something I can see that appealing to Christian folks ala PoF back in the day Thanks for sharing

Kronos timekeeping and payroll applications, down for hacking related reasons? I think they were down for users for a solid month.

I didn't want to unfairly generalize but I definitely noticed my options on the app being far more weighted towards the Asian demographic too .
Got it. It's always a bit fascinating what clicks with which groups of people I think.

Seems like it's cyberattack season.
HSHS is affecting my partners medication right now. :(
They fucked up a paper Rx but can't fix it via electronic because of it.
It's so frustrating
So what are we thinking, ransomware?
