I got the impression that the owner's wishy-washy statements about community standards on the platform would eventually lead to this kind of announcement.
It wasn't just about what the owner was saying, it was also about questionable decisions to not take immediate action on accounts whose submissions and comments couldn't be interpreted as anything but hate speech unless you were operating from the narrowest definition possible. I've had my fill of that approach from the reddit admins/AEO so I jumped ship before sinking any more time into it.
It's a shame because hybridizing reddit and twitter was an interesting concept that I took to quickly but it appears that squabbles is interested in courting the worst of both platforms.

Comment on 'Fuck Spez': Reddit users unite to turn r/Place mural into a protest in ~tech

Sure, as long as you ignore the other times r/place has been done. It always generates a bunch of new traffic but the vast majority of people who take part in it don't stick around afterwards. It's ephemeral. It's not going to magically make reddit's IPO more attractive.

Big brain plays, for sure.
That's not what's happening. They stopped selling reddit coins last Thursday. And existing Reddit coins are about to be useless on September 12th so redditors are burning through their supply. So it's all from existing reddit premium subscriptions or coins they received for being awarded by other users. No new money has been spent.

It's going to be flooded with "fuck spez" and 3rd party app logos and spez is going to have a temper tantrum. And once that happens I look forward to a new heap of embarrassing articles about reddit dropping by EOD Friday.

Fortunately at least one brand has their products on sale each week at my grocery store and I'm not particularly picky. I just can't justify the cost unless they're buy one get one though especially when there are other snack options out there that I enjoy just as much at a better price.

They're also nice options for people that just need a cheap way to browse the internet and check email. I set my parents up with a Beelink mini pc that cost something like $180 two years ago and it suits their needs well. It's sad to be losing Intel's products range but you're right, they did accomplish their goals and there are still more great options out there than ever.

Heck, I'd go so far as to say that kind of thing can be weird and in certain cases unhealthy because it can encourage people to make their use of certain forums/apps part of their identity. And I just don't think we should view participation in digital communities that way.
Edit: My apologies for being overly serious in a lighthearted discussion. The original question and the above reply just got me thinking about some issues I have with social media that I wanted to get out there.

I signed up for kbin and it's okay but I'm not sure if it's the right fit for me. Apart from Tildes the only reddit alternative I can see myself using long term is Squabble.io. And that's mostly because it has a lot of the meme/shitposting that's missing from tildes.
Don't get me wrong, I've always loved this community's focus on higher level discussion but sometimes I just want to browse some memes or watch a bunch of gifs. So I consider squabbles to be a compliment to tildes. Between the two sites the reddit shaped hole in my digital life is now filled.

I was hoping Bluesky would've done it already but Jacky boy seems to be taking his sweet time in invite-only Beta. (For example I've been on the waitlist for five months and have all but given up on ever getting in)
Edit: Big thank you to the person who PMed me a Bluesky invite. It's much appreciated!

That's probably for the best. I think this is the time for people who've always depended on a combination of 3rd party mobile apps and old.reddit to start getting used to browsing tildes and other alternatives because it's not a matter of if but when old.reddit gets shutdown.
I'd be genuinely shocked if old.reddit isn't shutdown by autumn. Although a full month of terrible press and user revolt may have bought it a few extra months of life if only to put some distance between PR disasters.

I've already started spending more and more time on Tildes and two other alternatives in recent weeks so between the three I feel like my reddit itch is being scratched. However it's dispiriting to know the mass exodus of users reddit deserves to experience tomorrow will be hampered by the fact that no single place exists that can do it all the way that reddit could for Digg's userbase in 2010.
